Chapter 323: Chapter 10 Making a Pact with the Demon
Jiang Licheng wrote down this line on the paper.
"Let me know Liang Luanxu’s whereabouts."
Never had Jiang Licheng thought to penalize Liang Luanxu through legal means.
As a Paranormal Doctor, he had plenty of ways to make a person’s life worse than death. So why should he allow the murderer of his daughter to comfortably undergo trial after trial, perhaps even ending up with a suspended death sentence, spending the remainder of their life in prison? Even if a death sentence was given, to end her so abruptly in an instant would let her off too easily.
In many people’s eyes, Jiang Licheng was an outstanding doctor with impeccable medical skills and ethics. In the established mindset of many, a good doctor only saves lives, never takes them. Before his daughter’s death, Jiang Licheng thought he was such a person, but when something actually happens, feelings can be completely different.
At that time, he had not broken ties with Feng Xiao.
Back then, he wasn’t the deputy director but a full-time Curse Object Department Doctor at the hospital’s outpatient building.
This plan was executed by him and Feng Xiao together.
It was a secret between the two of them.
Only Meng Hua knew what specifically transpired between them. Although she was Jiang Licheng’s best student, she did not approve of Jiang Licheng’s plan for revenge.
She once urged Jiang Licheng to let the police investigate the case and leave it to the courts, but Jiang Licheng stubbornly refused to change his mind.
"I will absolutely not allow Liang Luanxu to die so easily, I want her to live a life worse than death!"
"Teacher, you’re not going to use cursed objects... those are for treating our patients!"
"I will buy cursed objects with Spiritual Therapy Points, I’ve saved up enough of them. The dean has never forbidden us from acquiring cursed objects for purposes other than medical treatment."
"Teacher..." Meng Hua still wanted to persuade him, "Continuing like this, you will suffer greatly. And using cursed objects... if something goes wrong, resulting in the curse breaking free from the object’s binding..."
"With Feng Xiao’s help, such a situation won’t happen. My revenge won’t harm the innocent. Meng Hua, I have always done my best for any patient, to help them recover to the best of my ability. I’ve saved so many people, yet couldn’t save my own daughter, I can’t bear this. Meng Hua, I can completely understand if you don’t want to help me, but please, don’t obstruct me and don’t tell anyone about this."
Now... Meng Hua had fallen into an unresponsive coma. Only he and Feng Xiao knew about this matter.
He had considered resurrecting his daughter, but just then, he thought of that classic horror story "The Monkey’s Paw."
He had read this story before and even suspected that it wasn’t entirely a work of fiction; the so-called monkey’s paw was clearly something like a special cursed object. In the story, the male lead received a monkey’s paw that originated in India, which could grant any three wishes.
The male lead’s first wish was to receive a large sum of money, but the result was his son’s death, leading to a payout from a life insurance policy. This outcome plunged the couple into despair, so the man used the monkey’s paw to make a second wish, to bring his dead son back to life.
However, from the conclusion of the story, it appears that his son was not revived in the normal sense, but rather seemed to have returned as something akin to a Resentful Spirit. In the tale, the son knocked on the door of the protagonist’s home at night but remained silent the entire time.
This could not possibly be a mere ghost; if it were, not only would it be impossible to be locked outside by a door, it also certainly wouldn’t frighten parents who had just lost their child. A freshly deceased ghost would still possess some rationality. For a ghost that had died many years prior, however, such behavior could not be ruled out.
If his daughter could come back, even if only as a ghost, he might accept it. But absolutely not as a Resentful Spirit. Without saying anything more, a Resentful Spirit’s arrival in the world of the living only brings curses and death, nothing else. Even a ghost, if it remains in the world of the living, will eventually become a Resentful Spirit.
So, after much consideration, he decided to fulfill this wish first, to find Liang Luanxu.
Then, carry out his revenge.
With Feng Xiao protecting her, Jiang Licheng knew he probably couldn’t seek revenge through normal means. Others might not understand the depth of Feng Xiao’s abilities, but he was fully aware; this man might very well be the true number one under the three deputy deans.
After the revenge was over, he could then attempt to resurrect his daughter.
By then, even if she returned as a Resentful Spirit or even a malicious ghost, or if he had to pay some greater price, at least the current him would have no more worries.
Of course, he wouldn’t wish directly for Liang Luanxu’s death. For revenge, he had to do it himself.
He then stuffed the letter back into the envelope.
He had not considered tracking the balloon because he knew it would be futile. The actions he was taking now could be likened to trying to grab chestnuts out of the fire.
...
Dai Lin was still reading a book inside the villa at the time.
He had fully confirmed one thing.
Feng Xiao, the man, was far more powerful than he had imagined.
Dai Lin himself already possessed terrifyingly formidable strength, having killed a Demon Department doctor. But Feng Xiao was completely different. Although he was nominally the deputy director, he absolutely had the power on par with, or possibly even surpassing, that of other department heads.
Feng Xiao had also subtly demonstrated this in front of Dai Lin more than once. He seemed not at all worried that Dai Lin might discover his true identity.
It was precisely because of this that Dai Lin was highly vigilant towards Feng Xiao.
When someone’s strength far exceeds one’s own, it also means they have the power over life and death. Under such circumstances, Dai Lin naturally maintained a strong sense of caution around Feng Xiao.
He had to consider a question: If one day, Feng Xiao showed his fangs and decided to kill him, what should he do?
Without a doubt, if it came to a direct confrontation, Dai Lin stood no chance against him.
The most critical thing was that Dai Lin knew an important "secret" of Feng Xiao. Given this, was it possible he would eliminate Dai Lin to silence him?
Liang Luanxu, that woman, seemed to exhibit signs of mental instability. It was very odd why Feng Xiao would keep a woman with such issues in this villa and, repeatedly insist that Dai Lin promise not to disclose it.
Dai Lin had some recollection of the case from the year Liang Luanxu became a wanted criminal. However, being a doctor, he was too busy, so he only knew that Liang Luanxu had been wanted for killing another woman. Initially, it seemed like an ordinary case, but what made it unusual was the exceptionally brutal manner in which the perpetrator murdered—apparently, the victim was horrifically... dismembered. And Dai Lin remembered seeing Liang Luanxu’s wanted photo; such an inhumane killer was typically male, but Liang Luanxu was a young woman with a beautiful visage.
Such a callous murderer on the run caused quite a stir on the internet at the time. And to this day, the criminal had not been captured.
Times have changed, and now, in a society riddled with surveillance, it’s very difficult for fugitives to completely hide. Liang Luanxu’s continued evasion of capture was evidently because Feng Xiao was harboring her. For a Paranormal Doctor, hiding a criminal was not difficult.
But why would Feng Xiao do this? Or rather, was it not harboring, but imprisonment?
What would be the purpose of imprisoning a murderer? What benefit could it bring him?
This might be the only vulnerability of Feng Xiao that he could exploit. In case Feng Xiao truly decided to act against him, Liang Luanxu might become his only point of breakthrough.
"’Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’?"
Dai Lin was shocked and then realized that Feng Xiao was actually standing behind him!
"Director Feng, when did you...?"
"I’ve been here for half an hour."
"Impossible!" Dai Lin shook his head desperately: "You couldn’t have possibly..."
Feng Xiao suddenly took "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" from his hands. It was an English original edition.
"Impressive, Dr. Dai, you can read books in English," Feng Xiao said as he looked at the book Dai Lin was reading: "Is this your first time?"
"Yes, first time. I’ve been too busy in the past, and I only watched up to the third movie..."
"Do you like it?"
"It’s, it’s okay..."
"Share your thoughts, how does it feel?"
Dai Lin could only go along with Feng Xiao for the time being: "Although I knew from before that Voldemort is a half-blood of a witch and a Muggle. Voldemort’s mother used a love potion on his father to make him fall in love with her, resulting in Voldemort’s birth. What’s the point of love forced by magic? I think Voldemort turning into the villain later on was related to his background."
Feng Xiao looked at the book and said, "Voldemort, just a demon twisted by a lack of love. I don’t have a bit of sympathy for him."
Then he looked at Dai Lin and said, "After all, it’s the essence of a fairy tale. In reality, don’t believe that the power of love can defeat evil, Dr. Dai."
