Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 512: Humphrey
Chapter 512: Humphrey
The sound of snow being crushed underneath his foot echoed as Humphrey slowly came to stand several meters away from Winter’s domain.
His gaze remained impassive as he studied the structure while ignoring the baby hands currently caressing his beard.
The baby yelped, drawing his attention to it, and as their eyes met, the blonde child smiled, revealing a wide array of teeth.
Humphrey smiled back before shifting his attention back to the site ahead.
To think that he’d be called up to face off against a terrifying existence like a 1st-Class Otherworldly.
He wondered what exactly was going through Adelia’s mind when she decided to take on such a daunting task.
Did she think some sort of miracle would occur should he join the fight?
Was it unbridled hubris that caused her to make such a foolish decision or perhaps a desire to make up for her lackadaisical attitude so far?
Regardless, it hardly mattered.
He was here now and as much as he hated to admit it, he had also been quite lackadaisical toward most things.
Alas, with the Abyss this close to breaking off the shackles placed on it by the Will of the World, it was merely a matter of time before Ra’as would become inhospitable for him and his people.
He let out a tired sigh as he looked back down at the baby Emperor currently trying to maneuver his way onto his shoulder.
If the Emperor were still at his peak, would the situation have gotten to such an extent?
It was a question Humphrey had pondered on one too many times and he had always arrived at the same answer.
No.
Letting out a sigh, he turned his attention to the ice castle, ignoring the innocent look sent his way by the baby Emperor.
To push back a 1st-Class Otherworldly, one required a particular set of skills with the most important being the full support of the Aether in suppressing the creature.
He had neither the diverse weapons of mass destruction that the Battle God wielded nor the absolute destruction of Fenrir, but that hardly made him any lesser than they.
They were all 7th-Advancement Mystics of their respective Mortal Wheels and so, Just as everyone had their strengths, he had his as well.
And so, he once again turned his attention to the baby Emperor he carried and putting his hand over the child, voraciously devoured the divine aura he held.
The baby Emperor blinked in confusion as to what the man was trying to do only to frown a moment later as though it had felt a slight pinch.
Humphrey cared not as he took as much as was needed but not enough to kill the baby as though he hated the tiny fucker, Emperor Enoch was a necessity for peace to reign on the continent.
With just enough divine aura, Humphrey transmuted a quarter of his lifespan and even took his third eye as well.
From all indications, what he was planning seemed quite risky but he cared not, and using these three materials, he stretched out his palm and softly intoned. "Glory."
The next moment, his aura changed, taking on a unique form that brimmed with divinity.
It was supposed to be an impossibility for the Mortal Wheels to grasp something as beautiful as divinity which meant that the only reason Humphrey hadn’t been struck dead by the Will of the World, was precisely because it was weakened.
Now a temporary pseudo-demigod, Humphrey knew he had little time to marvel at what he’d done as he focused on the daunting task ahead.
The billowing wind about him quieted down in an instant, after which a vacuum formed around where he stood.
"Disintegrate."
There was no sound, no excessive explosion, nothing of that sort.
Instead, it was silent, perhaps a bit too silent.
The ice castle in the distance rapidly dissolved, turning into ice crystals while revealing the situation within.
Eternal Winter had its tentacles wrapped around Adelia, the Exarchs, and Alex.
It seemed startled by the removal of its domain as its deep blue eyes shifted to reflect Humphrey in the distance.
He felt a sharp pain in his Pneuma but apart from that, he managed to remain standing.
"Truly a 1st-Class Otherworldly." Humphrey praised as he raised his hand yet again.
Alas, before he could do anything, he froze in place after which his cells began to rapidly die.
However, as quickly as he stopped moving, he regained himself again causing the Otherworldly to pause only for its gaze to reflect the baby Emperor.
Humphrey chuckled as blood gushed out of his seven orifices. "Despite being a child, you still dare contend against an Otherworldly. I do wonder how the Dark Lord managed to best you in combat."
Transmuting the air to give life to his cells, Humphrey stalemated the cell death gifted to him by Winter.
Intrigued, the 1st Class focused its attention on him, seemingly trying to understand how he was still standing.
Humphrey used this to his advantage as he transmuted the air about him and using it as material, warped space.
All it felt was a slight tug after which its captives were gone, replaced by an aggressive wind that quickly grew calm.
Meanwhile, Alex, Adelia, and the Exarchs, now free from Eternal Winter, all fell to their knees, retching as they struggled to regain themselves.
Taking a deep breath, Humphrey warped space again, taking them further away from the gaze of Winter.
Once he was sure that Winter was no longer in sight, he turned his attention to those he had rescued.
His gaze was quickly drawn to Alex as he felt something odd about him.
"You took your damn time." Adelia suddenly remarked in a hoarse tone as she took a moment to glance at him while heaving.
Humphrey smiled as he replied. "I needed to make some preparations."
"Father, your eye." Phineas intoned at that moment, having noticed Humphrey’s missing third eye.
Realizing that Humphrey was starkly different from the last time she saw him, Adelia muttered. "What did you do?"
"For an Otherworldly creature like the one back there, we need sufficient strength to be able to push it back, especially since the Aether is at its weakest."
"Still, what you have done is changed your existential structure, Father, this cannot be without cost." Finn pointed out as he understood the gravity of Humphrey’s words.
"It naturally isn’t without cost. However, the last thing we would want to do is allow that creature to establish itself given the circumstances. If it enters our world, I doubt anyone would be safe from it."
"What is the cost?" Adelia asked.
Humphrey flashed a warm smile but said nothing else as he walked over and placed Enoch next to her.
"Watch over the Emperor, only with his presence can the Empire be stable."
"Humphrey, don’t."
"Father, please reconsider."
"Stay safe." Humphrey intoned before proceeding to warp space, returning to face Eternal Winter in battle.
