Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 107: Regrets

Chapter 107: Regrets

"I still remember how spirited you were when you first joined this unit," Ambrose said with a wry smile.

Natasha paused, taken aback by his sudden statement.

Taking a moment to regain her composure, she replied softly. "That’s not the point right now."

"Is that so?"

"Yes!"

Ambrose chuckled. "What would you have me do, Natasha?"

"Hmm?"

"Would you have me sit in this chair and continue in my position as captain after I led more than a hundred men to their deaths?"

"That..." Natasha trailed off as she understood Ambrose’s feelings.

Those Enforcers that died were also her comrades, people whom she had fought with.

Even those that had come from other cities were potential comrades that shouldn’t have had to die the way they did.

But that was the life of an Enforcer.

Living in a world that abounded with danger from all angles, each person that entered the D.O.D. knew what they were getting into.

But that did not in any way lessen their sacrifices.

Natasha pursed her lips as she slowly replied. "You aren’t the only one at fault. I also failed them as well so if anything... we should both be punished."

"You didn’t, Nat. At such a young age, you’ve had to carry so much on your shoulders. I still remember the day you joined this unit, a young girl seeking to prove her worth to her father... you have grown since that time."

"Captain..."

"Allow me to carry this alone. I have already failed this city but you are young... you have a chance to make things right."

"Sir..." Natasha’s eyes reddened as she trailed off.

"Please, Natasha. I need you to stay here." Ambrose’s solemn tone turned serious.

Noticing the change, Natasha composed herself and stood at attention. "Give me your orders, Captain."

"... Apart from Basar and the Hunter, there was a third."

"Sir?" Natasha revealed a shocked expression as she met Ambrose’s gaze.

"The Hunter also seems to think the same. I have to leave here to find him."

"But that..."

"I need you to stay here and keep me informed."

"Captain, this is dangerous!"

"I know."

"Yet..."

"I owe it to those that died!" Ambrose exploded, catching Natasha off guard.

Taking a deep breath, Ambrose calmly continued. "The third party played us all for fools and from what I’ve deduced so far... I don’t think it is over. I have to find him else what did I survive for?"

"Captain...you could die," Natasha remarked. "If this third party truly played us, then that means they would at least be on the level of Basar."

She still recalled how Basar had completely dominated Lady Ana, yet Ambrose was planning on going after him.

It was nothing short of suicide and she was sure Ambrose was aware.

Which meant that...

"You want to die." She muttered as her eyes reddened.

Ambrose sighed. "I always wondered why I survived in those tunnels. Watching people... my people die, broke me. I can no longer lead anyone... or anything."

"And so you’d rather get yourself killed?... Do you think that’s right!?"

"Maybe... maybe not. What I do know however is that I won’t be able to keep on living if I don’t figure out who the third party is and what they are after."

".... This isn’t right."

Ambrose flashed a wry smile as he met Natasha’s gaze. "You are a fine Warrior, Nat. There’s no need to burden yourself with trying to impress a man that doesn’t love you. I hope you find peace in that fact."

Gritting her teeth, Natasha turned and left the room in anger, closing the door behind her with a loud thud.

Ambrose let out another sigh as he glanced at the ceiling. "... I guess I should start preparing to hand it over."

Letting out a soft chuckle, he closed his eyes, and as he hummed a certain melody, a single tear slid down his cheek.

"Damn it!"

It was late at night with the Nighteye illuminating Eventide with its soft glow.

The sound of construction had long since died down as those in charge of it had retired for the night.

Meanwhile, in the Evergarden forest, a certain female WeaponMaster was letting out her frustrations the only way she knew how.

By swinging her sword until her wrists hurt.

"Why?... Why does he have to give up!?" Natasha questioned out loud as she swung her blade repeatedly.

The sound of a sharp blade whistling through the air echoed as she aggressively moved.

"If only I was a bit stronger!" She berated herself for being weak, for not being able to do anything but continually get beat.

"Maybe that’s why he won’t acknowledge me..." she had a complicated past, one that she wished to escape from.

Unfortunately, it was impossible to do so.

As she felt helpless to do anything, she remembered all the times she had felt that way before.

"Why can’t I do anything right!" And so she questioned her capabilities.

All that training, all that effort, yet... she was stuck.

What was the point of trying if she kept on failing?

Now she had to watch as Ambrose embarked on a suicide mission with no chance of stopping him.

"Ah!" She screamed as she pierced the ground with her switchblade.

With her head down, light whimpers echoed in the otherwise silent forest.

"...I’m sorry." She muttered softly, feeling choked by the feelings that bombarded her from all angles.

As she let out the emotions, a soft voice was heard.

"You look a mess."

She glanced at the origin to find a familiar presence.

"It’s you."

Alex, still wearing his Hunter persona, nodded. "What happened?... You look like you lost your family."

"... I... I feel lost." Natasha muttered.

She didn’t know when but her relationship with the Hunter had transformed from enemies to acquaintances, even bordering on friendship and this all happened in the space of one night.

It was difficult to fathom why she trusted him but in any case, she didn’t particularly despise the feeling.

Alex slowly approached. "Tell me about it."

"No." Natasha shook her head. "I don’t want to bore you with my problems. You have already done enough for BoneHaven."

"Well, I insist."

"...why?"

"Because learning more about a person is the first step to establishing a great relationship with them."

"You sound more human when you say stuff like that." Natasha softly chuckled.

Alex smiled underneath his mask before slowly reaching for it.

"What..."

Before Natasha could say anything, he pulled it off, revealing the face underneath.
