Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 317: He was...

Chapter 317: He was...

It started as an experiment.

Having been thrown out of the Devil Wheel, Arwen was placed in a situation where she had to learn from scratch.

Starting from the meaning of her domain to its wide range of capabilities.

Thankfully she had Nadia to guide her and her studies as well but even then, she’d only managed to find a way to exert her will on the world without requiring a gesture.

Her first attempt... was what led to the conflagration currently rampaging through the buildings in the city underneath Thebes.

Perhaps due to how it arose, Arwen was unable to compose herself, leaving her stunned as she watched the flames dance in a certain rhythm.

"... What have I done?" She muttered, already expecting the scene of watching the buildings that carried so much history, degrading as a result of her flames.

Of course, her worries were unfounded as Nadia commented behind her. "Can you stop that?... It’s clear to see it’s not destroying anything, so give it a rest."

"..." Arwen stayed silent as she regained her composure long enough to realize that Nadia was indeed correct.

The pale flames did nothing to the buildings apart from covering them in its gray light, a scene which brought endless relief to Arwen.

Coughing awkwardly, Arwen glanced at Nadia who rolled her eyes in response.

"You can be such a drama queen at times."

"... Sorry."

"Hah, it’s fine. I won’t lie, I was also slightly worried but from this, we can make out two things; one, your flames have a rather wide range and as long as nothing impedes them, they can keep going..."

"Secondly, they don’t affect non-living things." Arwen finished as she clapped her hands, dousing the flames on them while at the same time causing the gray flames devouring the buildings to abate.

Taking out a diary as well as a feather quill and ink, she quickly documented the findings, taking the time to go through the four facts that had been deduced from their experiments so far.

Number one on the list was, ’Has no heat’ while two was, ’Isn’t affected by water neither does it work on water.’, both of which were written in Enochic.

Nodding in satisfaction, Arwen closed the diary and turned to find Nadia prepping for her experiment.

Unlike her, Nadia was still a Devil Wheel Mystic, though her condition was quite peculiar.

Regardless, the main rules still applied like how they needed to utter spells to Materialize.

Nadia took a deep breath, seeking to calm her nervous mind, before stretching out her right hand with her palm open and her eyes fixated on the buildings ahead.

Then in a soft yet intentional tone, she intoned.

Denyen

A red haze erupted, using her figure as the focal point as it spread out like a curtain, quickly streaking past the buildings in her vision and with that, everything changed.

The buildings, the roads... the entire scenery shifted, revealing a place all too familiar to Nadia while being foreign to Arwen.

"... Where is this?" Arwen inquired as she found herself mesmerized by the scene that looked incredibly realistic, causing her to feel like she’d been transported to a different location.

Unfortunately for her, Nadia heard nothing she said, completely entranced by the sight before her.

The familiar streets she’d traveled by carriage, the pedestrians that always seemed to be in a hurry, the Royal Blues guarding corners...

It was BoneHaven... the city that gave her as much as it took away.

As the carriages rode past, Nadia found herself searching for someone... and just like clockwork, he appeared.

He looked nothing like the upper-class gentleman she knew now.

No... he wore simple clothes, walking in a certain manner that was neither too fast nor too slow, the cool and calm demeanor that served as a cloak to the quirky man underneath... it was just like she remembered.

He walked towards her and Nadia instinctively moved as well.

She took one step, and then another, and then... as she opened her arms to hug the young man, he went past her before dissipating into red mist.

Nadia remained in place, her arms wrapped around her body as she trembled incessantly, her head down as she shut her eyes.

Arwen watched everything in silence, unsure of what to make of it all.

A few seconds passed before she slowly approached Nadia who seemed unable to recover from what she’d seen.

On getting within arm’s length, Arwen reached out and touched her shoulder, an act which immediately brought an end to Nadia’s quivering.

Then ever so slowly, Nadia turned to face Arwen, her eyes reddened like she’d been crying.

"Are you alright?" Arwen softly inquired.

Sniffling, Nadia used the back of her left palm to rub off the tear streaks on her face as she answered. "Of course, why wouldn’t I be?"

"You don’t look so good."

"What would make you think that?" Nadia asked back, causing Arwen to take a different approach.

"... You know, you never did tell me about the person you miss so much. Was it that man?"

"Arwen..."

"He looked so much like Mr. Regulus. Who was he to you?"

"..." Nadia remained silent, her eyes revealing the complicated emotions that gripped her at that moment.

Her lips quivered as she pondered on the answer to give.

Who was Alex to her exactly?... Was he a friend?... A lover?... Or just a man?

Nadia grappled with the notion behind each title before quickly realizing who he was to her.

He was none of those things... and so she parted her lips and in a manner that though hesitant, was meant to reveal the truth in her heart, Nadia intoned. "He was..."

"Can I talk to you both?" A familiar voice broke up the conversation, drawing the attention of Arwen and Nadia who turned to find Elena standing not too far away with a determined expression on her visage.

Silence reigned for a bit before Arwen spoke up. "Is everything okay, Elena?... You look like you have something to say."

"I do," Elena replied.

"Oh, then..."

"I wish to join your organization..."

Taken aback at first by the unexpected news, Arwen revealed an excited smile. "That’s wonderful. I’ll quickly..."

"But before that, I have a condition."

"... What condition?" Nadia inquired, her brows furrowed slightly.

"... I don’t know."

"..." As both stared silently at Elena, the latter shuffled uncomfortably as she awkwardly dropped her head down with the words of Princess Berenice echoing in her ears.

’Kill me.’
