Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 384: The importance of memories
Chapter 384: The importance of memories
Alex awoke to find himself back in Elena’s quarters though he was no longer seated in a chair and was instead laying on the bed with a wet towel over his head.
Blinking a few times, he tried to make sense of what was happening but found himself alone in the room.
He massaged his temples as he recalled his conversation with Nyx.
It had been aggravating, to say the least, but it helped to let him know that he had made the right choice in not allowing his entire life to be controlled by Them.
Unfortunately, he paid a steep price to learn this as he closed his eyes, realizing that Nyx had indeed kept to Their word about erasing his memories.
His memories of high school from the first day to the last were gone, with nary a sign that they ever once existed.
All he knew now was that he had gone to high school and graduated at some point.
Letting out a sigh, he thought to get out of bed but found himself too exhausted to do so and so, ended up falling back on the bed, his eyes zeroing in on the ceiling above.
He wished to think but was unable to, wished to speak but couldn’t form the words and so, he just lay there, in silence.
Then the door opened and Elena walked in.
"You are awake." She remarked excitedly.
Alex nodded as he inquired. "I’m guessing I’ve been out for a while."
"You’ve been asleep for two days. You had everyone worried."
"I apologize."
"It’s fine, I’m glad to see you are okay. I’ll tell the others."
"Uhmm, Elena," Alex called out as she turned to leave.
"Yes?"
"You can tell them but I’d rather not see anyone right now."
"Oh... are you not feeling well?"
Alex managed a weak smile as he assured her. "I’m fine, I just need some time to myself."
"... Alright, I’ll let the others know."
"Appreciate it."
With that Elena stepped out of the room, forgetting to pick up the towel she initially came in to change.
Alex set the towel aside and with a snap, disappeared from her quarters, seeking comfort in the solace of his own.

It took another full day before Alex emerged from his place of solitude, his mood recovered albeit with an added sense of vigilance.
He couldn’t allow what happened the last time to happen again with Nyx’s threat still hanging over his head.
Nyx was well aware of what connected him to Earth and so if those memories were erased, it would be the same as ensuring Alex never left Eventide even with the completion of his mission.
With that in mind, Alex left his residence, making his way to the underground city in Thebes where Arwen, Nadia, and Elena were gathered, studying their Powers.
"Alex!" Arwen exclaimed excitedly, rushing over to embrace him.
"I was so worried." She muttered as she buried her face in his chest.
Feeling warm inside, Alex replied. "I apologize for that. Glad to see you are alright."
"It’s all thanks to you. You know, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a Mystic not contracted to Xistora, that was capable of utilizing their Domains when in the DreamWorld. I guess miracles just happen whenever you’re around."
"I guess so," Alex muttered, trying his hardest not to think about the repercussions of that act.
Nadia walked up to him, meeting his gaze before calmly remarking. "I’m happy you are safe."
Alex managed a smile as he replied. "Same here."
He couldn’t help but feel like it had been a while since they’d had a decent conversation.
"How have you been?" He inquired almost instinctively.
Nadia managed a smile of her own, albeit with a touch of lethargy as she replied. "Good... I think. I need your help with something very important."
"Oh, what’s that?"
"That... perhaps another time, in a more private setting."
Alex raised a brow but ultimately agreed, nodding as he replied. "Alright then."
Meanwhile, Elena remained silent at the side, feeling it inappropriate to say anything as she still considered herself a stranger in their midst.
Alex glanced at her. "Your dream was as incredible as it was dangerous, Elena."
"That..."
"I’m not blaming you for anything. There are several things to mention but the main thing is that we saw who you wanted us to see. There are several questions I wish to ask but right now, I’d like to speak to the Princess. Is she with us?"
Elena hesitated, taking her time to look around before nodding.
"Good. I have a question, Princess. Is your lover prince with you in that place in between dimensions or is he nowhere to be found for I believe I might have an idea of who the Traveler from the North is."
Silence persisted for a brief moment before a voice was heard, one that came from Elena but with a different tone and demeanor attached.
"I know of his absence from where I and my people are straddled."
"Then..."
"But you tell me this; Mystics are known to live for only 120 years and he was 36 when the accident happened. Even if he survived by some stroke of luck, how would he have managed to stick around for more than a thousand years?... I refuse to believe that this Emperor Enoch you speak of is the man I loved."
"You said it yourself, Ashtyx is an aspect of God. What if he found a way to make himself immortal with it?"
"My man was several things but smarter than me was one thing he was not. If I couldn’t figure it out in this place, he wouldn’t stand a chance of doing so as well."
The confidence in her voice caused Alex to let out a sigh.
However, she was not done as she remarked. "However... Perhaps Emperor Enoch has some connections to him. After what you said the other day, I came to a realization... no one else recalls that there was once a Prince alongside their brilliant princess."
"The more we assume, the more questions arise. What I can be sure of right now is that you are important to whomever is the face behind the Crown and I plan to use that to my advantage. Any complaints?"
"None at all. However, I have a request."
"And that is?"
"There is a locket in this city, Elena would know where it is. Take it with you when you meet with the Emperor. Hopefully, it will prove to be of some help in unraveling this tapestry of mysteries."
