Chapter 809 - 809: Story 809: The Crimson Nightmare
The fire raged, but the Devourer did not die.
Evelyn's breath hitched as she watched the monstrous figure stagger forward, its flesh blackened and peeling, but still very much alive. The thermite had done its damage—melting parts of its grotesque form—but something about it was… changing.
The Devourer adapted.
Its charred skin sloughed away in chunks, revealing something even more horrifying beneath. A thick, pulsating layer of muscle, glowing with a sickly crimson hue. Bone-like spikes jutted from its arms, razor-sharp and gleaming in the firelight. Its eyes, once black pits of endless hunger, now burned with an unnatural, golden fury.
Then it lunged.
Evelyn barely had time to react. She threw herself to the side as the creature's massive claws sliced through the air, carving deep gashes into the metal wall behind her. Sparks flew as she scrambled for cover, heart pounding.
"Damn it," she cursed under her breath. "This thing won't die!"
A guttural snarl echoed through the chamber, followed by a sound she didn't expect—laughter.
"Did you really think fire would be enough?" The voice was guttural, layered, almost mocking. The Devourer didn't just survive the flames. It had evolved because of them.
Evelyn clenched her teeth. Fear clawed at her mind, but she refused to let it consume her. She needed a plan. Fast.
Her eyes darted to the left—an emergency exit hatch leading to the surface. If she could just make it outside, she might have a chance.
She sprinted.
The monster roared in fury, dropping to all fours and charging after her with inhuman speed. Its claws tore into the ground, propelling it forward like a predator on the hunt.
Evelyn reached the hatch and slammed her fist into the emergency release. The mechanism groaned, ancient gears grinding against rusted metal. The door hissed open just as she felt the heat of the creature's breath on her neck.
With a desperate cry, she hurled herself through the opening, tumbling onto the dirt outside. She barely had time to roll before the beast exploded through the doorway behind her, its enormous form silhouetted against the moonlit sky.
But something was different.
The second the Devourer hit the open air, it hesitated. Its grotesque, mutated skin bubbled and hissed as if the very atmosphere burned it. Evelyn's eyes widened as realization struck.
The fire hadn't been enough. The thermite had slowed it down. But the real weapon?
The sun.
The monster howled in agony as its flesh blistered under the faintest touch of daylight. It stumbled back, clawing at its own melting form, enraged but helpless.
Evelyn didn't waste the opportunity. She grabbed her radio, gasping into it.
"Leon—bring the UV lamps!"
If fire couldn't kill the Devourer, then maybe pure, unfiltered light would.
