Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 400: Back to life
Chapter 400: Back to life
It was instinctual.
She hadn’t planned to kill him.
Maybe wound him, but not kill.
But the events of the day had ensured that Lyra was hardly in a calm state.
0127’s journal had made her realize certain truths that she and most of her kind had ignored for several years.
Coupled with the troublesome situation with the Relics, she was hardly in the best state to react properly to Alex’s actions which was why his cold body now lay silent on the platform, devoid of life.
Letting out a sigh, she moved her free hand, utilizing weapon control to pry the double-edged sword from the dead body before instructing the Taskmasters behind her.
"Burn the body, far away from here. I’d rather not want a zombie corrupted by the whispers emerging around here."
The Taskmasters nodded in response after which she handed over the doubled-edged sword to the one who owned it before making her way back into the Archives.
The Taskmasters approached the dead body and picked it up before making their way outside.
Just like that, everything seemed to have been resolved.
Unbeknownst to all those present, however, an indecipherable mist sharing certain humanoid features emerged from the dead body and swiftly made its way underwater.

An audible gasp escaped his lips as he opened his eyes to find himself in the underwater cavern which was halfway close to being submerged by water from above.
His breathing erratic, Alex instinctively reached for his chest where the doubled-edged sword had plunged into his body, ridding it of life.
It was a risky endeavor and there was a chance of failure but what plan was ever perfect?
With a smile on his face, he quickly calmed his breathing before rising to his feet and snapping, teleporting directly into the hole drilled by the Draconic Centipedes.
Immediately, he began the climb, noting that he had limited time to do what was necessary before his escape route would be completely blocked.
It took an equivalent amount of time as the last but regardless, Alex arrived at the blocked hole he’d made previously.
Pushing it open, he found himself back on the sixth floor of the Archives, only that it looked completely different.
Most of the Relics were pinned down by weapons possessing anti-magic runes while emanating waves of antimagic and seemed to vibrate from time to time, revealing that the mode of sealing was but a temporary solution.
There was also a notable amount of candelabras lit in the hall, causing a sweet smell that seemed quite soothing to the mind while suppressing the whispers that plagued the expansive structure.
Taking a deep breath, Alex immediately rushed forward, making his way toward where he recalled it being.
However, hardly had he taken more than a few steps when he couldn’t help but feel like the weapons holding down the Relics were staring at him.
It immediately clicked for him.
These were similar to the weapons patrolling outside!
The Family head was aware of his presence!
At the same time on the second floor, Oswald paused what he was doing as a frown painted his young-looking visage.
"What in the world?"
Perplexed by the feedback his weapons were sending, he immediately left his quarters, making his way to the elevator to quickly get to the sixth floor.
Meanwhile, Alex on the sixth floor, realizing he had limited time, made a beeline for the glass case placed in a corner of the sealing hall while counting the seconds in his mind.
By the time he got to twenty-five, he had arrived before his quarry, quickly picking it up before turning and heading for his getaway ticket.
Yet another twenty-five passed but by then, the weapons had begun to vibrate at an incredibly fast rate, creating sound waves that left Alex feeling disoriented.
The Family head was close!
He didn’t even bother to waste any more time as he sent the glass case down the hole before going down as well.
By the time Oswald arrived in the sealing hall, the hole was closed and Alex was on his way to his extraction point.
"Just who was that man?" Oswald couldn’t help but wonder as he glanced toward a pedestal that now lay conspicuously empty.
***
He found himself sitting in the park with Isabella at his side.
A smile played on his lips as he watched Mary Jane play soccer with her friends.
It was crazy how such a petite little girl was bullying boys her age.
She got more than her mother’s looks it would seem.
"Do you really have to go?" Isabella inquired softly as she held his hand, squeezing a little tight.
Alex glanced at her, holding her brown eyes for a moment before replying. "I don’t have a choice."
"Sometimes I wish you’d stop, you know. That you’d just stay home. MJ misses you though she doesn’t say anything."
Alex hesitated, unsure of how best to respond.
Knowing his struggles, Isabella muttered. "But I know you can’t. I’m proud of you and even though it doesn’t seem like it, MJ is proud of you too."
"She is?" Alex instinctively inquired as he glanced at his little girl.
It seemed she had just scored another goal... what the hell were those boys doing?
"Indeed. She calls her dad Superman who goes out saving the world."
"... That’s good."
"Just don’t forget your family while you’re out there being Superman okay?... We also need you here."
Alex pursed his lips before ultimately replying. "They said I could retire after 3 more missions. This is the first, nothing will stop me from getting the third."
As he spoke, he turned to behold Isabella’s beauty once more, watching as a warm smile emerged at the corner of her lips.
"That’s good."
With that, she laid on his shoulder, and briefly, tranquility suffused the moment.
Then she spoke again. "I guess you should get going then."
"What?"
"They are waiting. Your team." Isabella remarked. "You should go."
Confused at her strange words, Alex glanced at her to find that she was gone.
Not just her, the park was empty.
Just as confusion got a foothold in his mind, the world went dark and he heard his name being called.
"Alex!"
