Chapter 631: Chapter 1: The Couple Who Couldn’t Meet
Today was the third day after the surgery had ended.
For Alex, the discharge came earlier than he had expected.
The cost of the surgery, however, was that he had to assume a whopping ninety thousand Dark Soul Points. Dark Soul Points meant that unpredictable misfortune would befall his future—a misfortune of uncertain nature and with potentially great impact on his life.
Returning home, Alex felt somewhat chilly.
Yes...
Home.
The one he had bought in Philadelphia, intending to live with his wife, Melody.
But now...
At that moment, a spotted dog ran up to Alex’s trouser leg, rubbing against him incessantly.
This was Bodie, the pet dog he and Melody had bought while strolling through a pet shop together.
His hand stroked Bodie’s head.
In truth, Alex didn’t like cats or dogs much; he found that taking care of pets was just too time-consuming. Especially for him, working as a screenwriter, it was nothing but a hassle.
Just then, Alex’s phone rang.
He glanced at the screen; the caller was his colleague, Tom.
He picked up the phone and dialed.
"Hello, Tom?"
"Alex, you said you were going for thyroid surgery. Are you better now?"
"Yeah, I’m pretty much okay now."
He and Tom were part of the same screenwriting studio, typically taking on script jobs for major Hollywood companies. In the United States, however, screenwriters were treated terribly, which was why writers’ strikes erupted from time to time. Hard work on a script didn’t always mean getting credit for it.
"That’s great. ’Kaiju’ will have its premiere in Washington the day after tomorrow. It’s the first film you have the main screenwriting credit for, have you received the electronic ticket on your phone?"
"Yes, I’ve got it."
"You’ll be able to make it, won’t you?"
"Come, of course, I’ll come."
"Kaiju" was a science fiction script that Alex had honed for many years. In the increasingly politically correct madness of Hollywood, it was rare to have a film where both the male and female leads were blonde, blue-eyed heterosexual heartthrobs, played by big stars no less. That the script had caught the attention of a film company and was made into a movie was no small feat.
Now, as the movie entered its promotional phase, the company, flush with funds, plastered "Kaiju" posters in subways, shopping centers, and bus stations.
After the call with Tom, Alex’s expression couldn’t help but darken.
He had been implanted with a Cursed Object from the latest research by 666 Hospital.
A Cursed Object that, allegedly, employed a "Corpse Curse Technique."
Dr. Green’s explanation was quite complex; Alex hadn’t really understood it. However, implanting this Cursed Object was highly dangerous for him, but regardless, it was something he had to do.
If not, he would never see his wife, Melody, and their daughter again.
His situation with his wife, if told to the average person, was unbelievable. In fact, a lot of things wouldn’t be believable to Alex either if he hadn’t experienced them personally.
But all of it was the truth.
He and Melody—one lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; the other, in Atlanta, Georgia. From Philadelphia to Atlanta, the distance was a full twelve hundred kilometers. Since they met, they had been in a strenuous long-distance relationship, right through to their marriage.
But then... just after they registered their marriage, suddenly, from one day to the next, they couldn’t see each other.
Yes.
Couldn’t see each other.
Not to mention a face-to-face meeting—even trying to glimpse each other through a video call was impossible.
Some eerie power, like a curse, was preventing him from seeing Melody.
Alex had spoken of his experiences to those around him.
But no one believed him. The distance between Philadelphia and Atlanta was somewhat far, but if they wanted to see each other, why wouldn’t it be possible? Many people thought it was just some April Fool’s Day joke.
Alex leaned back slightly.
He now had no choice.
He could only gamble on this chance to see Melody and their daughter.
He knew from the start that this long-distance relationship would be challenging. However, he and Melody had persisted. Though they had always taken precautions, they weren’t careful enough, and Melody became pregnant.
Since she was carrying his child, Alex naturally wanted to start a family with her as soon as possible.
That was when he planned to buy a house in Philadelphia.
Alex wasn’t a Philadelphia native; he came from New Jersey, situated to the east of Pennsylvania, and had traveled early on to Philadelphia. Pennsylvania and New Jersey were separated by just a river, and Philadelphia was a city with a long history in the United States. When the nation was founded, Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence in Independence Hall, Philadelphia, which remained the capital of the United States until the 19th century. The first time Alex visited Philadelphia, it was to attend the Philadelphia Film Festival. That experience sparked his desire to become a screenwriter.
At first, Alex felt that God had favored him. Just as Melody got pregnant, a film company showed interest in his "Kaiju" screenplay and decided to fund and shoot the movie, and the hefty salary finally allowed him to buy a house in Philadelphia, where he could live with Melody from then on.
But now...
He and Melody were separated, unable to see each other in Philadelphia and Atlanta.
If he tried to go to Atlanta to see Melody, all sorts of bizarre incidents would happen.
His car would break down without reason; buses would get into accidents...
The most extreme incident involved a tornado; he could say he was lucky to have survived.
In short, anytime he tried to visit Melody, horrible situations would arise. And if Melody tried to come to him, it was the same.
He was close to losing all hope.
He had tried all means except by plane and still couldn’t get to Atlanta.
If he chose to fly, he feared he would straight into a plane crash.
And he was very certain that all these events were due to a curse.
Until the business card of Dr. Green from the Dark Demon Surgery at 666 Hospital appeared before him.
After telling Dr. Green everything, Alex said, "I can be sure, some evil spirit is preventing me from seeing Melody."
"Give me the details?"
"I have seen it. It was when I was driving to Georgia alone. I drove at a very slow speed to ensure I wouldn’t get into an accident. Then, at a gas station, when I stopped to refuel, I saw it..."
Dr. Green’s expression grew considerably grave after hearing Alex’s story.
"I have been practicing medicine for many years, and this is the first time I’ve encountered a case like yours..."
At that moment, Alex’s phone rang again.
This time, it was Dr. Green calling.
"Dr. Green, hello?"
"Hello. Your plan is to meet your wife and daughter at the film premiere in Washington, D.C., the day after tomorrow, correct?"
"Yes... I’ve sent them the electronic ticket. But, I don’t know if we will be able to see each other this time."
"The Dr. Dai Lin I mentioned to you before will soon take over as the head of the Purgatory Surgery. I’d like him to meet you; he carries a Spatial Curse Item, which allows him to directly come to Philadelphia. He has agreed to personally escort you to Washington, D.C."
"Personally... escort me?"
Alex was taken aback by such a favor.
"Yes. I will send you Dr. Dai’s information in a moment. You go meet him later. He will roughly appear three kilometers away from you, and the Cursed Object in your body will automatically attract the Spatial Curse Item in his body."
"Okay, alright! I’ll personally treat Dr. Dai to dinner tonight!"
Philadelphia and Washington weren’t too far apart, but his situation was too special; he dared not use any means of transportation. With a department head personally escorting him from Philadelphia to Washington, he had enough confidence!
