Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 531: Three requests
Chapter 531: Three requests
"Can you still fight?" Alex inquired just as Alejandro got back on his feet
"Of course!"
Nodding in satisfaction, they charged into the tree.
Both Brenda and the nameless nun reacted at the same time with the former increasing the speed of the transfusion while the nun pulled out a card and tried to suppress Alex’s pneuma.
Alas, Alex was hardly in a state where her attack could affect him, and so she was left perplexed at her inability to suppress him like last time.
Humphrey’s counterattack came a moment later, leaving her no room for evasion as he transmuted the air around her, using it to manipulate space which he then used to crush her like a bug.
A dull thud sounded a moment later.
Realizing her companion was dead, Brenda naturally panicked as she glanced up at the man trapped within the tree. "Do something, you bastard!"
The man looked upon her with a soulless gaze before glancing at Alex and Co.
Several vines emerged to restrain them but it didn’t even get within several meters of them as they turned to ashes, causing him to let out a muffled grunt.
Alejandro took a step forward, unleashing a domain of rising heat that scorched everything it came in contact with.
Brenda cried out as she was scalded by the rising temperature.
Just as she was about to conclude her task, she found that the blood had, at some point, stopped entering Emily’s womb.
Humphrey suddenly appeared before her, reaching out to grab her wrist only for her to curse aloud. "Damn you!"
She imploded, using her blood as the catalyst for a most terrifying explosion.
A crimson light flashed but before it could do any damage, Humphrey transmuted air yet again, using it to manipulate space, effectively containing the blast to the Abyss Wheel Mystic’s body.
What remained after the light died down was pieces of dried flesh.
Alex hurried to Emily’s side as he found her in a less-than-ideal state.
"What did they do to you?" Alex inquired softly as he reached out to try and touch her only to pause as he recalled the state he was in.
Emily, on the other hand, freed from the torture Brenda inflicted upon her, was just about to fall unconscious only for Humphrey to transmute some of Alejandro’s heat into energy which he then sent into her body, allowing her to stay awake for a little while longer.
Taking a moment to regain herself, Emily asked in a hoarse tone. "Alex, is that you?"
"Don’t worry, I’ll get you out of here."
"What about Douglas?" Emily inquired, using as much strength as she could muster to look behind Alex.
"He’s waiting for us outside. So come on, we have to go."
Emily let out a dry laugh before glancing at the man above. "I told you he’d come."
The man revealed a wry smile as he replied. "You did."
Alex was just about to get Humphrey to put Emily in a confined space so they could leave when she suddenly muttered. "I can’t leave, Alex."
"Why?... Don’t worry, I have everything under control. Once we are outside, we’ll find a way to destroy the ghost baby and save you."
"No, Alex." Emily shook her head. "It’s already too late."
"What?"
Emily glanced down at her bulging stomach, using her shriveled right hand to claw at her bloodied dress before finally making a cut large enough to show Alex what was underneath.
Her stomach was almost completely transparent, allowing him to see the situation within.
It glowed with a malevolent purple but didn’t give off the same repulsive aura that most things of the Abyss gave off.
"Emily," Alex muttered as he understood that the baby was already fully formed.
Emily managed a wry smile as she said. "I held out for as long as I could. Did I do well, Alex?"
"... You did."
"That’s good to hear," Emily said, nodding her head to get rid of the dizziness assaulting her senses. "It was really painful, you know?... I wanted to give up but the man above said that I won’t die even if I kill myself."
"Emily..."
"Alex, are you really Alex?" Emily suddenly asked, her gaze regaining clarity for a brief moment.
"... Yes."
"Swear?"
"Absolutely," Alex assured her.
Emily let out a relieved sigh. "I was scared that you were someone else."
"Why would you think that?" Alex let out a dry chuckle as he undid his ethereal state, returning to normal while Humphrey created a confined space to keep away the excess life essence floating around.
Alex reached out and took off the crown of thorns on Emily’s head.
"It was giving me a headache." Emily joked with Alex laughing along.
"I can only imagine."
Looking down at her glowing transparent stomach, Emily muttered. "I have three requests, Alex."
"Tell me."
"Please save the man above me. He’s a nice guy... he just made some bad decisions."
"And what’s the second?"
"Tell Douglas I love him."
"Alright."
"Finally... kill me."
Alex’s lips quivered at that moment as he felt something crack within.
"You know that’s the only way this ends, right?" Emily muttered. "I’ve seen what it plans to do, Alex. It’s a monster, a monster with human skin. It will destroy everything."
"Douglas won’t be happy."
"I know. But it’s better I die than give birth to this creature, you know that too, right?"
Alex clenched his jaw as he got to his feet and helped Emily to her feet before sitting on the throne after which she sat on his lap and leaned on him, her blood slowly staining him.
The siblings sat like that, embracing each other for seconds that seemed to stretch on for eternity as Humphrey got to work, transmuting her life force to induce necrosis.
"I don’t want to die." Emily suddenly muttered in a fearful tone. "I’ve not been on an airship yet, I’ve not completed my engine, I’ve not fallen in love, I’ve not settled down and paid you and Douglas back for everything you’ve ever done for me... I’m a really bad sister, aren’t I, Alex?"
"No... you are the best." Alex softly replied. "You are the absolute best."
"... You’re just saying that."
Alex chuckled. "Why would I lie?"
"... Take care of Douglas for me, okay?"
"Sure."
"He can be quite forgetful when he works, so make sure to remind him to take it easy."
"No problem."
"Also, make sure he finds a good woman, okay?... He has wasted enough time on us, he should settle down as well."
Alex chuckled. "What about me?"
"... Thank you for being here Alex. I’m sorry for causing you so much trouble."
Her voice had grown faint and her heartbeat slowed down.
Alex clenched his jaw as he replied. "Anything for you, sis."
He expected a response even as he knew it would never come.
Time seemed to pause at that moment until Humphrey spoke up.
It is done.
