Chapter 1602
He turned around, quietly staring at her, not saying a word.
Soon, Miranda Jones was unnerved by that look.
She averted her gaze, saying, "I..."
"We are going to get married soon, so I have the final say in the matters of this house, understand?" his brows furrowed.
The words that Miranda had not yet uttered were swallowed back because of what he said.
She looked at Charles Carrington in astonishment, suddenly unable to speak.
The man stepped closer and said, "Whether it’s with affection or without it, I can tell, you’re overdoing it."
She shuddered violently, her complexion turning slightly pale.
Indeed, deep down she harbored an obsessive feeling for this man, which made her unable to stop thinking about him from high school up until now!
She thought she had hidden it well!
Who would have thought that he would see right through her at this moment!
A profound sense of defeat surged in her heart, prickling her emotions.
"Marrying? Are you sure you can marry her?" she scoffed coldly.
"Or rather, are you sure you really want to marry her? Not just for the child?"
Seeing that the man did not continue walking towards her, she knew her words had struck a chord, so she walked up to him and blocked his path firmly.
"Charles, look at me, then look at yourself. Have you forgotten what you told me back then?"
Charles Carrington was cold, his eyes even frosted over.
She continued, "You told me that you didn’t want to be with me not because I wasn’t good enough, but because you didn’t want to be trapped by any kind of feelings. You said you’d never marry or fall deeply in love with any woman, that you wanted to live for yourself. Have you really forgotten all that?"
The frost on the man’s face deepened, yet he remained silent.
Unable to restrain herself, she clutched at his clothes, pleading in almost a begging tone, "I’m the one who understands you the best. I can love everything associated with you, accept your daughter, and even accept your choice not to marry, as long as you don’t marry another woman. As long as you go back to being the old you, I’m willing to do anything!"
Charles Carrington pushed her away irritably, his handsome face darkening, "I indeed said such things before, but now, I take them back!"
Miranda was struck, unwilling and afraid to believe that this man had changed!
The man who always emphasized freedom was now willingly walking into marriage!
He was the person who would not even take over the family fortune for the sake of freedom!
"No way!" Driven by numerous resentments, she ran up and embraced him, "You can’t go! You can’t go to her, what’s so good about her? She’s just a little girl, immature, only knows how to make you angry, to argue with you. What else can she do besides having given you a child? I can have children too!"
Charles Carrington turned around and pushed her hands away from his arms.
But she refused to give up, and her grip tightened even more when she caught sight of the woman emerging from the elevator.
"If you had wanted to back then, our child would have already grown up, so why would you need her to bear one for you? Marrying her for the child, doesn’t that feel like a compromise to you?"
Just this one sentence made Layla Lowell turn around and walk away.
And Miranda’s strength was exhausted the moment Layla Lowell entered the elevator, as Charles Carrington forcefully pushed her away.
"Miranda!" he bellowed.
"I’ve told you clearly, I don’t like you, not before, not now. My marrying her is not for the sake of the child, don’t spout nonsense!"
Miranda: "Fine, let’s say I’m spouting nonsense, then just answer me directly, do you love her?"
