Chapter 443: A Beautiful Truth

Chapter 443: A Beautiful Truth

"Ah!!!" Agnes screamed in terror as Leonard’s brain matter splattered all over, drawing the attention of the others as they glanced back only to freeze in horror.

The unfortunate Nester’s headless body dropped unceremoniously with a dull thud with Agnes falling to her knees still screaming, overwhelmed at the sight of her beloved’s corpse.

"What happened?" Ulysses asked in confusion as they all moved to support Agnes.

However, in her shaken state, she shoved them aside and turned toward the sea of flames, intent on finding what had ended her husband’s life so quickly.

But all she saw were colors, colors with a light so bright, they seemed to erase the blue light illuminating this strange world.

Her eyes reflected the mishmash of radiance after which, she saw it too, and then...

Pop

Her head exploded instantly, causing the other Nesters to erupt in terror as they turned and ran without looking back, unsure of what had caused two members of their group to die though fear prevented them from carrying out further investigation.

They fled, their legs carrying them faster than what was possible for a normal human.

Only after they had gotten far enough did they finally stop to catch their breath and in that brief moment, Amara fell to her knees trembling while the men exchanged looks with one another, confusion etched on their faces.

They all seemed to have the same question on their minds; what happened?

"It’s most likely the fire, it..." Timon trailed off as they all noticed the glow of the colorful flames reflecting on their surroundings once again.

Then, in conjunction with the others, he turned to stare at Amara who was currently ablaze, her body engulfed by the esoteric fire.

Ulysses covered his mouth with his palm as his breathing turned erratic, his previous bold demeanor gone, replaced with that of a terrified young boy.

Amara reached out to Anthony and in a hoarse voice tinged with pain, she begged. "Help."

But instead of coming closer, Anthony backed away and watched as she slowly turned to ashes.

"No!" Andrew suddenly exclaimed as he instinctively moved to help her only for Timon to hold him back.

"Damn it you idiot, stop!"

"We have to do something!"

Luckily and unfortunately, Timon was able to hold him back long enough for Amara to turn to ashes, a resigned expression the last thing etched on her visage.

Only after the fire completely burned out did Timon let go of Andrew.

Instead of gratitude, Andrew turned back and punched Timon, sending the latter crashing to the ground, right beside an open book that had fallen out after Amara had turned to ashes.

Anthony immediately moved to hold him back while Timon was drawn to the book which had an image of the colorful flames drawn on it, no doubt a result of Amara’s pencil work.

"You bastards!... You just watched her die!" Andrew bellowed as he struggled to get away from Anthony though he proved stronger than anticipated.

"Will you calm down!?"

"She was our sister!"

"There was nothing we could do!" Anthony exclaimed in annoyance, frustrated that Andrew had allowed his emotions to cloud his thoughts.

"Do you think we are happy seeing our siblings dropping like flies?"

"But..."

"But nothing!" Andrew exclaimed as he shoved Andrew. "No matter what, we cannot act like fools."

Turning back, Andrew glared at Anthony with the latter prepared to shoot down whatever argument he would bring.

Finally, Andrew closed his eyes and let out a defeated sigh. "What now?"

"Now we run. We head back to Eventide and make sure no one ever comes down here."

"... Alright," Andrew muttered. "Let’s go."

Just as he turned to address Timon, a knife came out of nowhere and plunged into his eye, ridding him of his life.

"Andrew!" Anthony exclaimed in shock while Ulysses fell on his buttocks, his palm still covering his mouth as he stared at his uncle Timon who currently had half his face covered in colorful flames while holding the dagger that killed Andrew.

Seeing this, Anthony plunged into despair. "No, not you too, Timon."

Timon put up the book he was carrying as he muttered. "I understand everything now."

"Timon..."

"I know what they saw."

"Don’t."

"It was..."

"Ulysses, cover your ears!" Anthony exclaimed as he rushed Timon.

Ulysses did as instructed, using his hands to cover his ears while he watched his father tackle his favorite uncle to the ground.

He watched his father punch Timon repeatedly only to freeze, almost like he had happened upon an indescribable truth.

"Father!" Ulysses exclaimed in terror only for Anthony to glance in his direction, tears trailing down his cheeks.

"Run."

The next moment, the colorful flames erupted yet again, claiming Anthony.

"Ah!...Ah!... Ah!" Ulysses nearly went mad as he watched his father turn to dust while his uncle Timon got back to his feet, half of his face still alight.

Ulysses glared at him. "Why are you still alive!... Why don’t you burn!"

"Because unlike them, I accepted the truth. Would you like to hear the truth, Ulysses?... It is a beautiful truth." As Timon spoke, more than half of his body was claimed by the colorful flames but still, he did not turn to ash.

"I hate you!" Ulysses bellowed while Timon chuckled.

"Come boy, come and embrace the truth."

Clenching his jaw, Ulysses pulled out a flute from his bag and without hesitation, began to play, unleashing a song that told of the land, the seas, and the air, of travels far and wide, of a rolling stone covered in moss, of a man without a home, of a man... on a journey.

A powerful gust of wind erupted, heralding the emergence of a deity, though Timon could care less as he took steady steps towards Ulysses.

As he reached out a hand to grab the boy, a hand reached out and held his own.

Timon paused before glancing at the origin of the hand.

It was a humanoid being with the head of an avian, the body of a man, the back fins and gills of a fish, and the legs of a cheetah with its skin covered in strange symbols. It carried a backpack and all around it, words carrying knowledge about the vast lands it had been to, floated unimpeded like the wind.

It was a deity!... And one that had reached Demigod status, no less.

Timon grinned. "Ancestor, I have great news, I have discovered the truth of the world."

Foulness

The demigod uttered in disgust as they proceeded to swiftly slit his throat, ending Timon’s life.

With the problem dealt with, the Nester Ancestor turned to face Ulysses, finding the young boy almost at his wit’s end.

You did well calling for me. Where are the rest?

"Dead," Ulysses muttered softly as he fell to his knees before proceeding to bawl his eyes out.

I see. Unfortunate but such is the life of an explorer. We face obstacles to map the entirety of our world. Come child, I will take you home now.

Ulysses sniffled as he reached out to take the hand stretched out to him only for their surroundings to suddenly be illuminated by a myriad color scheme.

The Nester Ancestor, noticing the emergence of a powerful presence, turned to regard the figure in a bid to determine whether they were friend or foe only for Ulysses to scream out, almost instinctively.

"Don’t look!"

Alas, his words were a second too late as the Demigod gazed upon the source of the myriad color scheme, his expression shifting into one of absolute terror before his body erupted into flames.

Ulysses screamed just as an illusory golden figure rushed into his body.

The next moment, he blacked out.
