Chapter 1639
Chloe’s voice came slowly, "Weren’t you supposed to watch me finish eating?"
Maurice Willis stiffened: ’Right, then I’ll wait a bit before leaving."
Inwardly, he praised himself for figuring it out, realizing that Madam knew everything that was going on in her heart.
He had thought that she was just throwing a tantrum and deliberately making a scene with Alexander Foster.
It turned out he was overthinking it.
After she reached the bottom of the bowl of porridge, Maurice Willis took the empty bowl out to report.
It was very quiet outside; Alexander Foster sat alone by the dining table, neither eating nor moving, quietly looking out the window, pondering certain things.
Maurice Willis hurriedly went over with the bowl to report: "boss, Madam has finished eating."
Seeing the barely touched food, he had a brainwave and said, "Madam told me to watch you finish this plate of food."
Alex didn’t even need to think and said, "Don’t bother making things up, you can clock out."
Maurice Willis was left at a loss for words and could only put down the tray, bow slightly, and then silently left the room.
Both inside and outside the room, it was very quiet.
Chloe glanced at her phone and saw that James Cunningham said he would come over around eight or nine tomorrow morning to discuss finding Timmy Collins.
She picked up her phone to reply with a single word and then set it back down—nothing else to do.
Her hands and her heart felt empty.
After thinking for a bit, her gaze suddenly focused on a stack of cards at the upper right corner of the table.
Within ten minutes, she was engrossed in writing and drawing on the cards, occasionally frowning in thought and at times lifting the corners of her mouth in a small smile as she put pen to paper.
A light and cheerful song played from the computer, and its airy melody gradually relaxed her mood.
Just then, the door opened.
She glanced over with the corner of her eye and saw Alex, carrying a suitcase, come in, and without even a glance in her direction, he headed straight for the wardrobe.
He focused on putting his clothes in the wardrobe, taking care to wipe the inside with a tissue.
She redirected her gaze and continued to write.
By the time she had finished with the cards and looked back, she saw a set of pajamas laid out on the bed, everything prepared, just waiting for her to pick them up.
And him, still like a silent film actor, turned his back on her as he hung up clothes.
Clutching the stack of cards, she didn’t go take a bath but merely placed her pajamas to the side and lay down on the bed, pulling the blanket up slowly.
At that moment, the man finally turned to look at her.
His lips moved, and words were on the brink of being spoken.
She could almost imagine what he was about to say.
She blinked once and waited two seconds.
He didn’t speak.
As she lay down, her head almost touching the pillow, she suddenly felt his hand.
With a firm grip, he helped her sit up, his expression displeased, his brows furrowed.
Chloe handed him a card.
The man looked down and saw a cute cartoon figure drawn on it, very familiar—it was one of the children from their mobile screensavers.
It was a girl.
The girl looked up at him, saying, "I don’t feel like taking a bath tonight."
The little character had big eyes, brimming with tears, pitiful yet adorable, just like cuddling up in his arms and acting spoiled, an exact likeness.
In that second, his expression softened.
Suddenly, Chloe handed him another card.
This time, it was still that cute little girl, puckering up to blow him a kiss, her lips forming a tender pout.
Next to it, there was a phrase: "Whether I walk, sit, or lie down, my thoughts are with you; in my dreams, I see you too."
His eyebrows drew together more tightly, appearing even more upset, but the next moment, he suddenly turned his back on her.
In an angle she couldn’t see, his lips slowly curled into a faint smile, his tense brows relaxed and the smile carried a mix of indulgence and resignation.
