Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 116: Ambition
Chapter 116: Ambition
Atop a building overlooking a most vibrant city, Crow mask stood with his gaze pointed in a certain direction.
Ignoring the hubbub below, he kept watch over something and after a bright yellow flashed in the distance, he nodded in satisfaction.
But that didn’t mean he left immediately as he kept on watching, seemingly waiting for something.
It didn’t take long before he sighed with a hint of disbelief. "So that’s how it is."
Pausing momentarily, he continued. "... He is turning out to be more of a threat than I imagined."
"Avoid him?"
"You believe he would forget if we don’t push him further?"
"Tch, I don’t think so... His existence is not within my plans and I can’t have that."
Taking a deep breath, he added. "Since you don’t want us to take him directly, We’ll use other methods to finish the job."
His full-blown conversation with himself quickly came to an end before he turned and quietly left, acting as though nothing happened.

"Suppression?" The 1st seat raised a brow. "What do you mean?"
"Are you acting dumb or you really are clueless?" Damian spat in annoyance.
The 6th seat exploded. "How dare you act so unruly in this hall?... Do you think I won’t dare to rip out your heart this second?"
"You can try." Damian’s eyes glowered, almost like he were inviting the 6th to go ahead with his threat.
The 1st caught this, prompting him to wonder what exactly Damian was relying on to be so cheeky.
The authority of each Duke in the gathering currently was enough to smother any normal Vampire yet Damian was still okay despite receiving the full attention of all 13.
"6th!" The 1st called out. "Control yourself and allow the young man to speak."
"...Yes, leader." The 6th, albeit unwillingly, took his seat, not without glaring at Damian of course.
Chuckling lightly, Damian remarked. "I recall the fateful night 200 years ago when I shed my mortal coils to become an immortal being... to become a great Vampire just like you all."
Taking a moment to bask in the beauty of that experience, he continued. "I had always dreamt about a life where I ruled from the shadows over mankind, our supposed meat supply but the reality was drastically different from what I thought as I saw that what made us Vampires was kept under wraps in favor of conforming to human society.
"I must say... I was disappointed."
"You make it sound like we no longer feed." The other female Vampire Duke that had not yet spoken, casually responded.
"If I have to ask for permission whenever I want to eat, I’d surely grow wary of eating. Would I even get a chance to savor my meal?"
"Hmm."
"Our race has grown weaker because we have suppressed what makes us superior to the human race and now... now, our leaders are forced to hold meetings in underground palaces to make decisions. Pathetic."
"I understand your grievances, Mr. Salvatore but you must understand that all this has been done for peace to reign... to ensure the survival of our race." The 1st spoke up.
Some of the Duke’s present were surprised by his diplomacy.
According to their memory, he wasn’t the type to entertain such nonsense yet he was doing so at this very moment, and what’s more, with a newborn Vampire that had barely lived 2 centuries.
They couldn’t help but wonder what was different about Damian.
"Survival, you say?... If we continue to diminish our power like this... it won’t be long before we go extinct." Damian flatly replied.
The 1st studied him first before asking. "So is that why you convinced the 3rd to call for a meeting without my permission?"
"I didn’t just convince him... I made him realize the futility of all this." Damian said while gesturing at the hall. "If we ever want to return to the glory days of our ancestors, I believe it’s time for reform. It’s time to take back what is rightfully ours."
"And what is that exactly?"
"Ra’as. This continent was once known as the Dark Continent. I want it to reclaim that title which is why I asked for this meeting... to inquire if I would have the support of the council."
"A grand ambition, Mr. Salvatore." The 1st seat said. "But everyone can dream... few can make their dreams a reality."
Just then, the 2nd seat spoke while tapping his finger on the stone table. "The peace that has existed between our kind and mankind has helped us grow in ways we may have never thought possible. I see no reason why you would be so unhappy with the current situation. Do you wish for war, Mr. Salvatore?... Do you wish to cause chaos with your lofty talk?"
"Disgusting," Damian replied without mincing words. "And you call yourself a Duke."
"Do I not qualify as one?" The 2nd, though poised, spoke with a hint of displeasure.
"After learning about the Dark Continent, how can you be satisfied with just living?"
"Our patience grows thin, Mr. Salvatore. I see no reason why the leader had entertained you for so long but continue speaking that way and you will surely end up badly." The 7th seat spoke up as well.
It seemed the other members of the council, albeit invested, were tired of Damian’s nonsense, with some already revealing the desire to put him down.
Surprisingly though, the armored knights stationed in the hall had not moved an inch, solemnly remaining in their position while watching the proceedings.
Damian sighed. "As I have stated earlier, I have the means to reclaim this continent. This meeting is but a formality, to ensure that none of you would get in my way."
The 6th could no longer hold himself back as he exploded. "You bastard!... Do you think your actions won’t have consequences for the rest of us?... You have spoken so much about the glory days of our people but did you skip the part about the Great Purge?... Did you skip the part that said our ancestors, despite their strength, were still wiped out by the Great Families!... Do you want a repeat of that incident!?"
"Your fear disgusts me," Damian remarked. "... I have no use for those that are scared of ushering in a new future for our people."
"How dare you!" The 6th bellowed as he attacked without warning, rushing toward Damian at speeds bordering that of sound.
However, just as he came within arm’s length of Damian, the latter silently moved aside, dodging the surprise attack with an eerie calm.
The 6th was shocked.
Shocked that despite being 600 years older than Damian, the latter was faster than him.
’How?’ was the last word he mouthed before he realized his vision had tilted.
The entire room was filled with silence as shock and utter disbelief spread over the faces of everyone present, excluding the 3rd who had a knowing expression on his face.
The headless body of the 6th dropped to the ground with a dull thud before his head followed soon after.
Several seconds passed before the 1st barely managed to ask. "How did you..."
"How did I kill this ignorant fool?" Damian cut him off with a sinister smile.
Slowly nodding, the 1st waited for a response.
Damian slowly opened his shirt, revealing a blood-red glow on the left side of his chest. "You should know what this represents, no?"
