Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 533: Do you hate me?

Chapter 533: Do you hate me?

A sickening crunch echoed across the blood-stained battlefield.

Bodies were strewn about on the snow, each one destined to become an undead if their bodies were not fed to the flames on time.

But there didn’t seem to be anyone capable of dealing with the dead at the moment as most were either injured, scared or dead.

Arthur knelt at the center of it all, one of his hands missing with a portion of his face gone, revealing the bloody skull underneath.

Beside him was the unmoving body of Lucille, the Philosopher’s Stone that powered her gone, leaving her lifeless.

Even as his blood stained the ground, Arthur’s gaze remained focused ahead.

The subject of his attention revealed herself as a woman with a bewitching beauty.

Her steps were graceful yet powerful, her mere presence dominating the entire space with no chance of resistance.

She approached him, standing a few meters away before shifting her attention to the group standing behind.

They consisted of a hard-faced Douglas, a terrified Arwen, a sobbing Nadia, and finally, a stiff Elena.

At this moment, when death surrounded them, and hunger loomed over them, they served as the stars of the macabre show.

Sayda grinned. "Is it time for you to fight?... I am aware this oversized dog kept you away from the fun. Come now, let me see what you are capable of."

Of course, faced with the suppression brought about by Sayda’s presence, none of them could move and so they remained in place, staring back at the Daemon that had appeared out of nowhere, plunging their lives into uncertainty.

"Will you not do anything?... I heard you are subordinates of the Dark Lord. Come on, show me why he picked you." Sayda taunted further even as she increased the pressure, forcing them to their knees.

Sayda was just about to take a step forward when a hand suddenly reached out and grabbed the hem of her dress.

She looked down to find Arthur as the culprit.

"Oh my, even now, you still struggle. I guess I should expect nothing less from an oversized dog."

Arthur’s lips moved, but Sayda heard nothing, causing her to lean in closer.

"What did you say?"

"... Move on my signal."

Before she could figure out what he meant, Arthur erupted with unknown strength, the rare aura of destruction permeating his being for a moment.

Sayda snorted derisively as she had nothing to fear.

However, the attack didn’t hit her; instead, a beam of destruction shot toward the sky, disrupting the structure of the domain they were in for a moment.

"Now that’s just..." Sayda didn’t even get the chance to finish her statement as the portion of her domain that was struck, shattered like glass, revealing the outside world for a moment.

Elena didn’t hesitate to act, a golden glow erupting from her to cover the Constellations members kneeling with her.

Sayda’s expression shifted briefly only to go back to normal as the golden light receded to reveal Douglas still kneeling with the others long gone.

"You stayed," Sayda muttered in slight amusement.

Douglas replied. "You can always find me again, can’t you?"

"Oh wow, so you decided to stay behind to protect the others. How heroic."

Douglas bit down on his lower lip. "Are you part of them?... The Paragons, I mean."

"Indeed." Sayda nodded as she reached for Arthur’s head and with a simple movement, snapped his neck, ridding him of life.

Douglas closed his eyes as a dull thud echoed the next moment.

"So what do you plan to do now?" Sayda questioned as she took a leisurely step forward. "Will you come willingly or do you plan to fight?"

"I wish to fight." Douglas calmly replied as he opened his eyes, his irises reflecting Arthur’s unmoving body.

Releasing her pressure on him, Sayda remarked. "Then come, come and fight!"

Boom

Sayda went wide-eyed as she hadn’t seen him move yet. He was already in front of her.

’So fast!’ She thought as Douglas landed the first blow.

Sayda fell to one knee with a crater forming underneath her.

But that wasn’t all as Douglas unleashed several more attacks, increasing the motion behind each one so it hit harder than a cannonball.

A sound akin to a scream escaped Sayda’s lips as Douglas continued until he was completely exhausted.

His breathing was uneven, and he dropped to his knees, hardly reacting even as his body tried to heal from the stress it had been put under.

Meanwhile, Sayda’s scream came to an end and for a moment, it seemed it was finished.

But then, a peal of laughter echoed across the desolate landscape as the dust cloud cleared, revealing an unharmed Sayda.

"Amazing." She remarked with a wicked grin on her lips. "You might have killed me if you had divinity. Alas, you don’t."

Chuckling, she got back on her feet before reaching out to grab Douglas’s green hair by a handful.

Then, she pulled him up, leaving him no chance to fight back as she leaned in and licked his ear. "Do you hate me?"

Douglas offered no response but his gaze remained resolute, hardly backing down even now when there was no hope.

Sayda chuckled some more before pulling back to face him squarely. "I’m going to enjoy breaking you."

An open maw manifested next to Douglas with a tongue emerging from within to wrap around him after which it swallowed him.

With that, she retracted her domain, after which she went on her way, her shoes making a crunching sound in the snow as she stepped out of the now-silent southern outpost.

Meanwhile, Elena, Arwen, and Nadia appeared within the walls of Thebes, back in the same room Elena had woken up for the first time in Eventide.

Before Elena could say anything, a heart-wrenching scream escaped Nadia’s lips as she dropped to her knees and clawed at her hair.

She thought she could escape it, she thought death wouldn’t be able to reach them.

Alas, death proved yet again that it was inevitable.
