Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 369: A graceful retreat
Chapter 369: A graceful retreat
It was shaping up to be an intriguing story, one that despite the earlier plot hole, had managed to recover well enough to once again move towards a beautiful ending.
Unfortunately, despite her best efforts to transform the plot hole into a plot twist, Ana found herself once again forced to wrack her brains as she discovered yet another anomaly.
An Undead Wheel Mystic.
She had already discovered this anomaly before but hadn’t expected her to be a Ghoul.
The problem with Undead Wheel Mystics was they were already dead which made it quite difficult to kill them again.
Also, since they were already dead, the workings of fate no longer affected them which meant Ana’s Innate Talent, Weaver of Fate, was ineffective in putting the Ghoul in a disadvantageous position.
Letting out a sigh, she decided to focus on helping Victoria by bolstering her luck as best she could only to instantly freeze as she felt a terrifying yet familiar presence from a faraway place.

A black and white conflagration covered almost half of Cance as Victoria tried to keep the Weeping Lady at bay.
Despite her best efforts, her body was covered in injuries and her clothes were torn in different locations, courtesy of the Ghoul’s unrelenting attacks.
Even with Embers, all Victoria managed to do was reduce the scope of the Weeping Lady’s abilities.
Now she understood the popular saying, ’Never fight an Undead Wheel Mystic in their home’.
She would have already died a million times over if not for drawing from the Dark Lord’s grace.
Unfortunately, even that advantage was slowly being corroded as the Weeping Lady slowly but surely adapted to the effects of Embers, her ghostly aura once again retaking most of Cance.
Just then, the Weeping Lady rushed forward, acting more like a barbarian than a lady, causing Victoria to immediately put up her guard, intending to summon Spirits to her aid only for the Ghoul to suddenly disappear.
Then she appeared beside her the next instant and though Victoria reacted quickly enough, she still ended up on the ground, her nose broken from an otherwise aggressive strike.
She sought to teleport but the Weeping Lady’s ghostly aura finally devoured the rest of the Embers, once again taking its place as the dominant force in Cance.
As the Weeping Lady opened her mouth and screeched, Victoria felt her pneuma depart from her body at a rapid pace, clearly being absorbed by the Ghoul.
However, before the Weeping Lady could relish in her victory snack, a faint snap was heard, and following that, a beam of black and white light rushed forward with the intent of meting out judgment.
It struck the Weeping Lady, sending her flying away from Victoria’s defeated figure.
Victoria made an effort to glance at the origin of the attack to find Alex slowly approaching, his usually calm expression now marred with a slight hint of worry.
"Master..." She called out hoarsely.
Alex approached her and upon meeting her gaze, remarked. "You did well. Now you can rest."
With those words, he snapped again, utilizing Blessings of the Moon, to heal Victoria of most of her injuries.
Then, he shifted his attention to the Weeping Lady who had already recovered from the purifying beam.
If she were truly evil, it would have done more than act as a concussive force but regardless, he hadn’t planned to kill her.
"You..." the Weeping Lady muttered, her voice sounding like a broken gramophone to Alex.
"Yes, me."
"What did you do?"
"Nothing that can’t be undone. I already have what I came here for and a bit extra courtesy of the Mouthpiece or should I say, Adelia. Anyway, I’m willing to step away now. We no longer have a reason to fight."
"You come to my city, disrupt the peace, keep us from finishing the dust people and now you say this?... Do you think I wouldn’t kill you right where you stand!"
Alex remained unmoved as he replied. "We can fight. But I promise you that if we do, this city and the people in those pods will suffer for it."
The Weeping Lady glared at him. "You would dare threaten me with the people of Cance?"
"Adelia said it, didn’t she?... If we fight, Cance will be destroyed. You can’t afford that."
"And you can?"
"I am not the one with loyalty to the Crown," Alex said matter of factly.
"..."
"The Eastern Highlands are preparing for war and the other Kingdoms of Ra’as might be greedy for profit. Stand down and we can end this here."
"Fine then. But know this, Alexander Regulus, I will not forget what you’ve done here tonight. The Supreme Order will make sure you and your subordinates suffer for what you did here today."
"And I will not suffer you to not carry out such an act. But I will say this as well, stand in my way and I won’t hesitate to destroy you."
The Weeping Lady stared at Alex, realizing that the man before her was not joking.
Letting out a sigh, Alex picked up Victoria’s unconscious body and remarked. "However, it is true that my actions tonight may have been a tad bit much so how about this?... My research is pointed towards creating a cure for Blight or at least, a way to prevent it from getting worse. If I complete the research, I’d be more than happy to hand it over directly to Farfouth. Take it as an apology."
The Weeping Lady regarded Alex, unsure of what to make of his proposal.
Any other would have laughed in his face, saying that he was spouting rubbish, after all, what was the Blight?... It was a death sentence.
But she knew because she had seen his writings.
For some reason, she felt he might be able to get the job done and so, after much silence, she nodded.
"Fine then, but that doesn’t resolve everything. The girl... hand her over."
"What girl?" Alex raised a brow.
"Don’t play dumb, the girl. The last of the dust people. You cannot keep protecting her. Call off the Beastmen."
Alex remained silent for a moment before ultimately shrugging. "What makes you think I had anything to do with Aragon’s rebellion?"
"What?"
"If you want the girl, go for her, I don’t plan on stopping you from getting to her."
"You..."
"I cannot say the same for Aragon however. Anyway, goodbye."
Without waiting for a response, Alex snapped and disappeared in a flash of black and white.
