Chapter 807 - 807: Story 807: The Abyss Stares Back
Evelyn's breath hitched as she locked eyes with the creature standing before her. It wasn't just another mutation—it was something far worse.
The monster was massive, its muscular frame rippling under a slick, blackened hide. Its sharp, jagged claws flexed, eager to rip into flesh. A grotesque tongue slithered from its gaping maw, tasting the air as if savoring the scent of fear. But the most horrifying thing?
It was watching her. Studying her.
A predator.
Evelyn took a slow step back, her fingers tightening around the broken metal pipe in her hand. She knew this wasn't a fight she could win. If this thing was anything like the others, it had evolved beyond simple undead hunger. It had purpose.
And she was its prey.
The creature let out a guttural growl that rumbled through the underground bunker like a distant thunderstorm. Its glowing white eyes burned into her, sending a primal shiver down her spine.
Then—
It moved.
A blur of darkness, and suddenly it was upon her.
Evelyn barely had time to react. She dove to the side as the beast's claws slashed through the air, tearing into the concrete wall behind her like paper. A deafening crash echoed through the bunker as debris rained down.
She hit the ground hard, pain jolting through her body. Scrambling to her feet, she swung her makeshift weapon wildly, but the monster was already on the move again.
It was fast.
Too fast.
With terrifying precision, it grabbed her wrist mid-swing, its grip like a vice. Evelyn gasped as she felt bones strain under the pressure.
Then it pulled her closer, forcing her to stare into its abyssal maw.
A deep, rumbling voice—distorted and inhuman—slithered from its throat.
"You are not like the others."
Evelyn's blood ran cold. It spoke.
This wasn't just another mindless horror. It was something intelligent. Something aware.
Panic surged through her veins, but she fought it down. If it could speak, maybe it could reason.
"Who—what are you?" she gasped, struggling against its grip.
The creature's tongue flicked out, brushing against her cheek like a serpent's kiss.
"We... are hunger."
Then it threw her.
Evelyn's body crashed against a rusted metal crate, the impact knocking the wind out of her. She coughed violently, her vision blurring. Through the pain, she saw the monster advancing again—slow, deliberate, savoring the moment.
She wasn't going to survive this.
Not unless she changed the rules.
Gritting her teeth, Evelyn reached into her vest and yanked out a flare. With trembling fingers, she struck it against the ground.
A burst of blinding red light filled the bunker.
The creature recoiled, snarling. Its body twisted unnaturally, retreating from the flame's glow.
It hated the light.
Evelyn's eyes widened.
She had just found its weakness.
