Chapter 129: Chapter 6 Nightmare
"Yun Lan’s mobile phone was being charged beside the bed, so I couldn’t call to find her.
I kept searching until around 4:15 in the morning, but I never found her inside the villa. Just when I was worried sick and returned to the bedroom, I actually saw Yun Lan lying on the bed!
What happened?
I hurriedly woke her up. With her sleepy look, it seemed as if she had been sleeping there all along.
I asked her where she had just been.
She looked groggy and said that in her dream, she had been searching for the bathroom in the villa all along, and she might have gone to the restroom in a daze and then come back to sleep, thinking it was all a dream.
But I said, I had looked for her in the restroom, right?
Yun Lan quickly said that she probably went to the restroom on the third floor in a half-asleep state.
I started by going downstairs to look for her first, didn’t find her, then came back to the second floor, and finally the third. If what Yun Lan said is true, then afterward she would have returned to the bedroom, and indeed that could be plausible.
But something felt off to me. She got up to use the bathroom in a daze and then fell asleep again? Couldn’t distinguish between reality and dreams?
However, this seemed like the most reasonable explanation. It was raining heavily outside; if she had really gone out, even if she had used an umbrella, she would have surely gotten wet."
Jin Yunran felt more and more that something was not right.
Could it be that her brother-in-law had been writing the diary like it was a novel?
However, the police must have seen this diary entry.
They must have verified the contents with my sister. She must have told the police what she actually did on that day. But whether she truly went to the restroom in the early hours of the morning or did something else, of course, the police would be unable to confirm.
The diary... had my sister’s in-laws seen it?
They should have, shouldn’t they? If they had indeed read it, knowing her mother-in-law’s character, she surely would have pressed my sister for answers.
Was that the reason for the look her mother-in-law gave her at the memorial service?
Did she say many harsh words to my sister?
Jin Yunran turned to the next diary entry.
However, the subsequent entries didn’t contain any abnormalities and were mostly normal content.
Until September 19, the forged diary entries began.
The forged entries continued for over a month!
Who would do such a heartless thing? Making a joke of the dead?
Jin Yunran read again the September 19 entry that shouldn’t have existed.
She noticed the line written on it—
I keep feeling as if a pair of eyes is watching me.
"Recently"?
From when did it start?
From the day my sister brought home that paper bag?
But then, Jin Yunran suddenly realized, this was clearly a forged diary, so why was she still pondering the logic of it?
"What am I thinking about..."
Continuing.
Jin Yunran began to consider a question.
Why would someone forge her brother-in-law’s diary?
Deliberately imitating his handwriting so precisely that even the writing style seemed very close.
Truth be told...
If the one faking the diary was her sister herself, she could somewhat understand. She couldn’t accept her brother-in-law’s death in her heart, so she imitated his handwriting and continued the diary... but just now, she couldn’t have arrived in the study earlier than me to write the latest entry and then leave only to come back around behind me.
Jin Yunran continued to read the diary entry for September 20.
"September 20 Clear
I actually slept in the study all night.
I had agreed with Yun Lan that after finishing work, I would go straight back to the bedroom.
Last night, how I fell asleep in the study is something I cannot completely recall.
Yesterday evening, after I finished writing in the diary, I thought I could go back, and after that... I turned my head...
What happened after that, I don’t remember.
I clearly didn’t drink any alcohol, but why does it feel as if I blacked out?
But thinking back, last night, when I stood up after writing in the diary and turned around... I think I saw something very terrifying.
It must have been a misperception.
Have I been a little too jittery lately?"
What followed was a list of trivial matters for the day.
Jin Yunran was completely confused.
She felt like she wasn’t reading a diary, but rather a novel by Stephen King. The content was bizarre no matter how you looked at it.
The police believe that her brother-in-law died from heart paralysis caused by excessive fright.
Considering the contents of the diary, one couldn’t help but shudder with extreme fear.
What on earth was the person who forged the diary thinking? Did they really want to scare someone to death?
As she read on, she felt more and more that the diary really seemed like it was written by her brother-in-law.
This eerie feeling made her heart grow more and more apprehensive as she continued to read.
After reading the entire diary... she looked up and realized it was already past eleven o’clock.
She placed the diary inside the drawer of the bedside table.
"I’d better not tell my sister for now... She can’t handle any shocks at the moment. I need to find out who wrote this diary..."
Just as she was about to turn off the bedside lamp, her hand trembled inexplicably.
If she turned off the lamp, the room would plunge into darkness.
Jin Yunran hesitated for a moment.
In the end, she scoffed at herself. Did she really believe in something as absurd as a ghost’s unfinished business?
Then, she switched off the lamp and immediately pulled the blanket over her head to sleep.
However, the contents of the diary kept whirling in her head, making her feel overwhelmed with myriad thoughts...
Especially the part about her sister disappearing in the middle of the night.
Jin Yunran pondered and pondered... She didn’t know how much time had passed before she finally fell asleep.
She had a very long dream.
In the dream, she saw her deceased parents.
And her sister and brother-in-law too.
In the dream...
Her sister was walking alone in the dark villa, while a torrential rain poured outside the window.
And she was following right behind her sister.
Where was her sister going?
Suddenly, a flash of lightning streaked across the sky, and then she saw her brother-in-law staring at her sister from outside the window!
This startling vision jolted Jin Yunran awake.
After opening her eyes in the darkness...
Her sister Yun Lan’s face was right there, facing her!
"Ah!"
Jin Yunran was so frightened that she jumped out of bed and then, losing her balance, crashed onto the floor.
"Yun Ran?"
Yun Lan immediately turned on the bedside lamp, and looking at Jin Yunran, she said, "Don’t be scared, it’s me!"
"Sister, why are you... in this room?" Jin Yunran asked in terror, looking at Yun Lan, "Aren’t you supposed to be staying with Yunyi?"
Yun Lan then said, "Yunyi noticed that I wanted to sleep with you. He said that it was fine for him to sleep alone and told me to spend the night with you. When I came to your room, you were already asleep."
Jin Yunran, still unsettled, looked at her sister and said, "Sister... you... scared me to death..."
"It’s my fault, I scared you."
Jin Yunran glanced at the clock.
It was past one in the morning.
"Well then... Sister, let’s go to sleep for now."
"Okay."
After getting back into bed and turning off the bedside lamp, Jin Yunran looked at Yun Lan next to her. The nightmare from just before was still vivid in her mind.
"Sister..."
"What’s wrong, Yun Ran?"
Jin Yunran bit her lip, turned over, and with her back to her sister, she asked, "You said before... you felt as if my brother-in-law was still with you and Yunyi, didn’t you?"
Jin Yunran didn’t know why she asked this question.
Wasn’t it just a question that would make her sister even more heartbroken?
"Forget it, Sister, just pretend I didn’t say anything! I misspoke..."
"Yun Ran," Yun Lan continued to say, "It’s just that I miss your brother-in-law too much. To this day, I find it incredibly hard to accept that he has left this world."
Jin Yunran gripped the blanket tighter.
"We had planned, this Halloween night, to celebrate the seventh anniversary of our acquaintance. Seven years... Many people talk about the seven-year itch, but throughout the years of our marriage, it’s always felt like we were newlyweds."
Jin Yunran could hear a hint of choking in her sister’s voice.
"Yun Ran, I’ve been thinking... stay here till Halloween night. That day, celebrate with us. After all, it’s equivalent to the Western Ghost Festival, isn’t it?"
Yes, that’s it.
Jin Yunran realized, Halloween night... was just six days away!
