Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 360: Meeting hall
Chapter 360: Meeting hall
It was close to midnight when Alex arrived at the designated spot with a bag over his shoulder.
He’d taken the liberty to head back home to grab a few things before coming out here.
Ensuring the carriage driver left, Alex found a place nearby and opened the bag, pulling out its contents which consisted of a black cloak and a white mask with strange engravings on it.
Once he had donned the peculiar outfit, he began his walk through the so-called Love Garden.
It was more akin to a forest than a garden, what with the slightly tall trees and incredible greenery, though with a much lesser radius.
A few classes took place around this area, including but not limited to botany, wildlife studies, and the like but those classes were held at the periphery.
Heading inward was forbidden and those that dared to break that rule always ended up getting caught before they could stray too far.
Alex guessed the reason they’d all been quickly caught had something to do with the green mist that was even thicker around the area.
His spirituality active, he didn’t miss the slightly increased density of aether in the Garden compared to other parts of the school, at least those he had been to.
He walked briskly, his hands in his pockets as he tried to brush off the unnatural chill caressing his skin.
Soon, he arrived at the periphery that none were meant to pass.
Scanning the area, he saw nothing apart from the green mist and so, decided to cross the line.
A single step however and rustling was heard from the bushes.
The next moment, two people revealed themselves.
Judging from their body structure that was mostly obscured by the black hooded cloak they wore, Alex deduced the one on the right to be male and the one on the left to be female.
"Lucius Fitzgerald?" The man inquired, his voice sounding off for some reason.
Alex nodded. "And you?"
"Where is your invitation?"
Producing it from his pocket, the woman took it and scrutinized it for a moment before nodding at the man.
"Come with us."
With that, Alex was led the rest of the way into the Garden, crossing stranger, more twisted parts that made it look like a jungle.
They soon arrived before a dilapidated building.
Judging from its structure, it seemed to have been built at the same time as the rest of the school buildings currently in use though judging from how it looked, it had been abandoned for who knows how long.
"Go in." The man remarked with Alex feigning hesitation before finally obliging, making his way into the dilapidated building now reclaimed by nature.
The building was covered in vines and creeping moss with some critters having moved in as well.
Alex paid the tiny animals no need as he approached the podium where a full-body mirror was waiting for him.
Pursing his lips, he quickly guessed that the mirror was the entrance to where the cult would be having their meeting.
He glanced back to find the two hooded figures that escorted him into the building, watching him closely.
Paying them no mind, he shifted his attention back to the mirror as he quickly sifted through everything they’d taken from Lucius’s memories.
Soon, he happened upon it.
It was a group of three sentences that served as the password and so without hesitation, he began.
"O beautiful lady of the night.
"She who lurks in the shadows to protect the light.
"I seek an audience."
With those words, the aether rippled in response before the mirror undulated like a body of water, revealing a hall made with pure white alabaster on the other side.
Alex reached his hand in and watched as it passed through the aqueous surface before he moved with his whole body, passing through the mirror.
The world went dark for a moment and then, he found himself standing in the midst of the hall he’d seen in the mirror before entry.
Emerald flames danced about in mid-air, Illuminating the area though instead of heat, they radiated an unnatural chill that affected one’s pneuma, leaving the Soma unaffected.
Alex remained calm as he made his way down the hall, noting how behind the great pillars that stood tall, holding up the edifice, were ink-black shadows that seemed to be alive.
A pair of eyes seemed to watch from within them, causing Alex to involuntarily tense up before calming himself.
He soon arrived at a great door that flung open, revealing yet another hall that was built using cleanly hewn brownstones.
The hall was decorated with large statues of different personas that existed throughout the history of the empire.
Alex guessed that these statues could have been representations of the previous leaders of the Supreme Order though judging by the number of statues, it didn’t seem to be the case.
Regardless, he found that underneath each statue was what looked like an elevator without doors.
Green flame tongues danced at the center of these doorless elevators, casting an eerie glow that made Alex wonder what they were for.
Just as he got to the middle line, however, he quickly realized their use.
The flames began to explode without warning, enveloping the doorless elevators after which a figure in a black hooded cloak with a white porcelain mask would appear.
Alex watched this happen a few times, counting as almost 50 people emerged in three minutes.
He was indeed correct.
The Order had a means to quickly summon its followers.
Taking a moment to compose himself, he continued down the path, this time in the company of the Order members.
They arrived at the door which flung open on its own, revealing a grand hall that looked like a coliseum.
Above, green flame tongues gathered in a most breathtaking form, casting a green eerie glow on the entire edifice which seemed wide enough to fit at least 200 people easily with the insignia of a fenced house at the center.
