Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 412: The Golden Child

Chapter 412: The Golden Child

Alex stood, hunched over, as he could barely remain standing after suffering the first attack from the Emperor.

Yet he was supposed to experience two more of these.

Gasping as whatever the Emperor had done ravaged his insides, Alex drew on Evernight, utilizing his authority to try and offset some of the damage.

Then, he spoke. "I am... a flesh-eating bacteria. Skin ravaging, innards destroying..."

Enoch froze at that moment as his flesh began to break down in real time though it only damaged a fraction of his entire skin before it stopped.

Then the childish grin returned, followed by his comeback. "I am... a hot summer wind. Drought-inducing, bacteria-killing."

Alex gasped as visible cracks emerged on his skin, an uncanny amount of pain leaving him incapacitated with no chance of talking back.

Seeing this, Elena stepped forward, though hesitant, and remarked. "I am..."

She trailed off, her mind racing to figure out the best counter to Enoch’s attack.

"Go on." Enoch prodded. "I’m listening."

Taking a deep breath to calm her nerves, Elena replied. "I am... the sea."

She added no descriptions as she closed her eyes and instead, let her mind do the talking.

The next time she opened her eyes, they were in the middle of an expansive ocean with no land in sight.

Enoch was taken aback by the change set up by Elena but he hardly had the time to question how she’d done this as a wave so humongous it could drown the capital arose at that moment before crashing down with furious might.

There was a cry of pain as Enoch emerged from the depths of the ocean, glaring hatefully at Elena.

"You really are just a cheap copy." He spat coldly before he began. "I am... an overlapping dimension. Ocean swallowing, insect dwelling."

Instantly, the scenery changed from a tempestuous ocean to a desert filled with sand as far as the eyes could see.

However that was just the beginning as seconds later, several scorpions emerged from the sand and rushed at Elena, hardly giving her a chance to escape before they climbed her body and stung her to numbness.

She fell to the ground like a log of wood after the scorpions scattered, her entire body paralyzed with the only thing capable of movement being her neck and eyes.

Her breathing slowed tremendously, making it like she was on the cusp of death.

Enoch grinned at this as it meant that only one remained.

Then Alex spoke, his voice calm despite the fact they were losing. "I am... the darkness. World devouring, calm-inducing."

The desert quickly disappeared and in its place, a darkness so thick one couldn’t even see their own body emerged, providing solace to Elena while attempting to devour Enoch.

Enoch laughed. "I knew I sensed something familiar. You share a connection with primordial darkness."

Alex remained silent as he watched Enoch offset the damage the darkness had on him before going ahead to remark.

"I am... the first flame. Light giving, impurity destroying..."

A single flame tongue emerged amid the darkness before it expanded and then erupted into a wave that illuminated everything.

The flames wrapped around Alex and Elena, burning them until they were charred terribly.

Close to death and with no hope of survival, Elena struggled to speak, her lips parting though no words were heard.

The next moment, they were in a world blessed by nature with tall grasses covering the landscape as far as the eyes could see.

Enoch snorted. "Accept your loss already, you can’t win."

Then, almost like he wished to prove a point, he remarked. "I am... the end."

Immediately, the sky above turned blood red as red lightning flashed after which the entire landscape was engulfed in crimson flames and the earth split apart.

As Alex and Elena dropped to the floor while breathing their last, the former spoke, drawing upon every ounce of energy in him to remark.

"I am..."

At first glance, everything seemed normal but on further scrutiny, it was easy to guess what was wrong.

The sight before his eyes was a perfect rendition of the world outside with a glaring difference.

Everything seemed to be a drawing, one made by a child no doubt owing to the cartoonish proportions on display.

Douglas couldn’t quite wrap his head around how such a world came to be and so decided to attribute it as some sort of effect that occurred due to the Godstone.

Speaking of, how was he to locate the Branch?

The land seemed expansive, running on for miles with no sign of the Ashtyx in sight.

He couldn’t afford to waste too much time as he knew the others were waiting outside for him but then what was he to do?

Just as he began to formulate a plan to deal with the dilemma he faced, he heard an innocent voice from behind him.

"Are you looking for me?"

He whirled around to find a child dressed in a simple attire of a brown jacket with a white shirt and brown trousers.

But it wasn’t the fact that a child was in this painted world that set Douglas off or that the child had snuck up on him without his knowledge.

No, it was simply because the child’s skin seemed to be made of gold and glowed with a faint golden radiance.

As the dust cloud cleared, the Gryphon found himself staring at the desolate battlefield.

Utilizing his Spirituality, he sought out the remains of his opponent only to be met with... nothing.

His expression shifted as he knew there was no way he’d have missed.

So what happened?... He’d taken into account teleportation and the like which was why he had utilized the gravitational field which meant they hadn’t left the vicinity.

But then... hardly had he begun to ponder the whereabouts of his prey when the earth below undulated like a liquid after which Nadia emerged with Ana and Arwen, all three appearing unscathed from the disaster he’d unleashed.
