Chapter 389: Nah, I’d win

The familiar lavender smell served as a reminder that he had returned to that beautiful place he called home, even if it were just for a moment and a mere imitation.

He reveled in it, enjoying the memories as they flitted by.

"What’s the mission this time?" Isabella asked playfully as she set the table.

Alex replied. "Top secret, just know it’s gonna be a headache for the team."

He tried to steal a fruit from the fruit platter but Isabella was quick to swat his hands away, eyeing him for a moment before going ahead to respond.

"Oh come on, I don’t believe that. You are the smartest spy I know, there’s no problem you cannot solve, no criminal you cannot catch."

"Well, my dear wife, not all problems can be solved with smarts. We require brains and brawn."

"I see," Isabella muttered before proceeding to sit next to him, her process of setting the table half-finished.

"What?"

"Tell me."

"Huh?"

"Yeah, okay, you might not be able to tell me the whole mission briefing but I doubt it’s the whole thing that’s an issue, so what part is the problem?... Perhaps this housewife would be able to proffer a solution."

"Oh, are you claiming to be smarter than yours truly?" Alex inquired playfully.

"You said it, not me."

Chuckling, Alex tried to speak up only for his stomach to growl.

"Perhaps we could finish setting the table first."

"Speak."

"Oh gosh." Sighing helplessly, Alex remarked. "Alright, there’s a big bad and we have to take him down. Unfortunately, that big bad has more men than can be logically mustered for this mission. It’s meant to be an in and out, but our team has only myself at the forefront and I doubt I’d be able to take out so many, even with smarts."

"I see," Isabella muttered, her expression turning thoughtful as she pondered the matter thoroughly.

Seeing as she was mentally busy, Alex proceeded to sneak a fruit into his mouth.

A swat later and he was forced to resign himself to his fate.

"How about instead of thinking about taking them one at a time, just hit them once, really hard."

"What?" Alex furrowed his brows, not following Isabella’s logic.

"You say there are too many enemies, right?"

"Well, yeah."

"Great, so instead of thinking about how to take each one out. Think of a way to take them out collectively, if not silently, then with a big enough boom that you could have the time to escape if necessary."

"That... actually works," Alex muttered, feeling embarrassed that he hadn’t thought of it.

Why was he thinking that they had to deal with all the goons to get to the target?... Just take them all out at once and be done with it.

"But that would need precise timing else it could end up resulting in unnecessary casualties and defeating the purpose of the in and out."

Isabella flashed a warm smile as she reached out and tapped his temple. "And that, my dear husband, is where your big brain comes in. Now think of something."

Then, just like that, she got to her feet and continued serving dinner, leaving Alex to ponder for a little while longer.

When he turned to face her again... the memory had already ended.

Alex emerged from the tub, his eyes widened as a figurative light bulb lit over his head.

He had been thinking about things all wrong.

Why the hell was he trying to fight Andre’s son head-on?... Because the Beastmen advocated for direct combat?

Indeed, that was necessary but that didn’t mean he had to trade blows with the Beastman.

It wasn’t that he hadn’t thought of this, but he had considered that even if he tried to tire out his opponent, which was close to impossible, he wouldn’t still have the means to finish off the fight as any attacks on Andre’s son would only cause damage to himself.

But what if there was a way to damage the opponent as long as he got an opening?

His mind immediately drew back to his first meeting with Elizabeth from Krobridge.

Hadn’t he performed a peculiar attack then?... Sure, it had ended with terrible injuries and another attempt now would surely cause more, but as long as he restricted the attack to only one shot, Alex believed he stood a chance.

With that thought in mind, he quickly began to formulate a plan.

It was exactly a day later when Alex reentered the workshop to find Douglas deep in training, almost done creating his first rune.

After the last incident, it had taken quite some time for the hybrid to reorient himself to try again.

Alex said nothing, watching as Douglas completed the process before finally speaking up.

"Congratulations."

Douglas, startled at the sudden remark, quickly recovered as he replied. "Thank you."

"Is Andre not watching over you?"

"No," Douglas replied while shaking his head before adding. "He went out to receive the Rey and his party. It would seem the battle with the Supreme Order has finally ended."

"As expected. Anyway, I’m here to accept his challenge. Would you like to come along to meet him?"

"About that... Is this really right?... I don’t doubt your strength, Alex but this... this isn’t a clash of Abilities or Powers. This is a plain old slugfest, yet, you still want to do this?"

"Would you rather I not?" Alex calmly inquired.

"We could figure out another way. It’s much better than risking getting pummeled by an erratic Beastman."

Alex chuckled before replying. "I already considered that. I’m not the type to accept something with no chance of winning."

"Alex, you would lose." Douglas worriedly remarked.

Shaking his head, Alex responded. "Nah, I’d win."

Before Douglas could say more, the door to the workshop flung open and Andre stepped in, his large figure almost blocking the entrance.

"You are here." He remarked, his boisterous voice booming in the workshop.

"Indeed I am," Alex replied.

"Does that mean you are ready to fight?"

"But of course. So tell me, when do we start?"
