Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 171: Powerless

Chapter 171: Powerless

"Fuck!" Damian bellowed as he tossed a wooden table across the hall.

The table slammed into the wall, shattering on impact.

With bloodshot eyes, he could hardly control his anger as he recalled the events that happened not too long ago.

"Why?... Why?... Why!" He unleashed the power of the Bloodstone, causing ripples in the aether.

The ground beneath his feet caved in as the building shook aggressively.

No one in the mansion dared to show their face as they hid in corners, cowering out of fear of getting caught up in Damian’s rage.

Of course not everyone reacted this way as Horace stood at the entrance to the hall, bearing the full brunt of Damian’s power while pondering on his next course of action.

It was clear that for the time being, The Dark Lord couldn’t defeat Damian due to Charlotte’s presence so helping him run away was the best way to keep him alive.

As long as he has enough time to grow, surely then, Damian wouldn’t be able to do anything but bow.

Of course, Horace didn’t dare to act immediately as he waited for an opportunity.

Meanwhile, Damian kept on throwing his tantrums until almost an hour had gone by.

Breathing heavily, Damian leaned against a pillar and sat on the floor.

His hair was a complete mess with his robe torn in a few places.

If one were none the wiser, he could pass off as a beggar in his current state.

"He was right..." Damian muttered.

Crow Mask had said that Alex was not his match and at that time, it sounded more like an insult but with what happened today, he knew it was nothing but the truth.

If not for Charlotte... as that thought came to mind, Damian clenched his jaw.

He was so powerless that he had to rely on a woman to save him.

Pathetic.

He thought he had escaped the darkness of his past but it didn’t take long for it to catch up with him once again.

That feeling of weakness, of being unable to do anything... Damian loathed it.

And no matter what, he would overcome it.

"Dark Lord, Silver Knight Captain, Liaison... Crow Mask." Damian listed out those that suppressed him.

It was to remind himself that he was nothing but that didn’t mean he would remain this way.

Just like how he became a Monarch, he would ascend to godhood and become a powerhouse no one would look down on.

But to do that, the Blood ritual had to be completed.

Unfortunately with how things were now, it seemed like his initial plan to strike terror into the hearts of men wouldn’t work.

So Damian began to ponder another path... one that would undoubtedly lead him to greatness but at a terrible cost.

However, he was ready.

No matter what it takes... Damian’s eyes glowered with determination as he muttered. "I will become a god."

With Ada’s help, Nadia got a room in Arwen’s manor to rest in.

This was necessary considering her pneuma was completely exhausted from the ridiculous feat she attempted in the gallery.

She was lucky enough not to have her pneuma devoured.

Meanwhile, Alex remained in the sitting room with Claudia excusing herself to watch over Arwen.

"Hah." Alex let out a sigh as he went over the events that happened today.

Two fights and two losses.

He hadn’t experienced such a thing ever since he graduated from training camp back on Earth.

Of course, he could blame it on not being prepared but Alex was well aware that no amount of preparation could have helped him today.

Both Elizabeth and Charlotte had something in common which was that they were able to rid Alex of the one thing that gave him an edge in Eventide.

It was unfortunate but that was the truth and he had to accept it.

As long as he couldn’t figure out a way to stop them from nullifying Evernight, Alex didn’t dare to face either of them.

Pursing his lips, he pondered a bit longer but despite that, nothing came to him.

He let out a tired sigh as he reached out and picked up the glass of water Ada had left on the table for him before taking Nadia with her.

Alex took a sip to quench his thirst before setting it back down.

He closed his eyes to calm his nerves as a sense of powerlessness threatened to engulf him.

Soon after, he picked up the glass again and after emptying its contents, rose to his feet.

He couldn’t stay here for long.

It remained unclear how Elizabeth found him but it was certain that she could track him down somehow.

Which meant staying in one place for too long would lead to problems.

Of course, Nadia could stay since Elizabeth was only aiming for him.

Just as he prepared to take his leave, he heard a voice.

"Are you leaving?"

Alex turned towards the stairs to find Claudia standing at the midway point.

Taking a deep breath, he nodded gently.

"Did... did Lady Elizabeth attack you?"

"She would have found me sooner or later. I’m guessing you blame yourself for leading her to me."

"That..."

"It’s easy to tell what you think with your expressions. Do not worry, this was bound to happen."

"... I’m sorry."

Alex did not reply, instead responding with a calm smile.

As he turned to leave, Claudia called out to him again.

"Hmm?"

"Before you go... would it be possible to come with me?"

"Why?"

"... It’s Arwen. She wants to see you."

"Did she say why?"

"No... but it was urgent. She can’t come down right now since she’s still recuperating so..." Claudia trailed off, worried that she’d offend Alex with her words.

"Is that why you came down?"

"...Mn."

Alex nodded thoughtfully before replying. "Alright then. Lead me to her."

Claudia’s expression brightened as she remarked while bowing consecutively. "Thank you, thank you."

Alex followed Claudia to one of the 9 rooms in Arwen’s manor.

Located on the opposite end of the room that the Slenderman had spawned from, he was quite impressed with the view the window provided.

Outside, one could just about make out a forest area with a few fruit crops growing.

"Thank you," Arwen said after Alex arrived.

Her complexion was quite pale but at least it was better than last night.

Claudia sat at the bedside with her attention on Arwen.

"For?"

"For coming."

"It sounded urgent."

Arwen pursed her lips at Alex’s casual reply and after pondering for a minute, inquired with her head bowed.

"I have a question if you do not mind."

"Is it related to why I am here?"

"Yes..." Arwen replied.

"... I see. Then go ahead." Alex said.

Arwen slowly raised her head and met Alex’s gaze.

Parting her lips, she asked. "If you had to choose, in a situation where Krobridge was about to be destroyed...

"Would you save the Night Kindred or choose to save the humans?"
