Chapter 159: Elizabeth Von Miller

The sweet smell of lavender coupled with the golden rays of the sun greeted Alex as he opened his eyes.

He found himself back in his bedroom with the bedsheets over his face.

Taking a moment to understand what was happening, he was soon jolted from his thoughts by a familiar laughter coming from underneath the covers.

"What’s on your mind?" Isabella said as she emerged from the covers, straddling Alex while her hands were placed on his chest.

Alex blinked a few times before a faint smile appeared at the corner of his lips. "I stargazed for a bit too long, didn’t I?"

"Hmm?" Isabella raised a brow in confusion.

Reaching out, he placed his palm on her cheek and asked. "What time is it?"

"It’s still early."

"I know but..."

"You have to go... I know." Isabella’s expression seemed to grow a bit dreary but her smile remained, albeit a bit dimmer than usual.

"Isabella..."

"Will you be back tonight?" Isabella cut him off, not giving him a chance to explain.

Alex’s smile turned melancholic as he sat up and hugged her tightly.

For a few seconds, no words were spoken as he took in Isabella’s scent, even as it was just a memory.

"You smell as sweet as always." He muttered as he looked up to meet her gaze.

Isabella stared at him for quite some time before letting out a sigh.

Placing her palms on his cheek, she leaned closer and planted a peck on his lips.

"Be safe."

"... I will."

Alex opened his eyes to find himself back in the lodge he and Nadia occupied.

The golden rays of the Lightbringer shone brightly, illuminating the entire room... and his face.

Massaging his temples, he closed his eyes for a moment and recalled the dream he had before he woke up.

The events that happened after that specific memory was what led to his death.

"I’m sorry, my love." He muttered as his eyes felt wet.

He stayed unmoving for quite some time as he struggled to keep his emotions in check.

After he managed to do so, he let out a sigh and opened his eyes while adjusting his shoulders as they felt a bit stiff, no doubt as a result of him sleeping on the chair.

He then glanced toward the bed only to discover Nadia’s absence.

"Where did she go?" Alex wondered as he sat up and looked around the room.

Furrowing his brows, he closed his eyes and sniffed about before opening them back.

"She left not too long ago." He muttered as he got to his feet only to pause as a piece of paper placed on the table beside the window caught his eyes.

Picking it up, he briefly scrutinized it before letting out another sigh.

"To a printing press, huh." Having learned of her general location, Alex no longer bothered with her situation as he tore up the paper before heading to the bathroom to take a bath.

After freshening up, he prepared to leave for the pub to get something to eat only to pause at the door as a knock was heard from outside.

Raising a brow, he inquired. "Who’s there?"

No response came for a while and with Alex noticing the faint trace of killing intent emerging from outside, he let out a sigh and reached for the doorknob.

He turned it and opened up to find a lady standing outside with two uniformed men behind her, standing on her left and right.

Alex scrutinized them briefly before his gaze landed on the lady leading them.

Her auburn hair was the first thing that caught his eyes followed by her unnatural bone structure that seemed a bit too perfect to be human.

Then came her body physique that despite looking slender, somehow seemed strong enough to threaten Alex if he let his guard down.

Revealing a complicated expression, he inquired. "How may I help you, officers?"

"May we come in... sir?" The lady replied with a question of her own, her eyes trained on Alex, almost as though she were a predator eyeing her prey.

Alex sighed inwardly as he hoped the situation wasn’t what he thought it to be, if not, things could turn troublesome.

"Come in." He said as he stepped away from the door before making his way over to the table by the window and leaning against it.

The lady stepped in and after ordering her subordinates to wait outside for her, she closed the door before returning her attention to Alex.

"Are you Kane?"

"Who’s asking?"

"Lady Elizabeth von Miller, Liaison of Stronghold 13 and head of the Department of Special Relations."

"Interesting title." Alex nodded, seemingly intrigued as he added. "Well, I’m not Kane."

"I’m glad you didn’t attempt to lie." Elizabeth remarked leaving Alex amused.

"You knew it was a fake name?"

"It’s easy to discern lies from the truth. It would do you well to be honest. I detest deceit."

"I’ll keep that in mind."

"So if you are not Kane, what is your name?"

"Does it matter?"

"... I guess it doesn’t."

As his lips curled up slightly, Alex inquired. "So what does a lady of your standing want in my humble abode?"

Elizabeth studied Alex’s demeanor and after realizing his calmness, she wondered if it was out of ignorance of his situation or if he was just that bold.

However, considering how she operated, she didn’t immediately attack.

Taking a deep breath, she asked. "Tell me something, Mr. Kane... How much do you know about the Dark Ages?"

"Not enough." Alex casually replied.

"Indeed, it’s understandable." Elizabeth nodded. "The Dark Ages were a time in the history of Ra’as when humans were treated like third-class citizens, even worse than livestock by the Creatures of the Night."

"I see."

"Humans were forced to live like rats underground and if not for the Great Families, several more would have been born down there as well... isn’t it terrifying to imagine?... The fact that so many innocents would have had to live a life of terror just for being human."

Alex pursed his lips. "Thankfully they can live their lives on the surface without worries."

"Indeed they can... but then how do you think they would react after finding out that there’s a possibility that such a thing could happen?"

"You would fight back."

Elizabeth nodded with an emotionless expression as she met Alex’s calm gaze head-on.

Taking a moment to catch her breath, she inquired in a hoarse tone. "... So am I wrong in wanting to kill you, O Dark Lord, the so-called savior of the Night Kindred?"
