Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 169: Deadly force
Chapter 169: Deadly force
As Nadia was dragged back by Alex, allowing her to barely avoid Charlotte’s blade, she found herself reminiscing over her past.
This was partly because of her delirious state brought about as a result of her exhausted pneuma.
The voice of her father echoed in her ear.
’When you arrive in Ra’as, be wary of the Night Kindred and most importantly, avoid the Vampirekin as much as possible.’
Nadia could still remember the day he said those words like it was yesterday.
It was a week before she escaped her home to leave for Ra’as.
Her father, who was by no means a Mystic, did his best to share as much mystical knowledge as he could grasp to ensure she was safe.
His chubby smiling face reflected in her vision as Nadia wondered what he was up to now.
Back then, she was already quite knowledgeable about a lot of things in the supernatural world, including the history between Devil Wheel Mystics and Vampires.
However, upon arriving in Ra’as, she would find out from Arthur that there was certain information she wasn’t privy to, one of which was about the Silver Knights.
Originally known as the terror of the continent, they would end up being defeated during the Great Purge and then disappeared without a trace.
Perhaps an attempt by the Great Families to suppress information about them or the Eastern Highlands’ desire not to be shamed due to their defeat, the history of what happened to the Silver Knights was lost and known to only a select few.
In her delirium, Nadia watched the scenes unfold up until Charlotte took on an aura similar to Alex’s.
Shocked by the turn of events, she immediately snapped to her senses as she realized... she would soon witness the reason why the Silver Knights had been such a deadly force during the Dark Ages.

Alex stared at Charlotte as she grinned from ear to ear, ecstatic about the power flowing through her veins.
He had the mind to ask her how she did it but he had a feeling she wouldn’t respond.
"..." Meanwhile behind Charlotte and her subordinates, Damian stared speechlessly while Horace was left pondering his next course of action.
Compared to the rash Damian, Alex naturally gave off the air of a true ruler.
But he knew he’d die the moment he decided to help him.
He wasn’t foolish to think his pride or desires would save him.
Horace believed in conforming to those in power.
It was the surest way to ensure his survival and so far, it had worked perfectly, allowing him to live 8 centuries.
Closing his eyes, Horace made a simple prayer. "If you truly are the Dark Lord... prove yourself."

Silence reigned for a moment before it was broken by a sudden snap.
Alex’s shadow twitched like a living creature for a moment before several white wolves with black armor erupted from it and charged at Charlotte without warning.
However, Charlotte didn’t even spare the attack a glance as she waved her hands almost disdainfully.
The next moment, the wolves disappeared like a lie, leaving Nadia stunned and Alex with a frown.
At that moment, a certain memory resurfaced.
’When a Cryptid and Mystic of the same level meet, the Cryptid is most likely to win, especially if they are of the same domain.’
Those were Arthur’s words to him, warning him never to get cocky when facing off against Cryptids.
Back then, he had pondered on why he said that but now, seeing as how Charlotte so easily dispelled his attack, he had an inkling.
"Surprisingly, you are better at using my domain," Alex remarked soon after.
Charlotte grinned. "Your human physiology just so happens to be your downfall."
"Oh?" Alex raised a brow.
"All I have to do is exert my will and your domain will respond accordingly."
"But you won’t be able to use my Abilities."
"It’s enough that you can’t use them." Charlotte harshly replied. "After all, without your abilities, what else can you offer?"
Alex’s eyes narrowed as he found himself in a bit of a conundrum.
In his desire to get rid of this problem before it got out of hand, he lost his cautious nature, ultimately landing him in his current predicament.
Of course, he could have never planned for such an eventuality but unfortunately, it happened and now he had to figure out how to handle the aftermath.
Then again, with Evernight rendered useless what else did he have under his belt that was capable of combating his adversaries?
Alex clenched his jaw as two options came to mind but judging from past experiences, both would naturally leave him in a terrible state once over and if it so happened that one of those options still ended up useless against Charlotte... Alex realized just how bad the situation he was in.
Of course, he tried his best not to show the worry on his face as he retained his aloofness.
Meanwhile, Charlotte glared hatefully at Alex.
She was never one to be excessively emotional but once upon a time, her squadron had 130 members.
Due to the Great Purge, a mere 13 remained alive, forcing her to cherish those she had left, and now before her eyes, she watched as three of them were killed just like that.
She wasn’t used to the feeling burning in her chest at this moment but one thing was for certain.
Only with Alex’s death would the fire be doused!
So without hesitation, she gestured for her subordinates, four of which charged forward with eyes filled with bloodlust.
Within seconds, they crossed the distance and prepared to strike with no mercy.
Alex clenched his fists and was already prepared to utilize his understanding regarding the aether coating he had performed while facing Elizabeth but before he could complete the process, a resounding crack echoed throughout the gallery forcing everyone to come to a pause.
Nadia, seemingly startled by the sound, muttered under her breath. "...What was that?"
