Chapter 301: Elven
Ha...ha
Ana took deep, labored breaths as her eyes darted about, inspecting her surroundings.
Miniature craters dotted the landscape, a testament to the battle that had ended a few seconds prior.
Ensuring her foes were all but vanquished, Ana shifted her attention to her left arm which hung limp at her side with a portion blackened, an unfortunate result of waking up in what was most likely the worst place to do so.
Thankfully, the poison was for paralysis instead of something more potent so was easily taken care of.
Letting out a relieved sigh, she moved her fingers around for a bit before deciding to push on.
Memories of getting flung through some unknown passageway were etched in her mind, leaving her slightly worried about others who had most likely met with a similar fate.
Hopefully, they would be able to handle whatever they were forced to face.
As she trudged through the ruined landscape, the thought to polymorph into her dragon form emerged in her mind once or twice but she decided against it as the terrain was too unpredictable, and allowing herself to be such an easy target would be quite foolish.
Regardless, she focused on searching for the rest which proved to be quite difficult due to the distorted aether flowing underground.
Shaking off her worries, Ana soon paused in her tracks as she found herself standing before a structure that bore the signs of...what did those Angelica people call it?... Ah yes, a cathedral.
Of course, unlike the one built in Ra’as by the church, this one was long past its glory days with most of its structure in a ruined state and covered by moss.
Ana thought to move past the building only to pause as she sensed a life signature within the building.
Hesitating for a moment, she decided to check things out and so, with her will at the ready, she slowly made her way into the building.
Pushing the stone doors open, she found herself within a grand hall, comparable if not much more beautiful than the insides of the Holy Cathedral of the Church of Angelica located in Ra’as.
Reconstructing the church in her mind, Ana guessed its size to be capable of housing at least a hundred thousand people at a time.
Most of the stained windows were destroyed with statues stationed at different corners broken apart with their stumps the only evidence that there was once an art piece in that location.
The few pillars and walls that still stood held murals of a great and powerful civilization that was headed by a powerful goddess with Ana inferring that this was most likely the Elven creation myth.
Surprisingly, despite the destruction wrought upon the church, the altar looked largely untouched and it was at that altar that the person she detected was.
He had his back turned to her and was seated in a wheelchair carved out of wood.
His long and lustrous golden hair was nearly touching the ground and the aura he gave off was quite serene.
Contemplating the next step, Ana took a few steps forward before calling out in Razan."Hello, can you hear me?... If you can, please turn around."
Silence reigned for a moment with no one saying anything and with the silence, Ana couldn’t help but grow uneasy.
Pondering her options, she decided to approach the man only to pause as strange words came from the man.
It was indeed a statement that held meaning but Ana found herself unable to align his words with any living language which she understood to be most likely as a result of the fact that his civilization had long since been destroyed.
Of course, she didn’t give up just yet and so listened closely as the man continued to ramble on in the foreign language, his tone lacking emotion.
It didn’t take long before Ana’s brows furrowed as though the language the man spoke was unfamiliar to her, it did seem to share a few root words with two languages she was familiar with; Razan, which was the indigenous language of Ra’as and Gaia, which was the national language of Aragon, both of which she was quite adept in.
The more she listened, the more it became clear that the languages shared some history.
Of course, even with the similarities in form and structure, Ana still found it difficult to interpret what the person was saying which was quite upsetting as it felt as though he was sharing important information.
At some point, the person’s voice which was without emotions was slowly filled with disdain and annoyance at the forefront.
She kept on listening hoping to glean something, anything that could help her get an idea of what was being said but apart from the change in emotions, little more could be discerned.
From disdain and annoyance, the man’s tone shifted with bitterness and frustration taking center stage.
Just as she was about to give up, the man said something but the end of his statement had come out as utter gibberish to her, carrying no form or structure like the rest of what he’d been saying.
The phenomenon, quite peculiar, drew her mind to an experience she had several years ago.
However, before she could begin digging through her memories to figure out when it happened, the man soldiered on causing her to curse inwardly.
Why was he so adamant to keep talking without even checking to see if the person he was talking to was able to understand what he was saying?
Was he doing it on purpose?... Or... as a certain worrisome thought came to mind, the man suddenly paused, his prior statement filled with a vague sense of triumph though the melancholy underneath was unmistakable.
Immediately growing tense at the eerie silence, Ana was prepared to act only for the man to resume his monologue and with the resumption came yet another change in his voice, this time radiating regret and a deep sense of loss.
