Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 120: Unsuspecting
Chapter 120: Unsuspecting
He had always dreamed of a day when he would reach the top.
Recalling the days when he was blessed to shed his human skin to take on a superior identity, Damian couldn’t help but feel a great sense of satisfaction.
The days when he had to live in fear of the humans as he knew overstepping his boundaries would lead to terrible consequences were long gone and now he could indulge in his desires as much as he wants without having to care about anything.
Just the thought of the great future caused Damian to tremble in joy.
’So wonderful.’
As he basked in the glory that had not yet come, A voice was heard.
"It was an eye opener watching you put the Dukes in their place, young master Damian."
Damian turned in the direction of the voice to find the 3rd seat standing at the entrance to the octagonal hall.
Unlike his fellow dukes that had long since taken their leave, he remained, and unlike before when he stood proudly, this time, he seemed a bit more subservient, with his head slightly bowed and his voice lowered.
Damian chuckled. "You did well, Horace. If not for your help, I would have never been able to enter this great hall."
"You flatter me, young master." The 3rd seat... no, Horace replied with a pleased smile. "I still remember the day you came to me. The power and charisma you exuded were at a level where I knew no one else would be able to lead us to the promised land."
Damian smiled in response, knowing fully well that Horace’s words were sophistry at best.
He still recalled the fear he saw in the latter’s eyes when he threatened to wipe out his dukedom should he not bring him to the hall.
Then again, it’s not like he didn’t feel good after all, Horace was only trying to get on his good side.
"What about the other dukes?" Damian asked after barely calming the joy in his heart.
Horace replied. "They have long since left on their way, young master. Back to their dukedoms to make preparations."
"That’s good." Damian nodded.
He didn’t expect them to immediately accept his rule as a Monarch since it was all so sudden and judging from how long they’d lived, the thought of handing over their painstakingly grown power would surely hurt.
But then what could they do about it?
"If any of them show any signs of resistance, I won’t hesitate to crush them and their families," Damian said with a hint of hostility.
Horace couldn’t help but step back in fright as a chill ran up his spine.
Glancing over, Damian quickly let go of the hostility and chuckled. "Calm yourself, you are my loyal servant so you can rest assured... Once the revolution begins, you will be by my side."
"... Thank you, young master," Horace replied before asking. "What are your orders now?"
"Send word to our people in Krobridge and the Extensions. Let them know that they no longer have to suppress their desires. Let them have their fill."
"But won’t this draw the ire of the D.O.D?" Horace couldn’t help but point out.
"To my knowledge, they do not have a branch here, no?"
Horace nodded "You are right, young master. This is because of the Peace Accord signed between the Great Families and the Leaders of Black Night.
"So is there a problem?"
"Indeed. Though there is no branch, a liaison has been placed to watch over us to ensure we don’t break the Accord. I will tell you now young master, the liaison is not an easy person to deal with and even if we do manage to deal with her, that would spark the beginning of a war with our faction, and whichever Great family picks up interest in the matter."
Damian revealed a rare scowl as he realized that the situation wasn’t as simple as he thought it to be.
But then, he had to figure out a way to allow the Vampires of Krobridge and the towns around it the privilege to hunt as much as they want without drawing the attention of the D.O.D, at least, not before the ritual to become the Blood God was complete.
Damian might be proud but he wasn’t stupid.
He knew that one well-trained member of the Great Families would be enough to rip him apart even with his Monarch status since he was nowhere as strong as the true Monarchs of the Dark Ages.
If anything, amongst the things Damian had said during the gathering, one he most agreed with was the fact that the Vampires of the current age and those of the Dark Ages were incomparable since the latter had not only the backing of the Mantle of Darkness, they also had an all you can eat buffet to infinitely increase their strength.
Damian pursed his lips, pondering on the situation before letting out a tired sigh.
"This is troublesome indeed."
"Young master?" Horace raised a brow.
"The ritual requires the blood of ten thousand but not just any blood would do as they need to have an inherent fear of us. If they do not fear us, the ritual cannot hold."
"Which is why you wish for our brethren to begin an onslaught on the human populace?"
"Exactly." Damian nodded before letting out another sigh. "Tell me, Horace. Is there a way to deal with this problem?"
Horace’s eyes flickered for a moment before he fell into deep thought.
It took him almost a full minute before he revealed a most cunning smile.
Damian noticed this and so with a smile of his own, inquired. "Do you have a plan, Horace?"
"Indeed my lord. One that, though dangerous, could help us avoid any problems, at least not until the ritual is completed."
"I did well to trust in you, Horace," Damian said, inwardly leaping in joy as he added. "From now onwards, consider yourself my right-hand man."
With those words, the two vampires began their plan for the unsuspecting humans above.

As the rays of the Nighteye dwindled, signaling that nighttime was coming to an end, Melissa returned to Alex’s boxcar to inform him that the assistance she requested would arrive by dawn.
Alex nodded in satisfaction. "Alright then. I guess we’ll be taking our leave."
As he spoke, Nadia busied herself with taking out their luggage.
As they quietly left the boxcar, Alex noticed that the crowd from earlier had long since returned to their respective boxcars after helping to bury the bodies of those that had died, leaving only the busted train parts behind.
"Will I see you again!?" Melissa suddenly asked, catching Alex and in extension, Nadia, off guard.
The latter had on a complicated expression as she waited for Alex’s response.
Revealing a soft smile, Alex replied. "if fate allows it, we shall."
"... Alright." Albeit unsatisfied with the vague response, Melissa did not push the matter, instead replying with a smile of her own.
With that, Alex took hold of the baggage and Nadia took the lead as they headed west of the train tracks.
It didn’t take long before he began to jog with Nadia struggling to keep up.
They soon left Melissa’s view with the latter muttering a low ’take care’ before returning to the boxcar in preparation to receive those she called.
Meanwhile, Alex and Nadia soon came upon a hill and from it, were able to gaze upon a large swath of forests stretched as far as the eyes could see.
Just then, the Nighteye shut and the Lightbringer opened, its first rays bathing the sight before them in a brilliant flash.
With a rare smile tugging at the corner of her lips, Nadia muttered softly. "...It’s beautiful."
