Chapter 335
Lilian Pearce and her mother shared the same attitude.
Chloe Collins’s calm face had a trace of cracks apearing on it.
When Chloe was six years old and sent to the mountain, every time her mother visited her, she would ask why her father didn’t visit, and why she couldn’t return home.
Just like that, she asked three times before she had to admit that she was abandoned by her father.
After that, she didn’t ask anymore.
Instead, she asked her mother what had happened between her and that man.
Her mother lied to her, just like Lilian does now.
Things like washing away her bad fortune and strengthening her body, even at a young age, she knew were just lies intended to appease her.
If they wouldn’t tell her, she would find out the truth on her own.
So at the age of eight, she took the opportunity to yank out her father Tristan Collins’s hair to conduct a paternity test. The results proved that they were indeed father and daughter!
She couldn’t accept this result no matter what and couldn’t understand why she was abandoned. So she continued to question her mother, who still didn’t reveal anything, until her death without uttering a word about it.
At this point, her heart has long turned cold.
After a few seconds of silence, she looked straight at Lilian Pearce and directly voiced her suspicion: "Ms. Pearce, did my mother do something that hurt him?"
Seeing the surprise in Lilian Pearce’s eyes, she became sure of her guess and said, "I know my mother. If she was innocent, even if she was bedridden and couldn’t get up, she would send her own sister and her husband to hell for their illicit affair."
She smiled a sorrowful smile: "But she didn’t do that. She not only didn’t do that, but she also asked me not to cause trouble for him. Don’t you think that’s strange?"
Lilian Pearce fell into silence.
She couldn’t lie under Chloe’s gaze.
Such a look made her feel suffocated.
But in her heart, there was a voice telling her that she couldn’t reveal the truth.
She lowered her eyes and said nothing, suddenly stood up and knelt down before Chloe.
Chloe was startled and quickly helped her up, "Doing this won’t stop me from investigating the matter."
Lilian Pearce beseeched, "Chlo-Chlo, I’m begging you, can you please stop asking? Don’t look into this matter anymore. Knowing the truth won’t do you any good, really. Your mother and I were only trying to protect you."
"Please get up first." Chloe resigned.
Lilian Pearce knew that her words were effective, so instead of getting up, she bent over and prepared to kowtow.
"If you don’t agree to my request, I won’t get up."
Chloe had never been one to easily give in.
Seeing her not speaking, Lilian Pearce thought she had agreed, and lifted her head. Suddenly, her eyes narrowed.
She immediately grabbed the dagger Chloe was about to slash at her wrist, "Chlo-Chlo, don’t make things difficult for me!"
Chloe held the dagger firmly without loosening her grip, "Just tell me the truth."
Lilian Pearce’s face flashed in pain. Suddenly, she gripped Chloe’s dagger and forcibly yanked it out.
Blood spurted out!
Chloe released the dagger as fast as possible to reduce the pulling force, but it was already too late.
Seeing Lilian Pearce’s bloodied palm, Chloe knew she had lost.
Lilian Pearce’s determination to keep the truth hidden away was too strong.
"I’ll dress the wound for you."
Lilian Pearce sighed heavily, "I would never hurt you. Sometimes, not knowing something is better than knowing it. Because even if you knew the truth, you wouldn’t be able to do anything, or change anything. You’d only increase your suffering."
Chloe’s heart was moved, and her eyes slowly closed.
"Let’s take care of the wound first."
Only when she saw Chloe’s attitude soften did Lilian Pearce slowly stand up.
"I’ll call the waiter." Chloe said.
