Chapter 822 - 822: Story 822: Hollow Hunger
The scent of burning flesh still lingered in the tunnel, a foul mixture of charred meat and rotting sinew. The Harvester's corpse twitched as it lay in a pool of bubbling ichor, its writhing muscle tendrils dissolving into the ground.
Leon wiped the sweat from his brow, keeping his rifle raised. Something was wrong.
"This is too easy," he muttered.
Evelyn staggered forward, her burned leg leaving a trail of blood. Mia helped her up, scanning the darkness ahead. They had won… but why did it feel like the fight had just begun?
Then, the tunnel rumbled.
Drip. Drip.
A thick, black fluid seeped through the ceiling, stretching like tendrils of living tar. The air grew heavy—thick, suffocating. Something was above them. Watching.
Leon's instincts screamed.
"MOVE!"
The ceiling collapsed.
A monstrous shape crashed down, sending debris flying. The light from Mia's flashlight caught its form—
A nightmare of pulsing flesh and jagged limbs.
It had no eyes, just a bulging mass of brain matter fused to a body of rotting sinew. Its gaping mouth unhinged like a serpent, revealing a serrated tongue dripping with corrosive bile.
The Devourer had sent something new.
Evelyn's breath hitched. "That's not just any mutation… it's a Hollow Eater."
Mia cursed. "A what?"
Evelyn gripped her shotgun tighter. "It doesn't just eat flesh. It devours everything."
The Hollow Eater lunged.
Leon barely dodged as its tongue lashed out, slicing through a rusted pipe like butter. Steam burst from the broken metal, filling the air with hissing fog.
Mia fired—a clean headshot. The bullet tore through its skull, splattering dark gore across the walls.
But the thing didn't die.
Instead, its body convulsed, and the wound sealed shut within seconds.
Leon felt dread coil in his gut. "It regenerates."
The Hollow Eater turned its sightless gaze to Mia and howled.
The walls around them shook as thick tendrils shot from its back, slamming into the tunnel. The organic mass spread like wildfire, warping the metal into something alive.
Leon grabbed Evelyn and ran, dodging as flesh-coated spikes erupted from the ground.
"We have to get out of here!" Mia yelled.
Leon looked around. No exits. The only way was through.
His mind raced. Think. Think.
Then, he spotted it—an old gas pipe.
"Cover me!" he shouted.
Mia and Evelyn unloaded everything they had, their bullets slowing the creature down. Leon sprinted, grabbing an old flare from his pack.
With one strike, the flare ignited.
He jammed it into the leaking gas valve—
BOOM.
The tunnel erupted in fire, the shockwave sending them flying.
The Hollow Eater shrieked, engulfed in roaring flames. Its regenerating flesh melted, the once-unstoppable beast collapsing into a charred husk.
Silence.
Leon coughed. They were alive.
But the Devourer wasn't done.
Not yet.
