Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 208: Peculiarities
Chapter 208: Peculiarities
"So that’s what happened to the nobles. They betrayed us." A white-haired man with a beard and a sharp gaze, donning a crisp white dopo with a double sword hanging from his waist, remarked from his chair after hearing what Ana had to say.
Taking a sip from the teacup she was holding, Ana tersely replied. "More or less."
Currently in a large tent with enough space to hold more than 20 people, Ana sat with Arthur seated beside her while Father Anderson stood behind them.
The white-haired man stroked his beard as he continued. "Do we know if they survived such an explosion?"
"I can ascertain that the Goldberg family head is alive but that’s it. Unless I get some keepsakes from the others, I can’t tell."
"This is troublesome." The man muttered as he pondered briefly. "To think that someone was crazy enough to use a Relic to attack a Catacomb from outside. We never considered the possibility."
"Maybe that’s why we suffered such a loss." Arthur nonchalantly said as he took a sip from his teacup.
"Indeed. Hah, unfortunately despite the useful news, we can’t do anything until the reinforcements from the Church arrive."
"Unfortunately, we have to rely on the Church for this," Ana grumbled as she took another sip.
Seemingly taking pride in the fact that he wasn’t completely left out, Father Anderson remarked. "Do not fret. I have already received word from the Cathedral. Reinforcements will arrive in three days."
"That’s good." The white-haired man replied with a sigh.
Taking a moment to savor the taste of his tea, Arthur soon commented. "There is a possibility that the more time we waste, the worse the situation might become."
As silence descended on the tent, no one could deny the underlying sense of foreboding gnawing at their thoughts.

"I’m at Popolis?" Alex muttered in utter disbelief as he couldn’t recall anything related to him arriving at Popolis.
Of course, Watson didn’t share his sentiment and at Alex’s unintended question, scowled. "The hell?... You got dirt in your ear or something?... Didn’t you hear me?"
"Hmm..." Alex’s expression quickly cooled causing Watson to grow wary.
"What?... Why are you looking at me like that?... Don’t you dare do anything you’d regret!"
"..." Perplexed at Watson’s reaction, Alex thought to respond when the door to the room flung open and the robust lady from earlier entered.
"Watson you scoundrel, I heard your voice as I was down the hall... Are you troubling Gerald’s guest?"
"Of course not!... He is the one asking me weird questions."
"Yeah, sure." The woman replied sarcastically before adding gruffly. "Get outta here before I beat you with this ladle."
"Ugh, no need to be so rough."
"Get out!"
"Darn it." Albeit unwilling, Watson turned tail and quickly fled the room, leaving Alex alone with the lady.
"Are you feeling okay?" She asked sweetly after ensuring Watson was gone.
Alex nodded. "Yes, thank you."
"That’s good. Don’t mind that rascal Watson. I swear since Lydia died, he completely lost his common sense. If not for his amazing medical skills, I swear I’d beat him black and blue to put some sense into that thick skull of his."
"... I see," Alex muttered, feeling rather awkward before deciding to steer the conversation in a reasonable direction.
"I hope you don’t mind but... who are you?"
"Ah yes." The robust lady facepalmed as she chuckled softly. "Where are my manners?... You may call me Rebecca."
"Thanks Be..."
"No one but my husband calls me Becca." The lady glowered as she wielded her ladle, causing the homely vibe in the room to quickly grow sinister.
Alex’s gaze widened at the threat, leaving him completely speechless.
"Ahaha, what were you about to say?" Like a bipolar patient, Rebecca’s mood changed yet again, taking on the homely tone from earlier.
Alex coughed awkwardly while scratching his head, unsure of what to make of his current situation.
"..." Rebecca remained silent, waiting for Alex to respond.
"Ahem... I’d like to ask a few questions, Mrs. Rebecca."
"Go ahead."
"Watson told me this is Popolis, is that correct?"
"Indeed, it is."
"... And can you tell exactly how you found me before bringing me..." Alex trailed off as he realized he wasn’t sure of where he was.
Seemingly grabbing his thought process, Rebecca explained. "This is my family house."
"Ah, okay. So how did you..."
"Oh, I didn’t find you."
"... You didn’t?"
Rebecca nodded as she casually replied. "The credit for that goes to my husband. Something about finding you unconscious on the outskirts, yada yada yada... You’ll know more when he gets back."
"I see. Your husband isn’t around?"
"Unfortunately not. As the greatest mercenary in Popolis, he naturally has a lot of responsibilities." Rebecca remarked with a sigh, seeming like someone sad about not being able to spend time with their significant other but then Alex couldn’t shake off the weird feeling that though she may have been sad, her statement was a form of... gloating?
Shaking his head, he quickly got rid of the thought as he spoke up. "I’d like to take a look around if that’s okay with you."
"That’s fine. As a young man, staying in bed for too long isn’t healthy."
"Yeah, so..."
"Ah, that’s true." Rebecca intoned, casually cutting Alex off. "You should come down and have breakfast."
"... Okay?"
***
"What do I do?" Alex thought to himself after Rebecca had left his room with some instructions.
Pondering everything he could glean from his fragmented memories, he quickly pieced together 3 core issues.
Firstly, there was a reason he somehow left Krobridge and appeared in Popolis but how that happened was lost to him. Secondly, Nadia was safe but he didn’t know how or why he was so certain of this and thirdly, there was something urgent he had to do in Popolis but what it was left him more confused.
No doubt, the fact that he was in Popolis meant that the Mantle of Darkness was within reach but even that didn’t seem as important as what was gnawing at his thoughts.
After it became clear that further recollections would be fruitless, Alex decided on a different approach.
Resolving himself to make his decision after he’d met with Rebecca’s husband, he got out of bed and out of his room, finding himself in a wide yet narrow passageway.
After crossing by a modest bedroom and living room, Alex soon arrived at the bathroom located down the hallway.
After washing up and changing into some oversized clothes provided by Rebecca, Alex soon made his way out of the bathroom before heading down.
Walking down a flight of rickety steps, he soon arrived at a lower floor which from all indications, seemed to be... a bar?
