Chapter 381: Boiling pot of mysteries

"That’s it, that’s the newspaper. Just look at it, it’s his image on the front page." Elena remarked confidently while pointing at the paper in Alex’s hand.

Alex glanced at Ana who, out of confusion, moved forward and took the paper from Alex’s grasp to peruse the front’s contents.

Seconds passed before Ana raised her head to meet Elena’s gaze. "... I can’t see anything. It’s only the likeness of the Emperor that’s printed here."

"That..."

Victoria also stepped forward to check as well before she calmly intoned. "Lady Ana is correct, there is no picture here."

"But... I can see it." Elena muttered softly, her visage masked with confusion as she found herself unable to figure out how she could see something that wasn’t there.

"Elena... are you sure you can see the Emperor’s image in this newspaper?" Alex finally inquired, his calm voice stifling the tension threatening to arise.

"... I don’t know."

Gesturing for Victoria to hand the newspaper over which she quickly did, Alex took it and moved closer to Elena, who instinctively shuffled back.

"Describe what you see." Alex calmly intoned with Elena meeting his gaze.

"You..."

"I have a feeling we are looking at things the wrong way. It’s not that there’s no image, but that we can’t see it."

Ana nodded. "I think so too, but why is that?"

"I agree with Lady Ana’s question. Why can she see something we can’t?" Victoria added from the side.

At this point, both Arwen and Nadia moved closer to support Elena who was struggling while also curious to figure out what exactly was happening.

"Perhaps it has to do with her origin... but we can’t be sure for now. However, I wish to test the theory that we won’t be able to see the Emperor’s image even if Elena tries to draw it for us."

Ana and Victoria exchanged looks before replying at the same time. "Alright then."

It took some time before Elena was able to calm her nerves long enough to try drawing the image of the Emperor she saw in the newspaper.

She was by no means an expert artist but she found herself capable enough to map out the contours of his face and some other basic features.

"Done." She muttered softly before turning to face Alex who was peering over her shoulder.

"I can’t see anything."

"What..."

"Same here," Ana muttered as she picked up the paper to scrutinize it.

The others took turns looking before it fell back before Elena, all echoing the same thing.

No one could see what Elena saw.

"So I’m the only one that knows how the Emperor looks?"

"It would seem that’s the case." Alex calmly muttered, placing a hand on Elena’s shoulder to calm her.

"This means something..." Ana remarked, trailing off as she couldn’t exactly figure out what it meant.

The Emperor had always been an enigmatic figure, a being of mysterious origins that left many unable to fathom his depths no matter how hard they looked.

Perhaps only the Family Heads would have any Intel on that great figure but currently, Ana didn’t think it right to meet with them.

"So what now?" Nadia inquired, her voice echoing in the silent library.

"Maybe we could try returning to Thebes to search for more clues," Arwen suggested.

"I don’t think that would be necessary," Alex said before tapping Elena’s shoulder to draw her attention.

"You said you saw the Emperor in a dream, correct?"

Elena hesitated but ultimately nodded as she explained. "I can’t be sure if that was truly the Emperor but..."

"He looked the same as the man you just drew."

"Mn."

"Good enough," Alex muttered before glancing at Arwen. "Up for another dream walking?... I know you no longer have any authority over Dreams, but the same items you used the last time should work now, right?"

"Absolutely," Arwen replied excitedly. "I’ll get everything ready."

"Great."

Shifting his attention to Ana, Alex remarked. "Forget about the issue with the Emperor, I’ll handle it. Any luck with finding a suitable Relic?"

"Not yet, but we should find one soon."

"Take your time, let’s not make an error due to haste."

"No problem but... Alex."

"Hmm?"

"Be careful."

Flashing a warm smile, he nodded. "Sure."

With that, he snapped while holding Elena, disappearing in a flash of black and white while Arwen left with Nadia to prepare for the ritual.

Left alone with Victoria who seemed to be pondering a certain matter, Ana sighed. "The situation just keeps getting complicated every step of the way."

Alex had Elena get some rest while he watched over her, worried that the current situation could lead to anomalies.

Thankfully it didn’t with Elena getting some well-deserved rest, especially after the nerve-wracking conversation she’d just had with the others.

"Are you feeling okay?" Alex softly inquired as he sat at the corner of the room.

Elena surprised that he’d watched over her, was unsure how to respond as she stared blankly at him.

"Elena..." Alex called out worriedly, his brows furrowed causing Elena to cough awkwardly as she realized she’d been staring a bit too long for comfort.

"Sorry, I’m alright."

"Are you sure?"

"Mn, just a little lightheaded."

"Understandable. As it is, you are our sole lead on getting more information about the Emperor. It’s a dangerous subject so don’t push yourself so you don’t break down."

"Will do."

"I’m glad you understand. Now tell me, do you recall any aspects of the dream we are about to enter?... Like, any dangers we should be aware of?"

"Well..." Elena trailed off, her brows furrowed for a moment before she replied. "I’m sorry, though I recall seeing the Emperor in my dream, the only other thing I recall seeing is a bright light."

"Perhaps something or someone is interfering with your recollection of that dream. Though we can’t rule out the fact that your memory of the dream isn’t that good to begin with."

"I guess so but... do you think Emperor Enoch and the Princess share some kind of relationship?... I can’t help but think such a connection to be absurd." Elena muttered, feeling rather perplexed.

Alex pursed his lips as he replied, his tone rather grave. "I have no idea and honestly, I’d rather not uncover this boiling pot of mysteries if I had another option. It’s clearly linked to something dangerous, but... I don’t have a choice. Ashtyx is underneath the capital and without figuring out how to keep Emperor Enoch off our trail, we would only be walking to our deaths based on what I felt that day."
