Chapter 1564
The man in front of her was handsome, but he didn’t quite fit her previous impression of him.
"Maybe you should change," she suggested.
Charles Carrington turned to her, confused. "Hmm? Why? Don’t you like these clothes?"
"I do but... I don’t think it suits you."
Charles smoothed out his collar, looking at himself in the mirror. "Who says it doesn’t suit me? I always dress like this. Changing my style could only be for the better. This is the one."
Layla Lowell pouted, sensing there was more to his words.
"Miss, this set of clothes is designed for couples. Would you like to try it on too?" the store attendant asked.
"Couples?"
Charles Carrington smiled, "So you want us to wear matching outfits."
"Absolutely not! Besides, isn’t it rather tacky for couples to dress alike? Why should being a couple mean we have to wear the same clothes?"
She didn’t mince her words.
He laughed, "Alright, then let’s be a less ordinary couple."
Layla felt flustered. Had she just been tricked?
After purchasing the clothes, he took her to eat, shop, and do many things ordinary couples would do.
Gradually, she got lost in the moment, forgetting her initial reluctance.
Fortuitously, they participated in a mall activity and won a pair of couple’s bracelets, sponsored by a jewelry store, after bagging the first place.
At that moment, she felt genuinely happy.
They didn’t return until dusk, carrying lots of snacks and toys for their daughter.
Charles intended to follow her into the house, but she halted him at the doorway.
"That’s enough for today." She quickly shut the door.
From outside, his chuckle could be heard, "Alright, rest well. I’ll pick you up for work tomorrow."
Layla held her pounding heart, that familiar rapid heartbeat had returned.
She placed everything on the table, ready to call the nanny to bring her daughter home.
But when she unlocked her phone, she saw a message from an unfamiliar number.
[Miss Lowell, It was quite a coincidence running into you at the mall. I’m sure you remember me, I’m Miranda Jones.]
Miranda Jones...
A chill ran down her spine.
This woman was Charles’s ex-girlfriend. She had once claimed that she was pregnant with Charles’s child but was forced to abort it by him.
This incident had made it incredibly hard for Layla to accept Charles.
How could she forget it after just an afternoon coated with honey?
Her grip loosened, and the gifts fell to the floor. She no longer had the heart to open them.
At the same time, in a car parked downstairs.
Miranda Jones sat in the car, clutching her phone. She had just sent Layla a message and was waiting for a response, but none came.
She let out a cold laugh, eyes shifting between the two apartments above.
The upper one belonged to Layla Lowell, and the one just below it was Charles Carrington’s.
The man she had been pining for without ever truly being in a relationship with him.
Though she fiercely remembered him every day and disregarded all other men because of him.
Sadly, there was now another woman by his side, a young girl who was six years his junior.
Unwilling to let go, Miranda had thus fabricated a lie to deceive that young lady.
As expected, women being jealous creatures, the lie had worked.
Even though they had a child, they hadn’t married.
A slow smile spread across her face, "I have more tricks up my sleeve. You are no match for me, young lady."
Just as she finished speaking, her phone began to ring.
"Hello, may I speak to Miss Miranda Jones?"
"Speaking."
"Hello, I’m the principal of Glorious Kindergarten. I’m glad to inform you that you passed your interview, and you may begin work tomorrow."
"Thank you, principal. I’ll be there on time."
After hanging up, Miranda’s ruby lips curled up into a deep smile.
