Chapter 367: Light Stealers
Chapter 367: Light Stealers
Even though she tried to focus her attention on other matters, Adelia found herself returning to the feeling of Deja Vu plaguing her senses.
It felt like everything that was currently happening had happened before, leaving her questioning why that was the case.
Frowning deeply, she tried to dig into her memories to find something that would help deal with the feeling but despite her best efforts, she pulled up repeated blanks.
Unable to restrain herself any longer, she sought help from her brother. "Ezra, don’t you think something is odd about this?
"Odd, you say?" Ezra intoned, his brow raised as he regarded his sister with interest.
"Yes. Like everything that’s happening now has happened before."
"I believe that’s referred to as Deja Vu and to my knowledge, it’s not something that occurs to a crowd at a time."
"No, I... but what if it’s not?" Adelia pushed, unwilling to just drop the matter like that.
Ezra flashed a warm smile as he inquired. "Alright then. Would you like me to cleanse the entire area?... As we both know, no spell can withstand the glory of the sky."
"... If you would be kind enough to do so," Adelia replied after a brief hesitation.
Ezra nodded and scanning the area for a bit, decided to move to an adjacent hall so as not to disturb the peace of the event.
Once in that room, he first activated his spirituality before immediately transforming, taking on the form of the regal gryphon, his towering figure comparable to that of a matured elephant.
As his eyes grew sharp, a miniature Lightbringer emerged above his head and immediately, a solar flare erupted, covering the entirety of the hall in a golden light.
Naturally, those who were Mystics noticed the ripples in the aether but judging by how it held no killing intent, they allowed it to pass without retaliation.
Once the solar flare died down, Ezra returned to his human form and deactivated his spirituality before returning to the main hall to meet with Adelia who still seemed bothered for some reason.
"Anything?" She quickly inquired once he had reached her side.
Ezra shook his head. "None. How about we go talk to the guests?... I have a feeling your Deja Vu is born from the fact that you’ve always dreamt of such a day but it ended up coming quicker than you expected."
"Ezra, I don’t..."
"Calm yourself, Adelia. Today is a great day, let’s try to enjoy it."
Seeing as Ezra wished for her to drop the matter, Adelia had no choice but to do so to avoid upsetting him.
"Alright. I’m sorry."
"It’s no problem. Come, how about we mingle with the guests."
"You go ahead."
"Bah, come along and stop being such a spoilsport."
Not giving Adelia a chance to respond, he pulled her along to meet with a few friends.
***
The conversation was... unexpectedly quite interesting.
Contrary to expectations, Adelia realized that perhaps it was just nervousness that caused her the incredible discomfort she felt.
Though the Deja Vu remained, it wasn’t as pronounced and so, she was quick to put it out of her mind.
With the homage payment finally completed, they immediately moved on to the next part.
The Procession.
This portion involved Ezra and Adelia entering a tunnel and making their way toward the resting place of the Glory of the Empire.
Once there, they would be baptized in its light and begin their journey as scions of the Empire with one serving the Crown directly while the other would become leader of the Supreme Order.
They put on black hoods and porcelain masks and after being handed a candlestick with a lit candle on it as well as a map, were sent on their way.
***
The journey through the tunnels was to remind them of the experiences of their Razan ancestors.
It reminded them of the pain, the suffering, and all that the Night Kindred wrought upon mankind due to their weakness.
It reminded them of the essentiality of the Empire and why it had to persist forever.
Without it, it wouldn’t be long before Ra’as would be forced into a losing war with the Night Kindred again.
So for the sake of every member of the Empire, for the sake of every citizen, they could not falter in their tasks.
They had to remain steadfast and resolute, carrying everything out to ensure an undying land.
This was why even as the pathway became treacherous, they did not waver.
Even as they came upon certain creatures that had made their home in these tunnels, they did not stop and even marched on with increased fervor.
But as they made their way through, Adelia couldn’t shake off the vague feeling that they were being followed.
Many a time, she turned back and utilized her now active spirituality to inspect but found nothing of note causing her to grow even more anxious.
If there was truly something out there... just what could it be?
Ezra assured her there was no problem and to put her mind at ease, fell to the back while she continued in front.
Like that, both siblings soon arrived in an incredibly large cave filled with stalagmites and stalactites which seemed to glow with a faint blue light.
At the end of the cave was a great door, one that seemed to be made of gold and a peculiar black stone and covered with anti-magic sigils, clearly the handiwork of the Great Families since they were the most adept at making such sigils in the Empire.
They walked through the cave at a steady pace to avoid getting caught off guard by the entrapment of some foul creature since it was said that the cave was a favorite resting place for such things.
And as expected, once they arrived at the midpoint of the cavern, they emerged.
They looked human at first glance but a closer look would reveal an anomaly, one born out of their innate structure.
A gaping hole was where their heart should have been, their facial features were incomplete and their bodies too spindly to be considered equipped with bones.
"Light Stealers," Ezra muttered coldly, his gaze sweeping across every single one.
"Brother..." Adelia suddenly called out in a muffled tone, drawing his attention to yet another of the Light Stealers.
But there was a difference... This one was hardly humanoid, taking on aspects of other creatures that would have most likely been denizens of the tunnels leading to the cavern at some point.
Ezra’s expression cooled further.
