Chapter 946 - 946: Story 946: The Forsaken Threshold
The Forsaken Girl stepped through the gate, and the world shuddered. The bones that held it together groaned, as if something ancient stirred within. For a heartbeat, there was silence—an unnatural stillness, thick with dread. Then, the gate swung open, revealing a void of shifting shadows and hunger.
Mira gasped as the air pulled at her, trying to drag her forward. Draven dug his heels in, gripping her arm before she could be taken.
"She's in there!" Mira cried. "We can't let her go alone!"
Elias flicked open his lighter, the flame twisting unnaturally, casting shadows that moved without him. "This ain't a place you just walk into and come back." His voice was tight. "She was the price."
Zara glared at him. "Screw that. We didn't come all this way to let a kid be sacrificed."
But then, from the other side of the gate… the screaming began.
It wasn't the girl's voice. It was many voices, twisted together in a sound not meant for human ears. The darkness within rippled, and something stepped out.
Not the Forsaken Girl.
The figure was tall, wrapped in tattered robes that bled into the ground. Its face was hidden beneath a mask of bone, its arms elongated, fingers ending in claws that dripped with shadow. And from beneath its mask, a whispering chorus spilled out—a thousand souls speaking in unison.
"You have come too far."
Draven didn't hesitate. He fired. The shotgun blast hit nothing. The figure dissolved, reforming instantly.
Elias took a step back. "Well, that ain't fair."
The figure raised one hand. The gate slammed shut behind it, locking them out.
Mira's heart pounded. "Where is she?"
The whispering figure tilted its head. The Forsaken Girl's voice emerged from its depths.
"Gone."
The shadows at its feet twisted, and the bones of the dead rose once more—this time, not as the whispering dead, but as something else entirely. Their skulls elongated, their fingers became sharpened bone, and their joints cracked unnaturally as they turned toward the survivors.
Draven reloaded. "I'm getting real tired of this."
Zara gritted her teeth. "We get through this thing, we find the girl."
The whispering figure did not move, but its presence grew heavier, pressing against them like a weight in their chests. The sky darkened, the moon above splitting open to reveal a massive, watching eye.
The ground cracked. The air turned to rot.
And then, the thing in the mask reached for them.
The battle for the Forsaken Girl's soul had begun.
