Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 128: Night King
Chapter 128: Night King
As Alex watched Booker struggle in Finnick’s grasp, his gaze fixated on him... begging, pleading for him to help him out, he couldn’t help but ponder on a certain thought.
Would he be considered a hero if he saved this man?
The same person that a moment ago, treated someone the same way he was being treated now?
There was a reason Alex was unwilling to accept Adam’s second trial and even though he ended up accepting it, it was because he had no choice.
Since his days back on Earth, Alex had grown wary of the title of hero.
It was because, depending on the person, the definition of a hero could change.
As a decorated special operative, it’s natural that his superiors labeled him a hero.
A man that did what he had to to get the job done.
With numerous successes, it would have been easy to accept those accolades but he never found himself able to do so.
Why?
It was because he knew what he had done for those successes to exist.
The lives he had sacrificed, those he had destroyed... the good people he had to put down all for the ’mission’
Alex wasn’t dumb enough to delude himself into believing he was some sort of hero.
Neither was he a villain.
He was just a man that did what he had to get the job done.
Isabella had always tried to get him not to judge himself so much but he knew what he was... he knew that the blood he had shed would never be washed off.
This was why as he watched Finnick strangle Booker, he questioned himself.
Had he done the right thing?
He naturally had no reason to interfere in the conflict that transpired but it remained that human lives were taken and he stood idly by and watched.
Starting with the man from earlier and now with Booker’s request, he had a reason to interfere but found himself still unwilling to do so.
What did it mean to be a hero?
To save all those that required saving, no matter how dark their past was?... Was that what it meant?
Alex realized that the trial Adam gave him was much more difficult than he initially thought.
As he remained torn within, Nadia acutely noticed him spacing out.
She knew he was struggling, for what reason, however, remained a mystery.
A question lingered at the tip of her tongue but she found herself unwilling to ask anything now considering the situation they found themselves in.
Taking a deep breath, she attempted to pull Alex away only to pause as a frightening amount of bloodlust rushed toward her.
Her heart skipped a beat and Nadia was left frozen as a few crazed vampires, drunk on the blood they had taken, rushed at her, completely uncaring as to what Finnick had ordered.
Even if they couldn’t have Alex, the girl would have to do!
However, as they closed in on her, a peculiar echo snapped them from their reverie.
Pa
Light and Darkness intertwined to form a scenery that stunned everyone present.
Finnick was the most shocked as he couldn’t help but mutter. "...Night."
Then Alex’s voice was heard.
"I allowed you to kill Booker’s goons because it had no connection with me and your boss even warned you against it yet... you chose death?"
As a chuckle escaped his lips, Alex continued. "Believe me when I say you have made a grievous mistake not heeding his warning."
Boom
Alex’s authority rushed out like a torrent, causing the building they were in to quake to its very foundation.
"This..." the Vampires were terrified with their minds cleared of the brief hunger that drove them mad.
They attempted to step back but they had nowhere to go to considering Alex’s might encompassed the entire space.
For the first time since their arrival, Finnick and his men felt trapped.
Before they had a chance to recover from their initial shock, several things began to take shape within the intertwined light and shadow.
Slowly but surely it soon finished forming, taking the shape of wolves made of light and covered in shadows.
"What is this?"
Alex directly ignored the panic displayed by the vampires as he ordered in a detached manner. "Kill them."
With a low growl, the wolves attacked and without mercy, tore the Vampire that dared to move against Nadia to shreds.
Their blood splattered the floor and soon Booker’s office held a strong scent of blood as well.
Terrified by Alex’s onslaught, Finnick inadvertently dropped Booker to the ground, his eyes shaken and his throat bobbing regularly.
Booker had a crazed smile upon watching the spectacle take place.
In a loud voice, he sought to egg Alex on. "Kill these bastards!... Kill every single one of them!"
"Quiet!" Alex bellowed in annoyance at what he saw as Booker’s tantrums.
Booker was forced to shut his mouth hole as his heart skipped a bit.
He wasn’t stupid to believe that Alex was his ally just because they were both humans.
But he expected Alex would be angry that Finnick’s men had tried to attack Nadia.
He was but he had a better grasp on his emotions than he thought.
Booker’s desire to use Alex as a tool to exert his revenge was snuffed out before it grew too deep.
Alex stared at Booker briefly before he spoke. "You speak of justice and avenging your family yet I dare say you have done much worse to those that dared to cross you, yet you dare try to use me as a tool?... Do you think I don’t dare rip you apart these very instant for upsetting me!"
Alex tried to say more but Nadia’s soft and warm palm wrapped around his own caused him to pause.
Taking a deep breath, the suffocating pressure he exuded reduced, albeit slightly.
Just then, he heard Finnick’s voice.
"Dark Lord."
Alex glanced at Finnick to find that he was completely traumatized by his rough display of power.
Even more than that, despite the trauma, Finnick still had eyes filled with reverence and worship for him instead of fear and anger.
"You are the Dark Lord," Finnick repeated before falling to his knees and slamming his head into the ground. "This junior greets the Night King and the Master of the Night Kindred!"
