Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 482: Burning Bridges
Chapter 482: Burning Bridges
"I don’t know." Arwen intoned softly as she dropped her head.
Alex comforted her. "It’s alright, you still have a long way to go."
Then to the others, he remarked. "We have to consider other alternatives."
"Like?" Douglas inquired, his mind too frayed to carry out any form of deep thought.
"Perhaps we could try getting a Warrior to deal with the ghost baby," Arwen remarked.
Nadia was the one to rebuff her suggestion. "The Warrior Wheel, though useful in most cases involving the supernatural, would be useless in this case."
"Why?" Alex inquired.
"Antimagic works by reversing the effects of an exerted Will. This means if the supernatural effects in question don’t involve Will exertion, for example, a Miracle, it would be difficult or downright impossible for antimagic to have an effect." Nadia explained, leaving Alex deep in thought and Douglas listless.
"What about Quillion?" Elena suggested.
"It could work but I doubt any of you happen to have a stash of it just lying around," Arthur remarked at the side.
Alex turned to him. "But there has to be a place we could get it, yes?"
"Even if you do get it, what then?... If I understand correctly, the baby in Emily won’t die even with Quillion. The best-case scenario would have it falling dormant. The only way to truly kill that abomination is with a Mystic or Cryptid with immense authority over the Soul Domain."
Taking a moment to gather his thoughts, Alex inquired. "What Wheel does the Soul Domain fall under?"
"Monster," Nadia replied before adding. "The Cryptid that rules over the Soul Domain is the Banshee."
Silence reigned for a while before Elena broke the ice. "I don’t think there are Monster Wheel Mystics that have imbibed the parts of a Banshee."
"There have been." Arwen corrected. "But they all have unequivocally been kidnapped or killed by the Banshees."
"Which means that’s a dead end," Douglas remarked at the side, his hope almost completely gone at this point.
Alex chided him. "Calm yourself. If you act like this, how do you expect Emily to feel?"
"Alex, she is carrying an abomination in her womb!... You don’t expect me not to panic!" Douglas cried out, earning a glare from Alex.
"So what?... Do you think sitting there and panicking would solve anything?"
"That..."
"Stop acting like some fool that hasn’t experienced trying times. You have survived those times, this time shall be no different!"
Douglas’s lips quivered as he wanted to speak but found that there was no need to do so.
Alex was right.
He had experienced trying times and had managed to come out unscathed.
But it wasn’t about him now.
Alex, the brother he once had, was gone.
He didn’t wish to lose Emily as well.
Just the thought alone broke him internally, so much so that he didn’t even dare to think of the possibility.
He had to save Emily, no matter what!
But how?... How could they possibly remove the creature currently living within her?
The answer to that question was out there and he would have to find it.
But only if he could pull himself together.
So, taking a deep breath, he managed to calm his nerves, shoving aside his panic and replacing it with cold resolve.
Even if he had to battle gods and devils, he would ensure his sister’s safety.
That was his vow and he would surely fulfill it.
"I’m sorry." He muttered in a tone almost too small to be heard but everyone heard it all the same.
Alex acknowledged his apology with a faint nod before shifting his attention to the others.
They all seemed to have realized the gravity of the situation and so, in the spirit of camaraderie, knew that only by working together would they be able to resolve the situation.
"I could look through my grimoire, maybe find some Enchantment that could slowly use the Quillion to kill the baby like how I did to suppress your Spirit body back at BoneHaven," Nadia suggested.
"What are our chances of success?" Alex inquired.
Nadia hesitated before ultimately replying. "Maybe 30%. We could start by suppressing it."
"Alright then." Alex nodded. "Then we have to figure out a way to get some Quillon."
He turned to Arthur. "Do you have a merchant on hand?"
Arthur shrugged. "Can’t be sure if they are still alive or have any stock available and to check on their conditions would take some time."
"How long?"
"Do you have a communication rig lying around somewhere in this castle?"
Alex glanced at Victoria though he already knew the answer to that.
Victoria shook her head. "Apologies master, I didn’t think there would be a need for such technology."
"It’s fine," Alex remarked as a bridge burned down rather quickly.
"Then we need to figure out another way to purchase some Quillion." Douglas intoned at the side.
Silence persisted for a bit before Arthur intoned. "To my knowledge, BlackWatch should have some Quillion in its vault, after all, that’s what they use to arm most of their Enforcers, though I doubt they would be happy to have their stock taken considering the circumstances on the ground."
"I’d rather not have the D.O.D. on our tail if we can avoid it. As is, we already have to deal with Abyss Wheel Mystics." Alex intoned before adding. "Speaking of, we might need to gain their help in combating whatever scheme the Abyss is planning."
"With the Night Kindred and Undead already loose, would they have any more to spare in the fight?" Elena inquired, a question that was met with silence as everyone was aware of the answer.
They had been out, they had seen the devastation caused by the war.
Against the Creatures of the Night and Walking Dead, the Empire was losing... and pretty badly at that.
Their only hope would be if the Creatures of the Night could stay their hand long enough for the Great Families to deal with the threat the Abyss posed.
Taking a deep breath, Alex posed a question to Arthur. "What about the TruthSeekers?... Would a member of their organization have access to some Quillion?"
Arthur shook his head. "Just like the Branches, Quillion is considered as unworthy of research, not because it is useless but because its mysteries are too esoteric to understand. For that reason, they would not need to keep something so useless in their vault."
Alex let out a sigh while massaging his temples.
Yet another bridge had burned down.
