Chapter 827 - 827: Story 827: The Hunger Below
The flames raged, swallowing the tunnel in a howling inferno, but the laughter… it didn't stop.
The Maw was still alive.
Mia, Lucas, and Evelyn scrambled through the collapsed tunnel, dragging a barely conscious Leon. His arm hung limp, twisted at an unnatural angle.
Behind them, something moved within the fire—a shadow shifting, twisting, growing.
Then the flames bent inward.
Like a breath being taken.
A horrid screech tore through the air, followed by a wet, slithering sound.
Mia's stomach dropped. "It's not burning."
The smoke parted, revealing the Maw… changed.
The flames had seared its flesh, but instead of weakening it, the fire had fused into its body. Its exposed brain pulsed, the veins now glowing with embers.
Worst of all…
Its tongue had split.
Two barbed tendrils, twitching, each ending in gnashing, toothy maws.
Lucas cursed. "We're dead."
Evelyn's mind raced. The Maw wasn't just a monster—it was adapting.
If it survived fire, what else could it endure?
The Maw lunged.
Mia fired—bullets punched through its skull—but the creature shrugged it off like an inconvenience.
Lucas threw a makeshift explosive, a crude pipe bomb they'd salvaged earlier.
The blast rocked the tunnel, sending chunks of stone raining down.
For a moment, silence.
Then…
The rubble shifted.
"GO!" Evelyn screamed.
They ran, pushing deeper into the tunnel, the earth trembling beneath their feet.
The Maw was following.
Not running.
It crawled on the ceiling, its elongated limbs digging into the rock, its tongues lashing out blindly in search of flesh.
Lucas tossed another explosive, trying to collapse the path behind them.
It detonated, sending tons of debris crashing down.
But as the dust settled…
The Maw's claws punched through.
It was still coming.
Evelyn saw their only chance—a rusted maintenance door, barely visible through the grime.
She shoved it open. "Inside, now!"
They stumbled through, slamming the door just as the Maw reached it.
The steel buckled.
The creature's tongues pierced through the gaps, snapping inches from Mia's face.
Lucas and Evelyn grabbed a nearby pipe, wedging it against the door handle.
A moment of stillness.
Then—BOOM.
The ceiling caved in.
Tons of debris crushed the passage, sealing the Maw on the other side.
Darkness.
Silence.
Lucas collapsed against the wall, gasping. "Please… tell me that thing is finally dead."
Evelyn wasn't so sure.
Somewhere, deep within the rubble…
The laughter echoed once more.
