Chapter 284: Surprise attack
Chapter 284: Surprise attack
"Damn it, get off me human!" Alejandro barked as he shoved Alex aside, the latter still trying to regain his bearings in the dark space.
Alejandro didn’t even bother checking on Alex as he quickly inspected the situation with his comrades, letting out a sigh of relief only after he’d ensured that everyone was safe.
In the meantime, he gave an order which the BeastMen followed without hesitation.
Moments later, a series of red lights erupted revealing several BeastMen half-turned and without their weapons while also allowing the group to finally make sense of where they were.
Everywhere was covered in vines with blooming flowers on some of them, making for a rather beautiful but eerie scene.
Of course, the scene caused Alex to wonder if they’d been transported to some kind of alternate space or if the vines had just grown over their camp.
There was no space between the vines judging by how packed they were causing Alex’s expression to immediately crumple as he realized the gravity of their situation, which though confusing at its flawless execution, clearly held endless amounts of danger for their party.
"Damn it, turn off the lights!" He exclaimed but before his words could be heeded, it happened.
Several vines suddenly shot out like spears, impaling as many BeastMen as it touched with the others trying to put up a fight.
The lights went out leaving only Alejandro’s own as the sole survivor.
In the chaos, the BeastMen showed just how well-trained they were despite their lack of weaponry but even then, one could easily tell that they were on the losing end.
Alex snapped his fingers instantly, turning himself incorporeal with different shades of black and white rippling like a wave.
The vines tried to damage his form but nothing happened which was a relief but Alex knew he couldn’t remain in this state as it prevented him from moving or using other Abilities, a condition he would have to remedy soon.
Meanwhile, the BeastMen that were pierced through didn’t even get a chance to escape as with each vine they cut, more took their place, firmly holding them in place before it began to drain their vitality, turning them into desiccated corpses which were quickly covered in moss before it then rose back up as a zombie.
Alex didn’t know why but the sight caused him to grit his teeth, feeling helpless as he watched the BeastMen lose their lives.
Just as he made to discard his current form to do something more useful, Alejandro bellowed.
"Enough!"
Boom
The entirety of the space entwined by vines was burned by a heat wave, causing the vines to break apart for a moment, revealing the world outside.
Of course, it was only for a moment.
Even more vines took their place and these were more resistant to the heatwave unleashed by Alejandro.
Alejandro didn’t even have the time to be shocked as several vines sought him out, more so than the rest.
It seemed they’d already noticed that he was the major piece, the main threat within the party.
With his weapons gone, Alejandro was left with utilizing his Abilities which ranged from magma to pure heat, and finally earth, the last of which was most unhelpful.
Taking a moment to wonder why he had thought to put himself in harm’s way for the BeastMen, Alex couldn’t help but ponder why such a feeling had gotten hold of him.
This led him to another question; how had they not noticed the vines covering up their camp if indeed the vines had swallowed up the camp?
It was impossible that not even one noticed the encroachment which caused him to consider the possibility of foul play.
However, before he could think further, Alejandro’s bellow disrupted his thoughts.
"Damn it, human!... You agreed to help us so help us and stop standing there!"
Alex glanced at Alejandro before taking scope of the situation with the other BeastMen which was quite bad.
More than 50 had already succumbed to the vines with the others hurdling together to stand a better chance of survival.
What was he to do though?
None of his current skills would... no, why was he thinking like that?
Once again, he noticed an anomaly.
When had he ever been so out of options?
No, even if he was, there was always improvisation so why hadn’t that come to mind?
His eyes shifted to the flowers blooming within the vine space but he hesitated.
What if he was wrong?
No, the vines had already shown the capability to heal and adapt.
He couldn’t just make use of any Ability else it was sure that he wouldn’t be able to make use of it again and on the off chance they got used to his Power, it could very much be the death of him.
Eventide indeed was a dangerous world.
Though inwardly terrified, Alex couldn’t remain inert.
If Alejandro and the BeastMen died, he’d have to figure out a different way to facilitate his infiltration into the Supreme Order.
No, he had to do something and fast.
"Human!" Alejandro cried out, this time more in plea than aggressively.
Watching his men fall one after the other took a toll on the Rey, a toll he was unwilling to pay.
Alex gritted his teeth as his heart thumped, the desire to save those in need outweighing his self-preservation.
Finally, he gave in.
Nightborne dissipated like a lie with Alex quickly snapping just as several vines rushed out to grab him.
Instantly, his shadow surged and a single blade erupted, ripping apart all the vines before they could touch Alex.
Letting out a sigh of relief, Alex glanced at the floor and then the roof before quickly making a decision.
He snapped yet again and a white horizontal circle with a black vertical circle about it appeared before he tossed it to the roof.
Hopefully, he’d made the right choice.
"Everyone get down!" Alex screamed at the top of his lungs before dropping to the ground.
As a white light bathed the space... Boom
