Hospital 444 -
Chapter 44 - 16: The Soul
Chapter 44: Chapter 16: The Soul
But Dai Lin was still exploring, what exactly had changed in his eyes?
Just then, he suddenly noticed a fly had settled on the fingertip of his right index finger.
Initially, Dai Lin wanted to wave the fly away, but suddenly he had an idea, looked closely at the fly, and closed his right eye.
At that moment, the fly in his sight began to expand infinitely... Dai Lin could now clearly see every vein on the fly’s wings.
He could distinctly see that while the fly settled on his fingertip, it was rubbing its front legs together.
This was a female fly. Female flies attract males for mating activities by rubbing their hands together.
Then, he could also clearly see a spot of white residue on the fly’s mouthparts, not knowing what kind of rubbish it was.
At that moment, his disgust for the fly caused a bloody red hue to emerge in his left eye’s view. Soon after, this bloody red hue enveloped the fly’s body and completely locked onto it.
The next moment, he could clearly see a white mass being pulled out from inside the fly’s body!
The white mass, completely covered by the bloody red hue, was eventually engulfed entirely!
The fly just dropped down.
Never showing any sign of life again!
At this moment, Dai Lin was also quite shocked, what he just saw, that white thing...
"The soul!"
Without a doubt, humans possess souls.
At least Hospital 444 had thoroughly proven that.
The soul is the foundation of human life; all curses target the soul level, hence the surgeries at Hospital 444 were all about operating on the soul. Only by removing the curse that has affected the soul could they save the patient, of course, subsequent treatments were another matter.
Dai Lin began to realize, his right eye, through devouring and sealing ghosts, strengthened his left eye’s detection and even attack capabilities.
Then, would this ability also be effective against humans? If so, couldn’t he easily kill humans with just his eyes?
Of course, for every Paranormal Doctor, killing someone without God or ghost knowing was not difficult. After all, the curses within cursed objects existed to kill humans.
However, as a doctor, having the ability to easily kill was leaving Dai Lin with mixed feelings.
He hesitated to look at Jiang Lan, fearing that he wouldn’t be able to control this power and would harm her.
Just now, killing that fly was absurdly easy. He didn’t know if killing a person would be just as effortless.
Wait a minute...
The existence of cursed objects was to counter curses.
If he could master this power, then perhaps against ghosts, he could utilize the same method?
Souls belonged to spiritual entities, and ghosts were also a type of spiritual entity.
Or to say... they were a kind of enhanced version of spiritual entities.
Maybe he could experiment and see.
While he was thinking about this, he continued to look outside the window.
At the moment, he was observing a tall building next to the overpass.
Dai Lin locked his gaze onto one of the windows of the tall building.
As he concentrated, he could clearly see inside the window.
Fortunately, there was nobody inside.
He could clearly make out the interior furnishings, the furniture!
These eyes could even evolve to be like telescopes!
But from such a distance, it was impossible to see if there were any flies inside, and even if he could see them, he probably couldn’t kill a fly from such a long distance.
Then, he saw a flock of birds suddenly fly across the sky.
Perfect, he could give it a try!
So, he gazed into the sky, watching the flock of birds.
A crimson flush began to cover his eyes, but though he could see the birds clearly high above, he was unable to pull out their souls to devour them and thus kill the birds.
Indeed... there were still distance limitations!
"Dr. Dai,"
"Yes?"
Dai Lin withdrew his gaze, turning to look at Jiang Lan beside him.
"How did you... become a doctor at this hospital? Did you, like other doctors, commit to studying medicine before working here?"
The director didn’t seem to mind the doctors revealing the hospital’s secrets to anyone, as it appeared the director had the ability to prevent anyone outside of the doctors and patients from believing in the hospital’s existence.
So, speaking or not, either was fine.
"Sorry, that question, I’m not at liberty to answer."
"Okay, I apologize, Dr. Dai."
Dai Lin didn’t want Jiang Lan to know too much about the hospital, nobody knew what could happen to those who got too entangled with the hospital.
But, committing to study medicine...
The reason he studied medicine was because...
Suddenly, his phone rang.
Dai Lin looked at his phone; it was a call from his mother.
He let out a wry smile and answered the phone.
"Hello, Dai Lin, we went to the hospital and asked, your department head said you submitted a resignation letter! Are you crazy? Have you forgotten why you wanted to study medicine in the first place? Come back immediately, the hospital administration said they haven’t approved your resignation yet, doctors are on career track, you can’t just hand in a resignation letter and leave like that!"
"Mom, I..." Dai Lin knew that now he could only lie: "I’ve switched to working at a private hospital outside. Actually, I had been approached by them previously."
Somehow that wasn’t entirely a lie, Hospital 444 surely wasn’t a public hospital.
"Private hospital? Such an important decision to switch jobs, and you didn’t tell me? Haven’t you been promoted to associate chief physician for less than a year? And now you’re switching?"
"Sorry, mom, I’m still at work, I’ll contact you later."
"Hello, Dai Lin, Dai Lin..."
Dai Lin hung up his mother’s call just like that.
His head leaned back slightly, this should suffice for now.
The director would soon influence their thoughts, they would not continue to inquire about the private hospital he switched to, nor would anyone come to verify it.
Why study medicine initially?
Dai Lin’s memories went back to his high school days.
As someone who had skipped grades and entered high school earlier than others, Dai Lin had always buried his head in his books, rarely interacting with other students.
Back then, everyone thought Dai Lin was aloof, not realizing that he just wanted to dedicate all his time to studying as much as possible. Although many considered him a genius, only Dai Lin knew that he relied more on his own strenuous efforts, as well as his stronger perseverance and self-discipline than ordinary people.
That day, the homeroom teacher read two essays in class. One of them was written by Dai Lin.
"Essay title: My Dream. My dream is to become a doctor who saves lives and heals the wounded..."
That essay had received high praise from the language teacher at the time.
Only Dai Lin himself knew that the content of that essay was entirely false, not containing a single shred of genuine emotion.
