Chapter 461: An upheaval greater than the Great Calamity

The border city of BlackWatch had only ever experienced such an upheaval once in its 900-year history.

The last time was during the disaster that turned the Southern Prairie into the Southern Ruins, a disaster that claimed the lives of up to a hundred million souls, a disaster that almost heralded the emergence of not one, not two, but three 2nd-Class Otherworldly.

None could dare to say they were not familiar with the casualties incurred that day to protect the Empire which was why receiving an upheaval not just similar but even greater than that great calamity, caused everyone to panic as they rushed around trying to establish contact with their forces around the Empire.

Veronica, leader of the Valkyries, stood at the center of the great hall where the Greater Space Dial was installed, a device one step higher than the Space Dial which had a detection range spanning the entire Empire.

She was flanked by two of her subordinates, her eyes staring at the device as it gave off indications of Incursions happening at two different locations with one of the two having already surpassed the level of an ordinary breach.

"Have we been able to reach out to the Family Heads?" She inquired as one of the head engineers came to meet her.

"Not yet. From what we could tell, the battlefields are in a state of disarray, we can’t be sure if it’s because of the incursions or because of the Vampires."

"Have the Incursion points been determined?"

"Yes. So far, we have detected the first close to the Southern Outpost."

"And the second?" Veronica inquired.

The man hesitated. "We can’t be sure but from all indications, it might be close to the center of the Empire."

"I see." Veronica’s expression turned grim as she remarked. "Prepare for Disaster Protocol 509. We cannot and will not allow the Empire to succumb to the machinations of the Abyss."

"Understood, my lady." The engineer quickly hurried to share the word while Veronica remained with her guards.

Soon, one of them spoke up. "Shouldn’t we move out now?... We have had to stay still, watching as Zion is ripped apart by so many foes."

"We can’t move. If we do so, that means we have already lost the war." Veronica remarked with a heavy sigh. "We are the last line of defense, Gretchen. We have a duty to uphold."

"But still..."

"Let us trust in the instincts of the Saints. They understood the consequences when they asked that we guard BlackWatch. This city must stand and without our presence, it won’t. You should understand this."

"I understand," Gretchen remarked though she still felt dissatisfied with the situation.

However, it was understandable.

Veronica was also dissatisfied but she understood that if they were to leave, the Defense Headquarters would be defenseless, allowing the Night Kindred to sever the heart of the Empire’s defense.

So she could only hope, hope that the situation wouldn’t reach the extent where they would have to abandon the heart though with the presence of Incursions, that hope had begun to dim.

Taking a deep breath, she ordered one of her subordinates. "Get me a direct line to Miss Adelia Augustus. If the Incursion is at the center of the Empire, she should be able to handle it... hopefully."

Aiden stood with a grim expression on his visage as he stared at the pillar-like tentacle currently reaching toward the sky.

To think that he hadn’t sensed anything before it got to such an extent.

"Master." His homunculi assistant came to stand beside him while behind, Enforcers, armed and ready, didn’t dare to stare at the sight ahead for fear of losing their minds.

"I can’t believe I didn’t sense anything," Aiden muttered, revealing his surprise.

"It was smart enough to blend itself in the residual abyssal aura that resides upon the lands. However, it is worrisome to think that an Otherworldly, a being of madness, would be smart."

Aiden grimaced. "The thought bothers me greatly."

"Do we attack?"

"We can’t attack foolishly. The aura around that pillar radiates with intense corruption. As it is, I might be the only one capable of sending it back to where it came from."

"But why haven’t you?" The homunculi was quick to inquire.

"Because it’s just there," Aiden remarked. "It should have attacked, it should have extended further, but it didn’t. We could say it’s because the breach it created isn’t large enough to fit its whole body, but that still would lead to another question."

"Why did it then decide to reveal itself even though it could have remained hidden and worked on the breach to widen it enough."

"Indeed." Aiden nodded. "There is something wrong here."

Just then, an Enforcer rushed to the gathered troops, calling out to Aiden.

"Speak," Aiden remarked loudly, keeping his gaze on the towering tentacle ahead.

"We received word from BlackWatch. This isn’t the only Incursion."

Aiden’s expression froze as he finally turned back to face the Enforcer. "What?"

"There are others, one presumed to be at the center of the Empire."

"A First Class Otherworldly?"

"Indeed, General."

Aiden’s expression remained impassive though the apprehension felt by every other person was not lost on him.

"An upheaval greater than the Great Calamity. Just what is going on?" Aiden muttered, hoping to figure something out instead of blindly rushing into battle.

It made no sense, why would something like that happen now?

The catalyst for the Great Calamity was Lincoln and his insane drive to kill Ana.

So what was the catalyst for this?... He felt like he was missing an important piece.

Just then, the homunculi assistant intoned. "Master, someone is there."

Aiden turned and looked in the direction of the tentacle.

There, a woman stood, her body glowing with a pale light that seemed like a poor imitation of the Lightbringer.

She seemed to smile as Aiden locked eyes with her after which she raised her palm.

The next moment, a beam of pale light shot forward with destructive intent.
