Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 138: House call

Chapter 138: House call

In the great dining hall of Horace’s manor located in the 2nd Extension, tension was high.

The usually proud and noble residents of the household were forced to hide themselves for fear of getting into trouble as they sneakily went about their business while throwing glances at the ones currently occupying the hall.

The Liaison, alongside 6 of her most trusted aides, sat at a table filled with an assortment of delicacies that were largely untouched.

The expressions they held signaled they had been waiting for quite some time with some already itching to use the weapons they carried to make a statement.

It didn’t take long before one finally lost his cool and in his annoyance, called out to a passing female Vampire.

"Hey, you!... Come over here."

The Vampire looked around before pointing at herself. "Me?"

"Who else?... Get over here!" The man bellowed.

"Yes!" Scared out of her wits, the Vampire quickly rushed over with her head bowed.

Watching the scene play out, the Liaison remained quiet, seemingly meditating as she promptly shut her eyes.

"What the hell is going on?... Is your master going to keep the Liaison waiting?... Have you all lost your minds?..." The man accompanying the Liaison didn’t stop as he continuously ran his mouth, insulting the master of the house while ruthlessly bullying the girl.

Due to the Peace Accords, the Great Families held the upper hand on the relationship they had with the night creatures that chose to remain in the strongholds.

This was why those chosen to enforce the rules most times ended up maltreating the Night Creatures not because they did something wrong but because they could.

It wasn’t news that a few Departmental agents had gone out of their way to harass Vampires unlucky to stray into their path in Krobridge.

Just as the Liason’s aide was getting out of hand, a terrifying pressure rushed into the hall, covering its entirety.

The Liaison’s aides stiffened upon sensing the authority that existed within the pressure.

It was pervasive and seemed to read everything in a single moment.

Using the opportunity, the young female Vampire that was being bullied quickly turned tail and ran away from the hall for fear of getting caught up in the ensuing clash.

Slowly but surely, the pressure began to tighten around their necks, threatening to silence them if they made any sudden moves.

Muffled groans escaped their lips as they tried to break free.

Just as they began to lose consciousness, a calm voice resounded.

"Enough... else I will take your actions as enough reason to do away with the Accords and end your life."

With that, the pressure receded like a lie before Damian revealed himself alongside Horace.

He wore a simple black and red suit and carried a gold inlaid cane.

Revealing an amiable smile, he slowly made his way to the table.

"Elizabeth!... It’s so nice to see you." Damian remarked with his arms wide open only to pause upon noticing the Liaison’s... no, Elizabeth’s expression.

With a slight hint of disdain, she spoke. "We are neither friends nor allies for you to say my name. Make the mistake to do so again and I will not hesitate to take drastic measures."

Damian was left completely speechless at her words.

This... Liaison seemed to be even more fierce than Horace had informed him.

He had a gut feeling... Elizabeth would be hard to fool.

’Horace... What game are you playing?’ he couldn’t help but wonder.

Earlier he had unleashed his authority to probe Elizabeth but instead of her, it was her subordinates that were affected.

He could sense slight traces of anti-magic from her.

Damian pursed his lips as he smiled yet again. "Understood."

Elizabeth, seemingly satisfied, nodded. "Good enough. Now then, let’s cut to the chase... who are you and why are you playing king in my house?"

"That..."

"I know all I need to know about you, Damian Salvatore," Elizabeth remarked, cutting Damian off. "Your arrogance and naivety have caused you to try and cause chaos in my city but I’ll let you know that I do not treat ambitious vampires like you kindly!"

"..." Damian gritted his teeth as he felt humiliated.

How many times would he feel like that in one day?

It was difficult to hold his bloodlust back at this point as a little leaked out from his being.

Elizabeth noticed this and prepared to strike should Damian make the wrong move.

However, just as quickly as the bloodlust appeared, it vanished like a lie.

"You are right," Damian said with a sigh. "I know fully well how the Liaison treats Vampires that threaten to disrupt the peace brought about by the Accords."

"Yet you dare carry out such drastic actions?... Do you consider me a fool?" Elizabeth glared at Damian with her piercing green irises, emanating a pressure that caused the latter to feel threatened.

Damian’s grip tightened on his cane as he slowly bowed. "You misunderstood me completely, Liason. My actions are in a bid to save Krobridge from imminent destruction."

"... What are you talking about?"

’Yes indeed, what are you talking about?’ Horace couldn’t help but ponder as well as he stared at Damian’s back.

So far he was having quite a wonderful time but for some reason, a deep sense of foreboding that his fun was about to end caused him to grow wary.

Damian was arrogant and quite egotistic, but beyond all that, he was still a genius with the power to make things happen.

Horace was well aware with his vices, Damian would make for a very dangerous Vampire.

Damian let out a sigh as he raised his head to meet Elizabeth’s gaze.

Taking a deep breath, he explained. "The reason I sent my people out to destroy the black market was for two reasons; those bastards have been involved in so many bad things that have happened in Krobridge, they had it coming, and secondly... they were harboring information about a being capable of bringing back the Dark Ages."

"Who?"

"... The Dark Lord."
