Chapter 305: Isena Thalore

Pa... pa

Alex snapped repeatedly, his body enshrouded in black and white as he covered incredible distances instantly in a bid to get away from what was otherwise a most harrowing encounter with what he could only describe as monstrous creatures.

His breathing labored, he made no attempts to stop as he continually snapped, relying on instincts to forge his path ahead.

It took a while but after more than an hour of snapping incessantly while crossing through ruins, Alex finally arrived at a landmark.

It was a gate large enough to allow a giant pass through, towering over Alex with distinct designs on it that set it out as a rather unique location amongst the ruined city.

It was connected to a great wall that seemed just as high, effectively canceling out the option of scaling it.

Letting out a tired sigh, he couldn’t help but notice that there was something off.

How had relying on his instincts managed to get him here?... As he began to ponder this, Alex noticed something strange about the purple gem he was carrying.

It was almost as though... it was being attracted to something beyond the wall.

This piqued Alex’s interest, causing him to wonder what was beyond.

Of course, his curiosity ended there as he was well aware that searching for his teammates before going further was the best option to make.

Attempting to snap his finger caused him to wince as his fingers felt quite sore.

Clicking his tongue, Alex stretched his palms out a few times in a bid to return feeling to his fingers only to pause as he felt a familiar connection.

Moments later, Ana arrived, her expression filled with joy as she exclaimed. "Alex!"

She rushed at him and promptly tackled him with a hug, squeezing him tightly until Alex could hardly breathe.

"Could you let me go now?... I can’t breathe." Alex pleaded hoarsely with Ana reluctantly obliging.

Once again allowed to use his lungs to full capacity, Alex took a deep breath before inquiring. "Before anything, how did you manage to find me?"

"I didn’t. I found something on my arrival here. Sure, I had to take down an elven priest for it but it was worth it. I might have an idea of what happened to this city and guess what?"

"What?"

"I learnt an elven name, Melandrach. Quite novel sounding, don’t you think?"

"Do you by any chance know what that means?"

"Of course not. The Elven language hasn’t been found talk more of being translated though once we are done here, we could get samples to study." As she spoke, Ana didn’t do well to hide the desire in her eyes to explore.

Perhaps if not for the severity of their situation, she would have already begun to do so.

Alex could only chuckle as he remarked. "I’m sure we’d have enough time to excavate the place once we are done with the mission."

Giving his tacit approval to Ana’s exploration later on, Alex moved on to more important matters like... "So how did you get here?"

"Oh yeah. This got me here." Ana replied, revealing the purple gem she held in her right hand.

"You followed it?"

"It felt like it was being attracted somewhere and though difficult, I noticed that it was intricately linked in a convoluted manner to the state of the city."

"Intricately linked?"

"Don’t ask me how, I am unsure how it works but in any case, it’s by following it that I came here."

Alex nodded thoughtfully, as he pondered on what could be attracting the purple gems from beyond the gate.

The uncanny feeling that something was in the works left him slightly peeved, as the trauma of being led by the nose by another was still difficult to get past.

"What now?" Ana inquired before suggesting. "I could polymorph and try going over the wall."

Alex shook his head. "No, that’s dangerous. We hardly know what’s on the other side to have you going in blind. Let’s wait for now. If the purple gems led us here then perhaps..."

"Master!"

The sudden familiar voice addressing him caused Alex pause before he turned to find Victoria rushing over and kneeling before him.

"I’m glad you are okay, master." Victoria greeted with a bow.

"Nice to see you too, Ara. Tell me, were you led here by a strange purple gem?"

"Hmm." Raising her head to regard Alex, Victoria promptly replied. "Indeed, master. Is it the same for you?"

"Mn. Even Ana was brought here."

"Then we were right to think that someone or something is pulling the strings from the shadows, for reasons unknown. Regardless, if they are hostile or not, it is clear that they broke us apart just to find these gems before then leading us to congregate here." Alejandro said, his booming voice echoing across the landscape.

Alex sighed, massaging his temples as his PTSD left him feeling listless.

Just as he was about to suggest a few plans to adjust to the circumstances, yet another unexpected variable occurred.

Boom

The purple gems they held suddenly began to emit faint light as the gates shook tremendously, eliciting tremors in the land akin to earthquakes.

Alex furrowed his brows as the group of four hurdled together, prepared to make a move either offensively or defensively, depending on the outcome of what was happening.

The gates soon began to give way, revealing a purple-lit grand hall dotted with comically large trees with incredible canopies.

The trees seemed rotten and were covered in what looked like flesh with growths that emitted pus while its branches were entwined by what looked like vines at first but on closer inspection, it revealed that they were better likened to umbilical cords.

The revolting scene left the group disgusted as they stared, unwilling to step in though well aware that what they were after was most likely within the abominable forest.

After some internal struggle, Alex made eye contact with the others before they all moved at the same time, walking at the same place as they entered the forest and began their trek across.

Through it all, the purple gems they held continued to emit a faint glow, serving as a beacon to something that lay within.

After what felt like an eternity but was roughly an hour, they arrived in a throne room emptied of its contents, except for a massive throne made from what was at some point quite impressive wood but was now just a mass of dead wood covered in barbed and fleshy vines.

Of course, what caught their attention wasn’t the throne but the one seated on it.

He donned black metal armor and a helmet covered his face, revealing glowing purple eyes.

Stabbed into the ground at his side was a great spear with the design of a tall tree from which endless radiance was emitted.

All around him, bloodied vines with fleshy patches and eyeballs at the tips wiggled about seemingly inspecting the area before settling on the newcomers.

As Alex exchanged looks with the armored man seated on the throne, the latter remarked in a deep baritone voice that echoed across the hall.

"Welcome travelers. Welcome to Isena Thalore."
