Chapter 334: A gamble

It was a gamble, one that if wrong could have led to unsavory consequences.

The Ability utilized by Alex to help him perfectly embody the person that was once Lucius was something he was able to create only because Adam was nice enough to agree to his request.

Simply named Dark Transformation, Alex gained inspiration for the Ability from whatever Nyx had done to allow him to keep his original appearance while others saw him as the dead Alex.

Of course, his worked differently as instead of just a vague illusion, Alex sought to embody the person he wished to impersonate for the sole worry that just like how people were able to see through the essence of Nyx’s trickery, they would be able to see through his, after all, would his attempt be any better than the godlike being that was Nyx?

He thought not.

Regardless, the fact that the Mouthpiece, as Lucius and Lord Fitzgerald referred to the woman in the mirror, had ended up falling for the trickery was enough to let Alex know that his work wasn’t a waste.

However, he wasn’t completely out of the water yet and so, didn’t dare to act out in any way unbefitting of the man once known as Lucius.

As expected, a few seconds passed before the lady in the mirror spoke again.

"Second question, everything you mentioned to Fitzgerald, from the betrayal of the Beastmen to the workings of a new organization behind the scenes... are they true?"

Silence reigned yet again but Alex didn’t take too long as he knew overdoing things might be suspicious.

So letting out a sigh, he nodded in response.

"Speak!"

"... Yes, Mouthpiece. Everything I said was true."

"... You speak yet another truth."

Alex dared a peek at the lady’s image as he remarked. "I wouldn’t dare lie."

A snort escaped from the mirror, but surprisingly, it was hardly made in disapproval.

Was this a good sign?... It remained to be seen.

Then the third question soon arrived.

"You were caught by the secret organization backing Aragon." She began almost like she’d always known, a facade Alex wasn’t about to accept as the truth.

Taking a moment to see if Alex would react, she continued. "How did you escape their clutches?"

The silence that followed was resounding as the winds grew stronger and the green flames burned brighter.

Almost instantaneously, Alex got the vague thought that a single misstep at this point would result in a most gruesome death.

Even Lord Fitzgerald who had remained unaffected by the environmental ambiance was forced to tremble in the face of such a wanton display of might.

"I’m listening." The woman remarked, her tone though placid, clearly carrying an undertone that suggested anger or rather, annoyance.

Regardless, Alex kept his cool and after rehearsing the answer a few times in his head, he replied. "I didn’t."

"They let me go. I was half dead at the time, their methods were... horrifying to say the least. I spat out everything I knew without hesitation and even then, I was left for dead. It was the benefactor that I came back with that found me and nursed me back to health. For saving me, I promised to ensure she would get her dues."

"... No lies." The lady in the mirror, despite her attempts to show no emotion, was taken aback by Alex’s blunt ’honesty’.

He’d answered, though with some hesitation at first, without hiding a single detail.

Then just as quickly as she lost her cool, she regained it as she remarked. "You shared the secrets of the Order. I find you deserving of death. Do you have any last words?"

As she spoke, killing intent flooded the room and swarmed Alex like a deluge, intent on drowning him the moment he got out of line.

Gulping nervously, Alex slowly replied as he raised his head to regard the blurry face of the woman. "...I do, Mouthpiece."

"Then say it."

"I have no secrets to give so why should I be punished when I didn’t share anything."

"What?"

"The reason you chose me as proxy and the reason you chose those behind me, wasn’t because we were special or because we knew much, on the contrary, we know nothing. What would the enemy get after picking through my brains?... Some coordinates?... I mean, I don’t even know where the meeting hall is, hell, I haven’t seen your face, so what important information can be gotten from a nobody like me?... It would be somewhat reasonable if they wish to come after... father, but even then, he is protected by his strength and that of the Order, so, I can’t help but wonder, how exactly have I betrayed the Order secrets?"

He spoke boldly and quickly, leaving no stone unturned as he tried to ensure that the essence of his argument was seen through properly.

There was a chance of offense but Alex didn’t consider it much.

When a man, one who cared for his life so much that he was willing to risk returning to Origin for a chance at survival, found out that he was about to die, would he care enough to try to control his tongue?

It was doubtful.

So, even after his ’speech’, Alex continued staring, his chest heaving to give off the impression that he had spoken, solely driven by his emotions and an incredible will to live.

Silence ensued as Lord Fitzgerald stared at Alex, unsure of what to make of the young man’s words.

They were, though quite bold, essentially valid considering the structure of their organization.

Proxies were never meant to be important chess pieces as it would be detrimental should Aragon ever choose to go against the agreement with the Order as they had done now.

It was an aspect that, despite being told repeatedly that he was sent because he was special, Lucius was able to grasp.

Soon enough, Alex ’calmed down’, and acting as though he’d realized his mistake, he kowtowed before the mirror.

"Forgive me, Mouthpiece, I spoke out of turn."
