Chapter 122: Memories

As Alex soaked in the bathtub with cold and hot water flowing out of the taps, merging for a perfectly warm temperature, he couldn’t help but let out a sigh at how refreshing it felt.

How long had it been since he had such a nice bath?

He had been so efficient these last few days, it was truly troublesome.

Chuckling softly, he mused. "Aren’t I being a bit too lazy?"

At that moment, he seemed to hear the voice of his ever-loving wife, Isabella as the memory of a conversation they once had, came flooding back.

Closing his eyes, he listened carefully.

[There’s no need to overwork yourself. Work is done and now you are home. Enough with the alert state, enough with keeping one eye open when sleeping... just relax.]

It was almost like he was catapulted back to his home on Earth.

The lavender scent that was ever present in his home lingered in the air, almost making him believe he was back there, away from the troubles of the new world.

He opened his eyes or at least it seemed that way as the familiar sitting room with floral drapes and a rather fancy design was laid out before his eyes.

Seated next to him while cupping his face with her soft and delicate hands was his wife Isabella.

Her dark lips moved seductively while her brown skin glistened in the afternoon sun as its rays invaded their home through the open windows.

Meeting her eyes, Alex felt he could get lost in them.

As he stared blankly, the conversation continued.

[What if someone comes to get us?]

[Stop worrying about the future and live in the now. The future will take care of itself]

[And if it doesn’t?]

[Then we will deal with it. For now... rest]

Like a tape, the memory soon came to a pause and like that, floated back into the starry sky above.

Memories of Earth... were what Alex called the stars that dotted the night sky of the Evernight domain

He laid on the cold black rocks of the island in Evernight and with his hands under his head, looked toward the sky.

With a soft smile at the corner of his lips, he slowly relived those memories.

Some painful, some beautiful... It was enough as long as it helped to remind him of the reason he was doing so much.

’I wonder what she’d be doing now?’ Alex wondered, thinking back to his mischievous daughter that never ceased to amaze him.

Sighing heavily, he soon withdrew himself from the memories.

Though he would have loved nothing more than to spend more time, he knew that they were just memories.

Things that had already happened.

If he wanted to enjoy them, he had to finish his task here and then return to his queen and princess to create more memories with them.

So, albeit unwilling, Alex bade farewell to the memories as he opened his eyes and gingerly stepped out of the bathtub.

Noticing the vague wrinkles on his skin, he quickly guessed that he might have stayed in the water for a bit too long.

It didn’t matter as he dried himself and after tying his towel around his waist, opened the bathroom door and walked out while running his hand through his wet hair.

At the same time, the bedroom door opened and Nadia walked in with a tray only to pause as she made eye contact with Alex.

Then ever so slowly, her eyes trailed down from his eyes to his chin and then his chest and by the time she reached his toes, Nadia was feeling quite hot.

"Ahem." She quickly coughed to hide the biological implications of her current state before slowly moving to place the tray she carried on the only table available in the room.

Due to the state of the lodge they entered, the room wasn’t all that large or luxurious, barely having enough space to contain 20 people but at least there was no need to use a public bathroom, which both Nadia and Alex were grateful for.

Unfortunately, with how quickly they were burning through their funds, Alex knew that sooner or later, they’d have to discuss the matter.

For now, however, Alex decided to focus on the most important matter.

Getting dressed.

By the time he was done, Nadia had finished setting the table and was silently stealing peeks at him.

"What did you get?" Alex asked to ease the atmosphere.

Nadia replied with a bit of a stutter. "Tomato soup and roast meat."

"Pretty good stuff." Alex nodded with appreciation before making his way over.

Dressed in a simple linen shirt with black trousers and shoes to match, Alex looked more like a middle-class citizen than his original look in BoneHaven which set him out as a noble and a pretty high-ranking one at that, what with his looks that were already enough to make most women swoon for him.

Nadia herself was dressed in a casual red lehenga with hardly any jewelry on her person.

She too, just like Alex, intended not to stand out too much though absolutely nothing would make her change her dress sense which showed her Judah-born heritage.

Alex carried the tray and after placing it on the bed, gestured to Nadia. "Won’t you join me?"

Nadia nodded wordlessly before making her way over to the bed as well.

Just like that, the duo silently ate their dinner as the rays of the Lightbringer slowly but surely dimmed.

It didn’t take too long before Alex spoke up. "I was thinking..."

"Hmm?"

"If we do manage to get permission to use the airstrip, that would be great, yeah?"

"Such things won’t quickly happen and even if it does, they won’t immediately give us access since we are from a different region."

"I understand." Alex nodded. "But to get to that stage, we’d need information on who owns what and how to get it done."

Nadia paused momentarily before nodding in agreement. "That’s true."

"And while we are at it, we could attempt completing our trials. I know you haven’t completed yours yet."

Nadia remained silent for a moment, first looking into Alex’s dark irises before nodding. "Mn. That’s fine by me."

"Then we can start once it gets dark."

"Tonight?" Nadia was a bit taken aback by the suddenness.

Alex revealed a teasing smile as he replied. "Why not?"
