Chapter 409: Death and Destruction

The tunnel stretched on seemingly for miles on end leading to Victoria and Douglas running as fast as possible while searching for an exit.

Soon enough, they found one but then were quickly met with a most chilling sight as hundreds of Light Stealers stood in the large hall where the Blackgold gate resided.

Their blank faces were turned in their direction, seemingly scrutinizing them before they slowly began to approach, their steps slow albeit steady.

Victoria regarded with interest for a moment before calmly intoning. "They are like nothing I’ve ever seen."

"Perhaps this isn’t the right time for a study, Lady Victoria?" Douglas couldn’t help but mutter as he had a feeling these creatures were a bad fit for his particular set of skills.

Of course that didn’t stop him from unleashing his Power causing everything to stop.

Though the problem was dealt with rather easily, therein lay the next problem for them to tackle.

Douglas couldn’t remain here dealing with the Light Stealers as his target was the Godstone on the other side of the Blackgold gate.

Victoria leaped down suddenly without warning, stepping into the midst of the Light Stealers as she scrutinized them thoroughly with a thoughtful gaze.

"Lady Victoria..." Douglas called out as he began to reach his mentally accepted limit.

"A moment," Victoria responded, taking a few more seconds to study before finally nodding.

Then, raising a palm above, she softly intoned.

Open sesame

A spirit gate appeared in the void of space and out of it, a High Spirit made of mud with glowing yellow eyes slowly poured down, quickly filling up the space the Light Stealers occupied before hardening into a substance harder than concrete.

Of course, it did well not to touch Victoria while at it, ensuring that she stepped away unharmed before continuing forward toward the Blackgold gate which stood eerily silent.

However, on reaching a certain distance, she suddenly paused, her expression twisted ever so slightly as the anti-magic runes on the door began to glow.

Douglas, freed from the troubling task of holding the Light Stealers back, arrived at her side and was immediately met with the force that kept Victoria at bay.

"Those runes are incredibly powerful." Douglas couldn’t help but comment in a tense tone as he stared at them.

Victoria nodded though she didn’t seem happy agreeing with Douglas’s sentiment. "They are. Going closer would be suicide."

"What now?" Douglas inquired.

Instead of responding, Victoria chanted the words to open a spirit gate causing the Great Ice Lion Spirit she’d summoned in the Wandering Forest to emerge.

"I require the object." She spoke cordially with the Lion nodding before opening its mouth and regurgitating an ice block.

Within, the Wanderers Key was kept perfectly intact.

Satisfied, Victoria took a deep breath before proceeding to split open the block and take out the key within.

Instantly, a destructive force erupted, catching everyone off guard.

Despite their best efforts, Ana, Arwen, and Nadia watched as the pixelation trumped it all, over and over again until they had no choice but to accept that they were wasting their time.

"What now?" Arwen huffed, feeling rather frustrated with how her first mission was panning out.

Just as Ana turned to answer, a resplendent glow reminiscent of the Lightbringer above caught their attention.

It surged from the depths of the capital before coming to land a few meters away from them only for the light to recede, revealing a middle-aged man.

"You..." Ana trailed off as she recognized the man.

He shared an uncanny semblance with the Monster Wheel Mystic who would have healed her of her corruption if Ana hadn’t bolted from the capital after realizing the truth it held.

"Lady Anastasia Aizagora, it is an honor to meet you." The man greeted cordially.

"Who is he?" Nadia inquired with Ana replying.

"I don’t know. He looks so much like the Mystic I met when I visited this place several years ago but it’s impossible that man is still alive. The average life expectancy of Mystics isn’t even 150."

"Ah, I believe that man was my grandfather."

Ana paused before shifting her attention to the man dressed as a butler.

"Your grandfather?"

"Indeed."

Ana felt a discordance as she stared at the man only for Nadia to suddenly step up.

"Why are you here?"

"I believe I should be asking you that. You are causing a nuisance to the capital, Lady Aizagora. Perhaps you have a message from the Family Heads for his majesty?"

Ana remained silent, studying the man with a deep sense of unease welling up within before she decided on her next course of action.

She suddenly disappeared from her position, appearing a moment later before the middle aged man who tried to act only to be caught by the wrist.

Then, Ana’s will descended on him.

Immediately, the man transformed, taking on a younger appearance with blonde hair.

"You..."

"Help me." The young man muttered only for his hand to move on its own, grabbing Ana’s wrist and burning it with the fury of the Lightbringer.

Ana screamed before pulling her arm away though all she ended up doing was pull back an empty stump, the rest of her palm still in the young man’s clutches.

Then, his visage returned to that of an old man with a sickening grin on his lips.

"It’s been so long..." The man remarked while licking his lips, his noble demeanor from before all but gone.

At this point, he resembled a hunter eyeing prey as he stared hungrily at Ana who was glaring at him while holding her palmless wrist.

Both Arwen and Nadia prepared to act only for Ana to stop them as she inquired. "Who exactly are you?"

"Would that question change anything?"

"... Perhaps."

"No, I don’t think so."

Then he moved, utilizing his innate strength to close the distance between himself and Ana before reaching out to grab her neck, his authority over the domain of Day radiating until it became a tangible force.

He planned to end her life.
