Chapter 479: Dealing with the baby
"Alex," Douglas called out as he held onto Emily, the latter still raving with her hands covering her ears.
She was in pain, her expression showed that much and it was clear that leaving her in such a state would end in unsavory consequences.
Time was of the essence if they wished to save her.
"Alex!"
"What?" Alex was hardly pleased to be jolted from his thoughts as he glanced at Douglas.
"... You knew about the baby?"
Alex hesitated before letting out a resigned sigh. "I thought it was gone."
"Damn it, how could you make such a mistake!"
"Don’t even think about it," Alex remarked without hesitation.
Douglas was hardly about to back down. "If you saw her as your sister, you would have confirmed if the baby was still in her but no, you left because you couldn’t be bothered to know if she was okay."
"You’d best not overstep your boundaries." Alex coldly said.
"Alright, fine, go ahead, go ahead and fucking tell me if you truly see Emily as your family or just an obligation to the fucking skin you have on!"
Alex paused, unable to answer as he stared at a fuming Douglas glaring daggers at him.
"Guys..." Arwen muttered at that moment, unsure of what to make of the heated atmosphere.
Letting out a sigh, Alex offered no response and instead snapped.
The next moment, a starry sky unfurled before the eyes of everyone present.
A deep sense of calm emerged, swiftly dealing with the abounding negative emotions.
It was brief but Douglas’s expression contorted before he managed to relax, taking on a softer demeanor.
Emily calmed down as well and her expression shifted, though she still seemed to be in slight pain.
Noting this, Alex pushed at her a bit more with the essence of Eternal Night, allowing her to enter a deep sleep, affording her a sense of reprieve from whatever torment she was experiencing.
Seeing this, Douglas touched Emily’s cheek with a relieved look on his face.
Seconds passed before Alex inquired. "All good?"
"... I’m sorry," Douglas muttered softly.
"It’s fine. You have a point but now is hardly the time to argue. We missed the opportunity to deal with the ghost baby back then and now, we have no choice but to do something before that nun returns with reinforcement."
Douglas frowned as he looked up at Alex. "How do you know that?"
"I’d rather assume she would than she won’t."
"The chances of two Abyss Wheel Mystics working together are extremely slim. They have a toxic level of competition among themselves, always trying to prove whose master has a more corruptive influence over our reality." Arthur intoned from behind.
Alex glanced at him. "But what are the chances under the current circumstances?"
Arthur hesitated but ultimately replied. "The continent is in disarray, there are talks of a Messiah, and what’s worse, the yin floating in the air is at an all-time high. I can’t think of a better time for those bastards to want to work together toward a common course."
"They would want to take advantage of the war." Victoria intoned from the side.
"Before anything, we need to keep the ghost baby," Alex remarked, causing Douglas to frown.
"Why?"
"We have the controlling rights in this case. The nun and whomever she is working with are sure to come looking for Emily. If we deal with the baby, what are the chances that the Mother of Lost Souls would just create another one?"
"But the baby would need a similar amount of time to grow."
"What if it won’t?" Alex inquired. "The baby remained dormant in Emily until that nun arrived. What if the only reason it hadn’t done anything was because it was disconnected from the Mother of Lost Souls?... I’m not saying to put Emily’s life in danger, however, we need to ensure that the enemies think they have a chance of reclaiming the Virgin Mother."
"That’s risky." Arthur intoned from his seated position. "If we are going off the chance that the nun comes looking with a helper, what are the chances that the helper won’t be more than one?... Or that the helper won’t be a person with divine origins?... If you are thinking of the possibilities, you can’t just think of the ones that suit you."
"You are right," Alex confessed.
He might have been too caught up in his desire to use the situation to his advantage.
Putting Emily’s life at risk just for a chance at completing his Trials was nothing short of diabolical and not a good path to take.
"All in favor of dealing with the baby?" Alex inquired, turning to face the girls.
The girls exchanged looks for a moment before inquiring in tandem. "What baby?"
Pausing, Alex realized that he might have to catch them up to speed on the current state of events.
With that understanding, he carried out a quick snap narration, providing the important details while cutting out the non-important parts.
By the time he was done, Arwen was intrigued, Nadia was horrified, Victoria was frowning and Elena couldn’t help but wonder what it felt like to be pregnant.
In the long but short life of Princess Berenice of Thebes, one of the few mysteries she hadn’t managed to uncover was the mystery of childbirth.
Taking a moment to refocus, they all came up with the unanimous decision to deal with the abomination before it took further root on Emily’s body.
But then, a problem arose.
How were they to deal with it?
"Just to confirm, Victoria, you can’t do anything, correct?" Alex inquired with Victoria nodding.
"The Domains of Spiritomancy and Souls may sound similar but couldn’t be more distinct. I have no means of interacting with the Pneuma."
"I see," Alex muttered with a hint of disappointment.
He wondered if Rune would have been a sufficient method to deal with the situation but then again, he couldn’t be sure.
"What about Enchantments?" Douglas inquired from the side.
Nadia replied. "Enchantments don’t work like that."
"What if I tried burning her?" Arwen inquired. "Perhaps I might be able to induce death in the baby."
"What are the chances that you would end up damaging Emily’s pneuma as well?" Alex inquired, causing Arwen to pause.
After a bit of silence, she replied. "... I don’t know."
