Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 414: Between a rock and a hard place
Chapter 414: Between a rock and a hard place
The illusory hand covered in strange symbols held onto the hems of the rip in space as though it were a mere cloth before proceeding to pull it, seeking to enlarge it enough for its full body to enter.
Common sense dictated that she wasn’t to let that happen but Victoria was too enamored by fear that she found herself unable to move an inch or say a word.
Opal, her loyal feline companion also trembled as it backed away though it stood in front of its Mistress, unwilling to leave her be.
Alas, the Ice Lion behind was not as courageous or loyal as at the first sign of trouble, it fled back into the Spirit World, leaving Victoria to face the music alone.
As her breathing quickened, Victoria struggled to speak, to say something but her mind was a muddled mess with no word coming up despite her best efforts.
As the void crack seemed to expand ever so slightly, so did the invasive aura of whatever owned the illusory hand seem to enter further into their world.
With no other choice, Victoria pulled on Evernight without restraint, even utilizing the Blessings of the Black Moon which resulted in a black and white circle appearing on her forehead.
Wrestling with the terror that left her immobile for a bit too long, Victoria gained enough leeway to chant.
Open sesame!
Alas, there was no response as in her heart, she was familiar with only one Spirit that could make a difference in her current predicament.
Unfortunately, it would seem that the great figure was still taking a nap.
"Damn it, answer the fucking call!" Victoria cursed aloud as she chanted again, letting go of her reserved nature as it would matter for naught should whatever owned the illusory hand succeed in breaching the gap.
So she chanted, again and again, while pulling back only to pause as she sensed something.
Whirling back, she found that the Spirit she’d summoned to hold the Light Stealers had returned to the Spirit World at some point, leaving the Stealers to roam free once again.
Zeroing in on her location, they made their way toward her, oblivious to the void crack brimming with life on the other side.
Trapped between a rock and a hard place, Victoria found herself nearing the brink of hopelessness.
Gritting her teeth, she bellowed. "Fuck!"
Instead of letting fear devour her senses, Victoria let anger lead instead as she understood that she couldn’t die now.
She had yet to see the promised Land that the Dark Lord was to lead the Night Kindred to.
She had yet to serve him well, so how could she go now?
With that in mind, Victoria chanted.
Open sesame
Immediately, a fox with three eyes and three tails emerged from a Spirit portal.
"Mirren, Opal, we are attempting Convergence." She remarked without hesitation as she backed away from the Light Stealers and the void in space.
The two Higher Spirits exchanged looks before transmitting their worries to her.
Before now, Victoria had never tried Convergence which involved merging with a Spirit Creature as there was never a need to, and also, because it was quite dangerous.
The possibility of losing her sense of self and becoming a Spirit Creature was too high to risk it, even if the level of her Contracted Spirits was considerably low.
But it was either she took the risk or she died at the hands of either the Light Stealers or the owner of the illusory hand.
Watching the void crack expand again, the choice was a no-brainer.
"Now!" She commanded.
Opal and Mirren exchanged looks once again before finally heeding the words of their Mistress.
They both turned into immaterial orbs of light before streaking into Victoria’s body.
Victoria gasped as an unnatural wave struck her, leaving her immobile for a moment.
However, in that brief space of time, a Light Stealer came upon her, the opportunity to steal a light but an arm’s length away.
It stretched its hand forward only to pause as several threads suddenly emerged from the emptiness of space, ensnaring it.
Victoria opened her eyes, revealing them to be pure white, devoid of her dark irises.
With an impassive expression, she glanced at the Light Stealer as furry white tails numbering 3 with dark blue flame tongues at the tips emerged from her waist.
As the Light Stealer struggled to free itself, Victoria turned away only for one of the tails to stretch out and touch the monstrosity with the flame tongue it carried.
Immediately, the creature burst into flames which caused it to go dormant, almost as though it were dead.
Shifting her gaze over to the others approaching, Victoria spread out her palms with sharp nails emerging from her fingertips.
She zipped forward faster than ever, cutting, slashing, and burning as she incapacitated all of them in a minute before shifting her attention to the void crack.
At this point, an entire arm was visible with the crack noticeably larger than before.
Victoria heaved as she slowly made her way toward it.
The effects of Convergence had already begun to take a toll on her, slowing down her movement to a dangerous degree.
But she didn’t stop as she knew the owner of the illusory hand was the main threat in the cavern.
However, just as she got within a few meters of the rip, the arm suddenly retracted back into the void.
Thinking this to be a good sign, Victoria would soon come to regret that thought as an eye too enormous to be human and too alien to be any living creature from Eventide appeared from beyond the void.
Something seemed to crack in Victoria at that moment as she fell to her knees and dropped her head before proceeding to claw at her face like a maniac.
As flesh ripped away and blood spilled, more than half of Victoria’s face was ruined before she managed to regain a bit of her sanity.
Both Opal and Mirren left her body as Convergence ended, the two quickly disappearing into the Spirit World for reasons unknown, leaving Victoria to fall unceremoniously to the ground.
Just as her consciousness began to fail her, she softly chanted.
Open sesame
Silence followed and with a resigned sigh, she fainted.
However, a moment later, a spirit gate formed and out of it, the Witch of Fables emerged.
She glanced at Victoria, finding the Vampire on the brink of death.
Hesitant at first, she decided to help as she took a page out of the book she carried and sent it toward Victoria’s unmoving body.
As it turned illusory, penetrating her skin, Victoria’s lifeforce was rejuvenated enough though the residual corruption of what she’d seen remained.
The Witch did not attempt to make eye contact with what was beyond the void as she sighed regretfully while pulling out yet another page from her book.
She seemed unwilling to utilize the page but knowing what was at stake, she ended up tossing it in the direction of the void crack.
The alien eye seeing this, turned away, allowing the crack to be sealed.
The Witch’s form became noticeably less material with the book in her hand glowing with an ominous light.
Clicking her tongue in faint resignation, she muttered.
Hopefully, your master will be grateful enough to remember this act of service when the time comes for us to meet again.
Leaving those words behind, the Witch returned to the Spirit World, allowing the cavern to descend into an eerie silence.
