Chapter 405
Seeing that Layla Lowell was almost asleep, she sped up the car.
The late-night lanes were much quieter and smoother than during the day.
The car stopped at Southvale’s Riverside entrance, with the two cars she left behind still separated by some distance.
She patted Layla Lowell’s shoulder to wake her up, and then carried her luggage inside first.
After opening the door and putting the luggage in, it took her less than two minutes. When she went out to carry Layla in, she found that she was not needed.
Charles Carrington came in with Layla in his arms, his steps light and relaxed.
"Is the room on the first floor?" Charles asked her.
Chloe Collins glanced at the girl in his arms who didn’t dare to move and nodded slowly.
She pointed in one direction: "Second room on the left."
Charles carried her in right away.
Alexander Foster followed inside, standing in the doorway, making the two-meter-high door seem a bit small.
He asked, "Is your hair dry?"
Chloe pretended to touch her hair: "Almost. Do you want a glass of water?"
Out of courtesy, she asked.
Alex: "I’ll pour it. You go take a hot shower."
Chloe stopped him: "Aren’t you tired? It’s late."
Subtext: Why haven’t you left yet?
Alex was silent.
Slowly, he came to his senses.
Actually, he had been paying attention to his words and deeds towards her during this time. Whenever he detected any excessive behavior, he stopped himself immediately, so as not to make her feel uncomfortable.
Worried, he was indeed a bit domineering tonight and hadn’t paid much attention to her feelings.
"I’ll leave when Charles is done," he said.
Chloe nodded: "Feel free, just help me close the door when you leave. I’ll go upstairs and take a shower."
She continued showering, feeling a bit sticky after the fight in the middle of her bath.
Alex smirked. Wasn’t that what he just told her?
He went to the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water, making himself comfortable.
In the room.
A faint smell of medicine hung in the air.
As soon as Charles put Layla down, he noticed that the gauze on her left foot was loose, so he helped her fix it.
Layla covered her foot: "Mr. Carrington, I can do it myself. You should go back and rest."
Mr. Carrington stared at her for a few moments, then suddenly smiled: "Don’t worry, I will."
Layla’s expression stiffened again: "I didn’t mean that..."
Before she could finish the word "mean", Charles had already squatted down to help her rewrap the gauze.
He held her foot in one hand and wrapped the gauze with the other.
Watching his deliberate and gentle movements, Layla felt a flood of emotions.
Ever since she was a child, not even her father had ever done this for her.
Whenever she was injured, they went to the hospital to get it taken care of, or, if it was a minor injury, they just left it alone.
Now an unfamiliar man of the opposite sex was caring for her like this, it made her feel uneasy.
She sat still like a wooden doll, not daring to move.
"Does it hurt?" he suddenly asked.
Feeling startled, Layla shook her head, "Not at all."
Charles looked at her and said, "If it hurts, you need to say it. Don’t be polite with me. And don’t forget, I owe you a life."
Layla opened her eyes wide and quickly waved her hands: "No, that’s not true. In fact, you would have been in danger because of me, so protecting you is my duty. There’s no such thing as you owing me a life."
Charles raised his eyebrow: "Protect me?"
"I don’t need a woman to protect me."
Layla subconsciously retorted as she held the bedsheet: "But I’ve already protected you."
Charles choked, then chuckled quietly.
Layla didn’t know what he was laughing at; all she knew was that his smile made her feel healed.
