Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 163: Dying without regrets
Chapter 163: Dying without regrets
As pulsating black and white receded, Alex appeared in a familiar alleyway.
It was the same one that he had entered to confront Claudia.
Unlike last time, however, the alleyway was already occupied.
The sudden clattering of metal caused Alex to glance back only to discover a tramp staring at him from behind a trash can.
"You..." the tramp attempted to say something but paused as he heard a snap after which his vision darkened and he fell into a deep slumber.
"Damn it." Alex cursed as he glanced at his quivering right arm.
Despite his incredible healing factor, The damage he incurred from facing Elizabeth had not worn off yet.
He took a few deep breaths as he tried to stop the incessant shaking.
It took more than a minute but he soon got it under control, though an uncontrollable twitch that occurred at intervals remained.
With that settled, he slowly sauntered out of the alleyway and after a quick look around, strolled down the street.
The post office he went to the previous night was close by and not too far from the post office was the publication house, the Daily Tribune.
Both establishments were basically on the same street.
It didn’t take long before Alex arrived at his destination.
As he surveyed the area, it wasn’t long before he discovered a problem.
It was almost subconscious but it seemed every single person walking on the street made sure to avoid coming within 10 feet of the Daily Tribune.
Some even went as far as crossing the sidewalk to stay as far away as possible.
Alex pursed his lips and after pondering on a possibility, went ahead to meditate while standing.
Almost 10 minutes passed before he stopped and then quickly made his way into the building.
As he opened the door, a weird sensation permeated his body but didn’t last long before it dissipated like a lie.
Alex didn’t think much of it as he stepped into the hall and closed the door behind him.
Making his way over to the reception, he called the attention of the young lady seated there.
"Hello."
"Good morning, sir. How may I help you?" The young lady inquired with a radiant smile.
Alex didn’t immediately respond as he scrutinized the young lady.
It didn’t take long before he noticed a peculiarity on her neck.
The collar of her top was placed to cover up most of it but Alex made out what looked to be a bite mark from the marking that remained.
"Are you okay?" He asked after a full minute of silence.
"Yes, thank you." The lady replied.
"I see." Alex nodded thoughtfully before inspecting the hall.
There was no one else apart from the receptionist but Alex could have sworn that someone was staring at him... and it was not the young lady at the reception table.
Letting out a sigh, he remarked. "Come out."
Almost a full minute passed before a man emerged from the stairs.
Alex met the man’s gaze and for a brief moment, no one spoke.
The man soon made his way over and after bowing slightly, gestured for Alex to follow him.
Alex could just about make out both reverence and killing intent from the man as he followed behind him.
’Reverence because he considers me the Dark Lord and killing intent because he’s been sent to kill me?’ Alex guessed as they walked down a flight of stairs into the basement.
No one spoke and it wasn’t necessary to do so in the first place.
Soon enough, they reached the end of the stairs and Alex found himself in a spacious basement lit by a few gas lamps with stacks of newspapers placed about as well as various machines.
A thick musty smell wafted into his nostrils and the surrounding cold threatened to penetrate his bones.
The man kept on walking until they reached the center of the basement where a group of similarly dressed men were waiting alongside Nadia, Booker, and a woman that made Alex wary.
’She is strong.’ Alex muttered inwardly as he placed his hands in his pocket with an aloof stance.
"Alex, leave!... They want to kill you!" Nadia quickly cried out as she saw him.
However, what she received in response was a cold glare causing her to shut her mouth almost immediately.
Alex took a deep breath as he shifted his gaze from Nadia to Booker.
The latter flinched at the icy gaze but did not attempt to leave, instead shuffling closer to the blonde-haired lady.
"You must be the Dark Lord." The lady said before adding with a curtsy. "I pay my respect."
Alex completely ignored her as he kept his eyes on Booker.
"You led them here?" Alex asked.
Booker’s lips quivered as he replied. "Indeed, I did. They did what you couldn’t do and killed Finnick, so I was obliged to help them."
Alex nodded. "I see."
"... Do you regret not helping me?" Booker asked after a brief hesitation.
"Regret?" Alex pondered momentarily before shaking his head. "Not at all. What happened that night had nothing to do with me and I have no right to kill you just because you blame me for not playing the hero. I gave you a choice and unfortunately, you chose death."
He seemed tired as he spoke, his calm and dreary voice causing Booker’s heart to palpitate unevenly.
Taking a deep breath, he remarked. "...Make it quick."
Alex’s gaze lingered on him a moment longer before he shifted to Catherine.
Their eyes met and after a silent exchange between the two, Alex returned his attention to Booker and using his fingers, mimicked the shape of a gun, before aiming.
"Bang." He mouthed calmly as a bullet made of white and black light emerged from his fingertip.
It moved in a straight line, piercing Booker’s skull before he had a chance to react.
It happened so quickly, so there was no pain and his eyes remained resolute, devoid of regret.
