Chapter 369: Chapter 22 Disappearance

"Can you still sense the location of Shadow Manor now?"

"I can still sense it," Dai Lin replied, his connection to Shadow Manor remaining, "but something doesn’t feel quite right. Logically, the closer I get, the stronger the sensation should be, but..."

At this point, Dai Lin suddenly realized a problem.

"Considering that we completely share memory and consciousness, why do you even need to ask me?"

If Dai Lin’s English wasn’t sufficient, Milan, who was proficient in many languages, could thoroughly examine all of Dai Lin’s consciousness and memories without missing a thing.

"I generally don’t go around reading your memories and consciousness for no reason," Milan said. "Unlike you, I need a subjective willingness to access your memories. You passively receive that information. There should be some boundaries between people; otherwise, our interactions could become quite awkward."

Upon hearing Milan say this, Dai Lin let out a great sigh of relief and immediately felt a surge of fondness for her.

After all, to have every single private detail of one’s life from childhood known completely by a member of the opposite sex they hadn’t known for long—and to be with that person 24 hours a day—would be incredibly socially fatal. Therefore, the relationship between Dai Lin and Milan had always been a bit awkward.

"Let’s get back to the issue you were talking about. You just said ’but,’" Milan prompted.

"Right. But in my sensing, even as we get closer, the sensations fluctuate in strength. Often, I feel as if I can’t sense it at all. I think that’s why the Paranormal Doctor can’t directly enter Shadow Manor. What would happen if I were to go there?"

Infiltrating Shadow Manor wouldn’t be difficult, as Devil’s Eye now possessed powers similar to that of the Black Blood Matriarch and could easily alter others’ perceptions. However, if they couldn’t even get in, rescuing the children and Teacher Lin inside would be out of the question.

For Dai Lin, this rescue mission held too many variables and dangers. So it was completely understandable for Milan to have hesitations and anxieties about this operation.

After a moment of thought, Milan said, "Space... Your hospital’s research on curses related to space is quite behind."

"Conquering this issue has always been a tough challenge for the Curses Department. Fang Zhou is already the top doctor at Hospital 444 capable of space travel. Ultimately, many of our treatment methods are still under research."

Research was just a euphemistic term—in plainer language, they were blindly groping along.

Watching the rain outside, Milan suggested, "Let’s use tonight’s rest to discuss a few issues we need to be aware of in our upcoming actions. This is a decision I’ve made after careful consideration."

"Okay, go ahead," Dai Lin said, trying his best not to actively sense Milan’s predominantly English thoughts.

"We’re going on a rescue mission, not to fight. Do you understand what I mean?"

Milan was very serious.

"I understand, but if we really enter, it might be unavoidable to..."

"If that ’unavoidable’ situation arises, we will retreat immediately," Milan said. Then, raising a hand and pointing at Dai Lin’s eyes, she added, "You and I currently only have the capability to rescue. If we conflict with whatever is hidden within that manor, we’re certain to meet a miserable end. I agreed to this rescue mission with you on the premise that we can fight if necessary and retreat if we choose. Without this condition, going there now would be tantamount to suicide."

Milan was once a department head, and despite ascending to that position through her family lineage, she had her fair share of real skills. The fact that she would even mention "suicide" revealed a clear enough message.

In truth, Milan didn’t know what awaited her in Shadow Manor. But, combining what Lin Sunzhu had said with her own clinical experience, she could make some guesses.

Lin Sunzhu was still savable—for now. But if things continued this way, it’d likely become impossible to rescue her.

While Dai Lin’s priority was to save people, Milan’s was to ensure Dai Lin’s eye grew stronger during this process. Now that their fates were tied together, she would support Dai Lin unconditionally.

"You should get some sleep. The rain will stop before dawn," Milan suggested. "Even though we don’t need to sleep, resting can help clear the mind."

"What about you?"

"I don’t need to sleep," Milan replied, crossing her arms and walking to the window to look outside. "We can’t both be asleep at the same time, can we?"

"That won’t do; let me stand watch."

"Were you just thinking, ’I’m a man; I can’t let a woman stay up all night,’ right? Don’t worry. I am a Paranormal Doctor, the last of the Dalen Family lineage."

The rain continued to pour.

Yet, neither Dai Lin nor Milan fell asleep.

Even if Dai Lin wanted to sleep, his mind was completely preoccupied at the moment.

"Alright then, I’ll go take a shower first. I’ve already placed a change of clothes for you in the space of your right eye; you can bring them to me later."

"Huh? I should come to the bathroom to give them to you?" Dai Lin thought, You’re not going to do anything with me, so can’t you stop teasing me like this every time? I’m a normal adult male, hello!

If this were an online novel, it wouldn’t just be about getting scolded by the readers; it’d be about the Chapters getting a 404 error!

"What is that look for? If your eyes really want to see, do you need to come to the bathroom to do so?" Milan seemed totally unconcerned. "Alright, just bring them over later."

"..."

That night.

The two eventually lay in a double bed, naturally maintaining a distance from each other.

As time passed, Dai Lin continued to sense the location of Shadow Manor.

It seemed elusive, often making him feel somewhat unreal; yet sometimes, it was so intense he couldn’t ignore it.

"Milan."

"Speak, I’m not asleep."

"I’ve been thinking about something... Butler Qin is obviously aware of Lin Sunzhu’s connection with us, but he only warned her instead of destroying the curse on her. He seems truly convinced that we won’t dare to go back there. Is he really underestimating us to that extent? Isn’t he afraid his methods of warning will provoke us instead?"

"Do you really think that?"

"There are two possibilities. First, he might just be bluffing, a paper tiger at heart. Second, he’s truly formidable, willing to risk angering us with his warnings. So, my thought is that we..."

Dai Lin turned to look at Milan as he spoke.

But in that moment, he froze completely.

Because, next to him, there was no one at all!
