Chapter 332: Come with me

Pulled by Lord Fitzgerald to an unknown destination, Alex was quick to notice the change in demeanor, which once relaxed now carried an underlying sense of urgency as he hurried down the hallway.

Alex looked back a few times, displaying a nervous facade, an act that was caught by Lord Fitzgerald though he made no attempt to mention it.

Soon, they arrived before a door and on opening it, Alex found himself in what looked to be a private room for study with a fireplace at one end and two couches with a wooden table between.

Before he could get a chance to inspect the room further having already stepped in, Alex heard the door lock causing him to turn just in time to watch Fitzgerald close the distance and in an instant, tore off Alex’s right sleeve.

At the same time, Alex noticed the color of Fitzgerald’s eyes change for a moment, flickering a faint gold before returning to the normal brown.

’He turned on his spirituality.’ Alex thought to himself as Fitzgerald scrutinized his left arm.

Feigning confusion, Alex inquired. "Is something wrong, father?"

"Shut up!" Came the response as Fitzgerald shifted his attention from the arm to pull up Alex’s shirt, revealing his toned abs.

Fitzgerald gazed upon it for a few seconds before pulling it down to finally face Alex.

"Who are you?"

"Lucius."

"Lies!"

"I am not lying."

"Silence!" Fitzgerald bellowed, his eyes flickering once again with emotion as he struggled to keep them in check.

Turning away from Alex, he muttered. "How much information did you provide them with?"

"That..."

"Do not lie to me, boy!"

"... As much as I know."

Silence persisted as Fitzgerald let Alex’s words sink in before he let out a regretful sigh.

"You shouldn’t have come back. The Mouthpiece would have your head if she finds out about this."

"Where would I go if I don’t return?"

"..."

"This is my home. I didn’t know who else to turn to. Please Father, you are high enough in the Order, you have to help me."

"What would you have me do!?" Fitzgerald questioned aggressively as he turned to face Alex. "Do you wish for me to go against the Order?... To protect you despite what you did?"

"Please father..." Alex trailed off as he dropped to his knees, his head hung low in shame. "I have nowhere else to go."

"... I cannot help you." Lord Fitzgerald said as he turned his face away. "As you have made your bed, so shall you lie on it."

"... No."

Accompanied by the butler Fenwick, Victoria slowly made her way back through the hallway she and Alex had passed through on their way to the garden.

Unlike before however, the stench of killing intent was potent in the air, a development that wasn’t out of her expectations.

The walk was mostly silent with Butler Fenwick scrutinizing her just as much as she did to him.

Time seemed to stretch as seconds turned to minutes and soon... "What Cryptid?" Victoria inquired.

"Hmm?"

"What Cryptid did you imbibe to get so fast?"

Butler Fenwick glanced at her side profile, noting her genuinely curious expression.

"Fox." Came the response after some thought.

"Intriguing. I didn’t know Fox parts still existed."

"They don’t as far as I’m aware, however, the bones of a Monster Wheel Mystic that imbibed a similar potion and reached a high enough level would suffice for usage." Fenwick casually explained.

"I see. You are quite lucky."

"Indeed I am, My master spares no expenses in ensuring those closest to him are strong enough to protect him."

"A worthy investment. Of course, it isn’t always wise to believe that strength would save a life."

"Oh?"

Suddenly, Victoria stopped and turned to face Fenwick with the latter’s eyes glowing a faint gold as he immediately took a stance, intent on defending or attacking depending on Victoria’s actions.

Naturally, Victoria did nothing as she remarked. "Sometimes, it is better to make another ally than to have one more enemy. Inform your master I shall be taking my leave. If he wishes to contact me, send Lucius, he would know where I am."

"Hmm." Fenwick furrowed his brows, watching as Victoria continued on her way down the hallway with not even a trace of killing intent leaking from her slender figure.

Soon after Victoria turned a corner, disappearing from his sight, a cloaked man emerged from behind a pillar and inquired. "Do we go after her?"

Fenwick pursed his lips, pondering for a moment before ultimately shaking his head. "No, let her go. She is right, antagonizing her unnecessarily might lead to unsavory consequences."

Fitzgerald stood silently, revealing his back to a kneeling Alex as he delved deep into his thoughts.

As he tried to convince himself that there was no way to save Lucius from the punishment that would surely be meted out by the Order, Alex spoke up, his previously subdued tone now filled with a fire, one fueled by a desire to not give up.

"I want to meet the Mouthpiece."

Fitzgerald stiffened before turning to face Alex, noting the expression he held.

"Do you know what you are saying?"

"Would you rather I forfeit my life just like that, father?... You were the one that taught me methods to preserve my life, I’d rather make use of those lessons now."

Fitzgerald bit down on his lower lip as he didn’t miss the manner in which Alex spoke.

The same boy he had raised to his current state who once regarded him with awe and respect now held disappointment in those same eyes.

He’d failed him and he knew it.

Letting out a heavy sigh, Lord Fitzgerald replied. "Wait here."

With that, he turned and left the room, leaving Alex to let out a sigh of relief.

Of course he didn’t dare to act out of character as he remained in his kneeling position, waiting patiently for Lord Fitzgerald to return.

In the meantime, he reached out to his connection with Victoria to see if she was fine, thankfully, she was.

With that sorted, he busied himself running numbers through his head, worried that there might be some means to peer into his thoughts which could potentially out him as an imposter.

Minutes passed and after more than an hour, Lord Fitzgerald returned, his expression solemn. "Come with me."
