Chapter 637: Chapter 7 Unbelievable

"Yes."

To Chris’s surprise, the other party answered his question without hesitation.

"We met at the same movie because we both are fans of Bruce Lee. We went to see the Chinese movie ’Ip Man 4’ because it featured Bruce Lee."

Listening to her answer, Chris felt a sudden wave of dizziness.

After a long while, he then said, "Are you newlyweds?"

He remembered that movie seemed to have been released in the last few years.

"Not exactly..."

Then, she suddenly said, "Perhaps what I’m about to say will seem abrupt and strange to you, but I still want to ask. Do you... believe that ghosts exist in this world?"

Chris never anticipated such a question from her.

"Why do you ask?"

"What’s your gut feeling on this issue?"

Intuition?

Chris had never seriously considered the question.

"Ghosts, of course they don’t exist. But since you ask, it seems you have a different opinion?"

"The United States is the country with the most believers in God on this planet. If God’s existence is acceptable, why is the existence of ghosts not?"

Chris was stunned.

"Ma’am, I’m telling you clearly that ghosts do exist in this world."

Chris slowly closed the book in his hands.

"Have you ever seen a ghost? If so, you can share your story."

"Specifically... even if I told you, you wouldn’t believe it. Such matters are utterly absurd."

Chris wasn’t a particularly curious person, so since she was reluctant to elaborate, he naturally wouldn’t press her for more.

"Regardless, I thank you, ma’am."

"It’s nothing. Just a minor matter."

Then, Chris resumed reading his book.

The train continued traveling through the night.

After a while, Chris also began to feel sleepy.

For him, upon arriving in Washington tomorrow, a plethora of troubling issues still awaited him.

For him now, his marriage with his wife was beyond saving. Rationally, he knew it, but emotionally, Chris found it hard to accept.

But if things really progressed to the worst stage, the key would be the custody of his daughter.

His daughter was only five years old.

When the court decides which parent gets custody during a divorce case, it usually considers the financial situations of both parties. If conditions are equal, the tendency is to award custody to the mother. Naturally, the child’s own wishes are also taken into account.

But the current problem was... his wife wouldn’t let him see their child. She’d moved out and arranged for only the lawyer to contact him. He came to Atlanta to personally meet with an experienced divorce lawyer who was here on business, hoping to hire her personally. After all, he used to be a university professor, and even though he had temporarily lost his job because of his son’s circumstances, with his resume, as long as he could find a job quickly, the chances of winning his daughter’s custody were still considerable.

Of course, the best outcome would be not to get divorced at all.

Before marriage, Chris and his wife Anna both felt they were soulmates.

At least, that’s what Anna told Chris at the time.

They both firmly believed that only death could part them, as the wedding vows said.

The two had met because they watched the same movie, named ’Casablanca.’ In this movie, there’s a line: "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine."

They could both recite this line almost by heart. Even as a science professor, Chris deeply felt the romance of this line.

But in the end, it all ended.

Reality is so ironic and twisted. There are no poetic romances, only the bloody gore of reality.

John’s death had been several years ago, but Anna couldn’t move on. She couldn’t accept reality and ended up blaming everything on Chris.

"Ghosts... huh?"

He genuinely wished ghosts did exist.

That way, he could see his son come back to him.

He hoped everything could return to the past, maybe there was still time to better educate him, to prevent him from getting into drugs, from leaving home to hang out with junkies in rebellion, which led him to this state.

Suddenly, he put down the book.

"Ma’am. Are you asleep?"

"I’m not," she immediately replied, "I haven’t slept."

"You were talking to me about ghosts... right? Can you tell me more specifically?"

Chris caught himself halfway through, feeling that he might be being rather abrupt.

But even feeling abrupt, he wanted to finish what he was saying.

He didn’t know what the point was of what he was doing right now.

Hearing this, the other party showed a hesitant expression.

"Forget what I said just now..."

"I..."

For a moment, the atmosphere fell into an awkward silence.

Chris was about to say "Alright then," but suddenly, the other person began to speak.

"Never mind, I’ll tell you. After all, I can’t find anyone else to confide in."

"Okay..."

Chris could see that she was filled with sorrow.

"My name is Melody... I’m going to Washington, D.C., to see my husband Alex. But, I know very well that I won’t be able to meet him."

"What?"

About fifteen minutes later.

After listening to Melody’s story, Chris gazed at her, utterly unable to believe his ears.

"You’re joking with me, right???"

At that moment, his expression was the epitome of confusion.

"Ma’am, with all due respect, this is rather..."

"Which part don’t you believe? The part about ghosts, or the part about the Supernatural Hospital curing a curse?"

"Even if I believe in God, it’s hard for me to believe there’s a Supernatural Hospital..."

"See, even if I tell you, you wouldn’t believe my words, would you?"

This made Chris feel somewhat embarrassed. But he really couldn’t believe her.

"Sorry, I, I’ll step out for a smoke."

He left his seat and walked towards the back of the carriage.

Upon reaching a secluded corner, he pulled out a cigarette and lit it quickly.

Somehow, he felt that the woman named Melody didn’t seem to be lying.

Her expression, her tone... it all seemed truthful.

But the words she spoke were fantastical, hard to believe.

"How could there possibly be ghosts in this world... strange..."

Suddenly, he noticed his cigarette inexplicably went out.

Chris froze.

A chilling feeling began creeping up his back...
